What is your favourite Puppy distro?
I have used a lot of live puppys for many years, but Debian-based dpup_484beta4 and dpup_485 were favourites for a long time, until Debian cancelled support for 'Lenny', but forgot to move it into their archive repo for a long time. I still use them, though.
My recent favourite is the mighty LupuPlus 5.2.8.005-1. It is definitely the most versatile puppy I know of, it runs on all my old PCs, and it is very complete out of the box, yet easy to upgrade if necessary.

True freedom is a live Puppy on a multisession CD/DVD.

Since this thread is still running, I'm currently using 5.28.005 and 5.25 Retro (on a really old machine).
I thought that 4.31 was pretty darn solid, but it seemed to exhibit a higher hardware load than 4.11/12 that I had previously run (the Retro of this worked well on the old machine that is currently running 5.25 Retro).
I have considered rolling all of my machines back to 5.25 Retro, simply because it shows a lower memory load than 5.28 (and I think that 5.28 shows a lower memory load than 4.31 did).
I do need to get ttuuxxx's 2.14 and try it on my old dog of a machine...

Glad to hear that someone else is still running Lucid Retro....... I run it daily on my older hardware. Seems to have much lower resource usage (your results may vary) than the newer releases.
For the curious.....

I had misplaced my link to the Retro 5.25!
My observation is that if you don't allow Puppy to load the .sfs to RAM, that Lupu burns about 150MB, and Retro burns about 65MB. (on old memory limited machines, loading to RAM doesn't help them run faster...)
That 65MB is lower than 4.31, 4.21 and I think lower than 4.11/12 Retro was for memory load.
Edit: I should try some performance tests of these versus Win98 (which was the installed system on my old laptop). I would like to see Puppy function as well at Win98 on these old machines (Win98 works OK on a machine with 128MB RAM, and pretty well on a machine with 256MB RAM)

(Assuming you're referring to the 333, right?)
So you might want to try this as an alternate browser.
(And don't forget this.)
Note: I haven't tried it with 2.14x, but it runs fine as-is with 3.01, which has much-older libs...

The old 333 machine is mostly just a test bed -- I have enough more powerful machines, that I don't do very much with it...

Puppy 301 with Seamonkey 2.20
Puppy Linux 301 is becomming a favourite nice and light and with newer jwm runs well on my box. Puppy Linux 4.12 is also a favourite of mine.
Also like the earlier Dpups and Lucid 525 retro. By the way Dewby that Slimboat Pet is rather nice.
Firehydrant is now my favourite Puppy - very nice.

What is your favourite Puppy distro?
Wary Puppy 5.3 is my favourite --especially for my 1999 Pentium lll. It has a lot of important fixes, updates, add-ons, and customizations that continue to make it a relevant version for those who are wanting good value from an old system that otherwise might end up in the recycle depot, (or worse) the landfill.
I continue to see new users coming to the Community asking for help with Wary 5.3 and I predict it is destined to become a classic Puppy.
Just saying...

you can find older debian at http://archive.debian.org/ even if .net is not update. I assume they did that to try and force users to update like microsoft do. I assume they will do it again so thats the place to look. Ah lenny...before the bloat crept in.....
My favourite puppy is the one you build yourself

I think the 528 is th most bug free . The seamonkey has the widest abilty to down load . I like The dill speed but it is frustrating to use . there are a lot of do's and don'ts . I thinkt that a browser should do most normal actions of a regular browser . one shouldn't need to reinvent the wheel everytime; to use a browser .
My one regret is my inability to use the multimedia on old testing cd's . I can either run the video or run the cd aplication quiz w/o sound or only visually . Xine doesnt function properly nor the mplayer .
Everytime I download the flash player I get the same puzzling "no plug-in " notice .
I am sure this is because I haven't been using them properly .

Have you tried just dropping your media onto the "play" icon, on the desktop? It launches gnome-mplayer as the default. I find it plays virtually everything... Many (most?) file formats should automagically launch, if you click on them.
Once you know that it works, you can set it as the default program for those extensions that don't auto-launch, right click on the file, and select "set run action" -- then drag the default player icon into the box offered.
You probably need to follow this:Everytime I download the flash player I get the same puzzling "no plug-in " notice .
I am sure this is because I haven't been using them properly .
http://puppylinux.org/wikka/libflashplayer?redirect=no
Basically, you're going to get the flash library, and manually place it in the appropriate folder. Once this is done, you don't need the folder it creates (perhaps do the untar operation in /tmp/, so it will self clean when you shutdown)
When looking for fixes and such for Puppy, I do a Google search for (for example):
Code: Select all
puppy linux flash wikka

Re: What is your favourite Puppy distro?
4xx was the first I tried, all were brilliant, then I tried 5xx Slacko all have fully supported my hardware and have made some cranky old machines seem like something decent, have been trying 5.5 Slacko on some older desktops and it's as robust as any OS I've ever tried.rmcellig wrote:What is your favourite Puppy distro and why did you choose that distro?
My fav distro is Puppy Linux 5.2.8 (so far). I find it easy to get going with this distro.
Slacko 5.6
Slacko 5.6 has my current vote. I purchased some new hardware and couldn't get ANY operating system to work properly. After about a dozen attempts at different OS installations I popped a Slacko 5.6 PAE CD in the drive. It is as though it was made for this hardware config. It installed in about 10 minutes and runs oh so sweetly (thanx 01micko)
Currently I have a customized version of Puppy 421 and Puppy 431 (on two different older computers). Sweet.
I also was trying out the old Puppy 301 again. Surprized at how well it worked,...but settled on the two above.
I also have Racy 5.2.2 installed as well (but think I really prefer the 4xx series the best. Lovely Puppies.
@Ted Dog--
is the 412 version of Quirky --Quirky 1.4???
If so,...I really do like that Puppy also. (So many terrific older puppies to choose from).
