I had installed Seamonkey and when on a web site, the mouse became unresponsive as well as the keyboard on occasion like I was experiencing a temporary lockup.
I do not know if it was my web connection or an internal PC problem or a Puppy or Seamonkey problem also.
I got that same extended hesitation when using Opera also.
So who knows?
And BTW, I had comp-fusion installed and working at the time.

I was having trouble with long delays opening mounts (2 partitions on 2 different drives)

I had been using chrome22 from the 5.3.3 build but had small annoying problems with chrome not writing correctly or the window scroll bar losing colour or disappearing altogether and layout problems when writing in forums

no one big thing but lots of niggles, so I have ditched chrome and am using the built in firefox

since doing that no drive mounting hangs

I did try the chromium build from ppm but got a 'cannot run as root' error

slacko is definitely my favourite puppy build and thanks again to BK, micko and other contributors

cheers

LibreOffice-Continuation of problems

#36 Post by tlchost »

get_libreoffice-0.18-3 creates a script, pinstall.sh, that changes the run action associated with the write, calc, paint and draw desktop icons to use LiobreOffice instead of the deafult values. The script works with slacko5337, but not with 5.4

This occurs with a USB installed Slacko 5.4

The following menu options do not work with either 5.4 or 5.337 installed as a bootable USB

document > compose > new document
business > sheets > new database
business > sheets > new spread sheet

Testing Slacko54, manual frugal install.

I like the speed this puppy runs on this old p4 box.

I tried installing the factory nvidia 96.43.23 and that is a no go.
on this kit.

The default nouveau with mesa works good.

I couldn't get a connection to my sms server using YASSM, but downloaded shinobar's pnethood,, and now am connected to my network.

I like this puppy,, I think I'll play with this one for a while.

Thanks all for keeping the puppy alive!

Peace

Slacko-5.4 feedback and bug reports

I did a remaster of the slacko-54 pae install that I did on the usb
hard drive, then did a frugal install of the iso that was created (1.4 gb)
to an 8gb flash drive.
Report Video 1.4 - Tue 4 Dec 2012 on Slacko Puppy 5.4 - Linux 3.4.17-PAE i686

X.Org version: 1.12.3
dimensions: 1280x1024 pixels (338x270 millimeters)
depth of root window: 24 planes
All the applications that I added including libre office work fine but
the hardinfo report shows:
OpenGL

Renderer Unknown
Version Unknown
Direct Rendering No
If I run the video upgrade wizard it shows nvidia although I didn't
use the customize option in the remaster script.
Apart from no direct rendering it's working great.

Slacko-5.4 feedback and bug reports (slacko-opera-4g)

#39 Post by ETP »

01micko,

Having installed a number of pets I noted that one was missing a JWM menu entry so dropped to the prompt to run "fixmenus" with following result.

Code: Select all

error: could not open display.
A further try with a new savefile and no pets installed gave the same error.

Hi ETP

Someone else reported similar.

As a work around do this:

Code: Select all

# mkdir -p /usr/share/applications/kde4
# fixmenus
Generating /root/.icewm/menu...
Generating /root/.jwmrc...
# jwm -reload
There is a work around built in if you download kde stuffs which reverts to the old menu system. I think these problems occurred because Barry did a big revamp of the xdg menu system.

I really don't like the old system as it is very slow, but I suppose if it's less buggy then I might drop jwm_menu_create at some point down the track.

Maybe Barry can rewrite it in BaCon? Did the trick for DEB based pups.

I am running Slacko 5.4 with Firefox and went to use the PDF printer that is part of CUPS. It crashed without producing a PDF file.
And I did not see any Puppy PDF printer offering to install.
So am I missing something?
There are lots of times when I want to be able to save a document to a PDF file so I can print it later.
Also, that hesitation in the browser I was talking about earlier just reappeared as keyboard response just stopped while typing this post and after a short wait, reappeared.
If I keep typing, the text in the keyboard buffer does appear.
But the display is not keeping up with the input.
This is also happening when playing videos from the web or locally too.

Slacko-5.4 feedback and bug reports

#44 Post by Billtoo »

I took another stab at remastering my usbhd install of slacko-54 pae.
This time I didn't put any extra sfs files in the puppylivecdbuild
directory,in the first remaster I put the devx, kernel source, and libre
office sfs files in there.
The custom-puppy.iso is 1157mb in size where the first one was
1488mb,the devx, kernel source and libre office are included in the
newest iso so it wasn't necessary to put them in the puppylivecdbuild
directory since they were already loaded.
I did a manual frugal install of the new iso to an 8gb flash drive and
installed grub4dos.
I plugged the flashdrive into another pc with nvidia graphics.
I used the advanced grub4dos directory on first boot and booted
pfix=ram,it booted to the prompt, I ran xorgwizard and chose the
nvidia driver.
Then did the usual setup and rebooted creating my savefile.

It runs well on my pc with intel graphics too but no direct rendering.

LANDisk Samba shares

#45 Post by mawebb88 »

Hi

I thought I would try the latest Slacko. But one essential requirement is that I must be able to connect to my LANDisk. Until today I had both Puppy 4.3.1 and Slacko-5.3.1 as frugal installations on my Acer laptop HD. But I have just upgraded the Windows on the same HD to Windows 8(sad isn't it!) and from what I have read Grub4DOS won't work so I decide to move the frugal files to a USB stick with Grub as the boot-loader. All this went fine. But then I decided to upgrade to a fugal Slacko 5.4 and also frugal install Precise Puppy 5.4.1. Unfortunately I have had to roll both back to my prior working installations as they both have the same problem. For starters YASSM finds my LANDossk shares but does not connect. So I installed on Slacko-5.4 Pnethood 0.65 but I think its missing the

Code: Select all

/proc/fs/cifs/LinuxExtensionsEnabled
bit I told Barry K ages about. If I execute this before running pNethood (like I used to do before BK added to his version of pNethood in 4.3.1 and which works just fine) and then "show" a share I get a massive crash with a screen full of CIF errors and a halt only recoverable by a power switch turn off. The same thing happens on Precise Puppy 5.4.1 which seems to already have the

Code: Select all

/proc/fs/cifs/LinuxExtensionsEnabled
built-in.

No idea what the problem is so any suggestions greatly appreciated otherwise I am stuck with the legacy versions

Slacko-5.4 feedback and bug reports

#47 Post by Billtoo »

I used my slacko-54 pae remaster iso and did a manual frugal install
to a 32gb flash drive, running on acer laptop.

19695 frames in 5.0 seconds = 3938.939 FPS

With the devx and kernel source sfs files already in the remaster it
was easy to download and compile the
amd-driver-installer-catalyst-12.10-x86.x86_64.run file.

It's working well on this laptop.

Bug report...

When I tried to install my pet package Advanced Bash Scripting Guide v6.6
I noticed that the desktop entries wouldn't show in the Start menu.

The most likely reason is because the package has two desktop files inside.

The fix was to type 'fixmenus' after the installation of the pet package.

Note that Barry Kauler made some change to his Precise distro
a couple of months ago that solved the problem.

Just as an experiment I booted up with kernel option
"i915.modeset=0" on my IBM desktop with intel graphics.

The firstrun application has a confusing message. I took
a screenshot.
