Hi Icake

Pls STOP it is nonsense if you don't publish and extend an index! This topic is not usuable for normal user!!! Pls go to the Puppy Wiki and enter your stuff in it and create the links and the index needing to work with it without toil  ,,,

This forum is not a collection of knowledge (that is the job from a wiki) but a place to discuss...

Kind regards

Adding Chinese to Puppy: Difficult to Follow Instructions

#414 Post by TorontoBoy »

I am an experience Ubuntu 16.04 user, trying Puppy on an old Dell.

Finding the right Puppy version was easy: I downloaded the iso for Puppy Precise 5.7.1 x486, burned to DVD. It runs well on the old Dell desktop.

Now for Chinese. This post is easy to find, which is good.

The problems I have are:
-It looks like files are stored on Google Drive. Puppy comes with Opera and Google drive will not allow Opera to see the files. It says I need to use another browser. Ok, so using Puppy Package Manager I downloaded Firefox, only Google Drive still will not allow me to see the files. It says I need to upgrade Firefox. I therefore am blind
-I think I found the right files in a post authored by icake on Tue 21 Feb 2017, pp28, but where do I download the actual file? I think I need:
* fcitx_4.2.0-en-zh-precise-12.0.0.pet
* scim_1.4.9-en-zh-precise-12.0.0.pet

Neither of these files are found on the PPM, in any repository. I am stuck.

-It looks like I need another computer to download Chinese packages, then transfer them to my Puppy computer, in order to install the packages?

Today I downloaded Puppy Linux Precise 5.7.1 onto a 10 year old Dell P4 celeron 2.66mhz with 750mb ram, and wish to explain, in simple terms, how to install Chinese input. You will need another computer that has Chinese and a USB drive. I installed the SCIM version and not the FCITX version. I installed the half Chinese version (only Chinese input and display), and not the full version (Chinese OS).

This is the file you need:
scim Chinese input platform:
scim_1.4.9-en-zh-precise-12.0.0.pet (21.6 mb)
icake has stored it on Baidu. You will need a Chinese computer (not your newly installed Puppy) to browse and then download the .pet (extra install module) to the USB drive. Don't bother with the Google docs, as the file is not there.

TorontoBoy,

Thanks for raising the issue:
Don't bother with the Google docs, as the file is not there.

I checked my download link to the Google drive for the Universal Half-Chinese Pets

Looking for Chinese input for Puppy Tahr 6.0.5 SCIM

#421 Post by TorontoBoy »

I have installed the standard Puppy Tahr 6.0.5 on an old desktop and am looking for half Simplified Chinese PETS. I just want Chinese display and input. From pp 27 I believe the files I am after are:
scim_1.4.14-en-zh-raring-13.0.2.pet, or pp 24

scim_1.4.9-en-zh-precise-12.0.8.pet (found on Universal Half-Chinese Pets http://pan.baidu.com/s/1pJjrVGR)

Is this correct?

I cannot find these files on Google Drive at https://goo.gl/DgVp8y, nor on Baidu at http://pan.baidu.com/s/1sjlpIRN

On Google Drive nor pan.baidu I see no scim files at all.

Could someone please tell me where to find these files, and if these files are the ones that should be used with my Puppy version? Can I use the hang Chinese Precise pet version on Tahr?

Interestingly I went on baidu.cn and searched for scim_1.4.14-en-zh-raring-13.0.2.pet and found on http://www.down20.com/f-524628425444720 the file scim_1.4.14-en-zh-raring-13.0.2.pet, which I downloaded. I will try it.

Thank you

Chinese Language pets

#422 Post by icake »

I have installed the standard Puppy Tahr 6.0.5 on an old desktop and am looking for half Simplified Chinese PETS
Tahr 6.0.5 requires scim_1.4.14-en-zh-raring-13.0.1.pet or higher and so scim_1.4.14-en-zh-raring-13.0.2 is ok.

the required Half Chinese pets can be downloaded here:
Google drive https://goo.gl/kdfkFG or
Baidu drive http://pan.baidu.com/s/1pJjrVGR

Your original search at:
Google Drive at https://goo.gl/DgVp8y and Baidu at http://pan.baidu.com/s/1sjlpIRN
contains all the full Simplified Chinese pets (not the half-Chinese pets you want)

When you go into these Chinese pet folders, you will see a number of sub-folders, the scim_1.4.14-en-zh-raring-13.0.1.pet and 13.0.2.pet are stored under the "scim32bit" folder
These pets were reorganized recently. Instead of storing all 100+ pets under one folder, a new layer of sub-folder was added and the 100+ pets are now stored inside these sub-folders by alphabetical names. The new arrangement reduces the number of pets inside each sub-folder and will ease the searching process.
Can I use the hang Chinese Precise pet version on Tahr?
I do not think so.

Thanks for the clarification, iCake.

I I had installed SCIM Chinese successfully for Slacko Puppy 5.7.1, but when I tried to install SCIM to Tahrpup 6.0.5 using scim_1.4.14-en-zh-raring-13.0.2.pet, it only partially worked. I could ctrl-space to get Chinese input, but could not configure the input options. I decided to remove SCIM by reinstalling Tahrpup.

fcitx_4.2.7-en-zh-raring-13.0.2.pet installed without difficulty and works very well.

Thanks for all your hard work in maintaining these pets. Puppy is still the fastest OS for my aging 15 yo p3 800, 500mb ram system, which now speaks Chinese!
