Have you tried opening your old cards under Abiword? (the built in word processor)

In some Operating Systems(Puppy Linux) INKSCAPE-LITE is built-in.

There are heaps of free programs 'out there', google 'free linux invitation card templates', and you'll get some 5.7 million hits... Very Happy

Also, I haven't used openoffice for some time, but I think there is a card template in there somewhere, maybe as an add-on.
