pemasu & rerwin:
Unexpected release by BK of 5.4.3 has introduced some additional considerations about the (still) non-functioning rt2800usb. Flying blind, this is what I have done/am doing:
I deleted the previous (retro)Precise and loaded a FULL of 5.4.3 . This was not uneventful; FULL may broken or something residing on my machine that wasn't fully deleted may be broken. FULL doesn't start up properly, loadsa messages, prompt instead of opening screen, but, by various subterfuges, I can get it up & running. I will work on the install aspect as far as I am able and report again, here, about this.
In the meantime, I attempted to connect with the rt2800usb dongle using both SNS & Dougal's utilities. At this stage, that is all - they both failed as before. I attach the pmodemdiag file as previously requested.
I will now go away and run the patches, one at a time, kindly provided by you guys and report back.

I ran the pemasu file rt2800usb-preference-fix and tried again to connect without success. The pmodemdiag file is attached.

Then I ran the rerwin pdiag-20121216 file and floundering without exact recipe of what to do next except run 'depmod'. A few more instructions would be welcome, but, since it's only 5am in Maine, will clean the system down with cfdisk and re-install everything, hoping the FULL install will also benfit from cleansing.

Sorry guys, have to suspend modem testing. There is something seriously wrong with FULL for 5.3.4 that wasn't there before. Have flagged it on BK's blog and will have to leave it there for the moment - too many other commitments to catch up on.

rt2800usb

#199 Post by sszindian »

Sage:

I too am using rt2800usb and a Linksys plugin, and have had nothing but headaches and grief with it.

I could not get wifi to connect using the 'setup' icon (desktop) to go to the function, or the 'connect' icon (desktop) to go to the setup function! Using NSS (I believe Dougal's or something like that)they would in fact allow me to configure the wifi but could not 'find' the wifi afterwards.

To my surprize, I tried clicking on the 'Tray Internet Icon' to go to the setup function, and it worked after the second setup try... have no idea why this is but it worked the same for me also in Dpup-Precise and also Exprimo.

Worth a try no?

Many thanks, ssz.
After lunch I discovered that the (still) defective FULL had actually booted up. I looked in the modules list and now, in 5.4.3 FULL, none is loaded by default. rt2800usb has been completely removed from the list, so I loaded the two on offer, rt2500/73usb and rebooted. One of the curious features of this installation is that 'depmod' in console reports 'Bus Error'. Never seen it before, no idea what it's all about, but noticed that the booting process pauses for a very long time >5mins at depmod. Blackscreening seems to have stopped now at third boot attempt (I read of other folks' experiences with this curious symptom). Tried to load 2500 or 73 with nil effect. Pointless running pmodemdiag, presumably? Nothing there to 'diag' !
Will await BK's magic touch to put Precise back in working order.
Till then adieu - at least on this thread. Probably.
Maybe not, though.
Not wishing to be defeated, in desperation, loaded the entirely inappropriate PAE version on this old all-Intel 2.66G(32-bit)/512M machine and BINGO - everything wireless is working. All the issues reported above refer to the (recommended!) retro version, which has been more useful in my testing regimens so far as I can muster kit from a K6-II/Athlon750 in small increments to a 939 and occasional loan of completely unnecessary, but widespread, multiple core machines. Wierd indeed, especially as the retro version is ~30% larger, presumably to accommodate a bigger range of ancient HW?
For completeness, I took the precaution of loading pemasu rt...fix and rerwin's pdiag. Could prove useful when moving this HD around on a caddy.
Thanks for your forebearance, folks. Look forward to BK repairing the retro version for future deployment.

I see exatcly the same mplayer output in my Upup Precise, but the video plays. So I cant find exactly useful debug info though there are several error messages. I have them also but the video still plays.
There seem to be some version mismatches from some reason.

It can be graphics card problem also.
pemasu
I tried the same mp4 video on another machine, Toshiba Satellite M205

It has a different graphics card and... the videos play.

Strange that the video plays on the ThinkPad with racy5300,
but not with precise 5430.

rt2870usb

#202 Post by broomdodger »

Precise5430 manual frugal

Downloaded the rt2870usb driver for Windows 7... it works great.

Looks like the rt2800usb driver in precise5430 is not compatible with this dongle.

http://www.ralinktech.com/en/04_support ... php?sn=501

Downloaded: 2010_0709_RT2870_Linux_STA_v2.4.0.1.tar.bz2

Tried to 'make' but it failed with errors, missing...

Will someone who knows how, compile, and test this driver.

Bill

Here is for testing. You need to remember that this driver is from year 2010 and it needed patching. Also there surely are some usb ids which are not included. But you can try. I did add preference of rt2870sta over rt2800usb to the MODULESCONFIG file in the pet.

Wpa_supplicant handling has been added in compile stage to config.mk file.

Reboot is recommended or manually:
modprobe -r rt2800usb
modprobe -r rt2x00usb
modprobe -r rt2800lib
modprobe -r rt2x00lib
modprobe rt2870sta

These Ralink devices seem to have taken over as bête noire of the wi-fi arena.
In view of mine, ssz. and others reporting Ralink issues, particularly in Precise, it would be helpful if bd could advise whether he is using the PAE or retro version? As he can see from mine and other reports, there may be video issues as well as wireless ones in the latter.

I found one thread from the 2x00 developing forum which might be relevant:
http://rt2x00.serialmonkey.com/phpBB/vi ... f=5&t=6210

I first posted patched module....but double checking...it seems that patch was already in the rt2x00usb.c so...no cure for rt2800usb with this patch.

Sorry for initial misinformation....so....I removed the attached module.

Happy Christmas anyway...I will be in relax mode also now....

Re: 96 dots per inch (Your Blog)

#209 Post by ETP »

Barry,

You will see from the following posts that you have hit on one of my main issues with Puppy:

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=81413

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=82120

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=82607

I can confirm that a change to 96 dpi will benefit 90% of users, the one possible exception being some netbook users who may need to throttle back to 84 or less during initial setup and save file creation as (depending on hardware) choice boxes may be off screen with a resolution of 1024x600.

On balance I would still however go for 96 dpi and can confirm the beneficial effect of then using hinting on LCD & IPS panels.

I believe that I was instrumental in persuading 01micko to include Fontwizard in Slacko and suggest that you also consider including his revised pet:

http://ftp.nluug.nl/ftp/pub/os/Linux/di ... -0.0.1.pet

Finally may I say how all your efforts are appreciated and wish you a Merry Xmas.
Regards ETP

Report on updating multisession Precise 5.4.x.2 to 5.4.3:

Downloaded the 5.4.3 iso from Ibiblio and burned it onto the same BD-RE (rewritable Blu-Ray disk) that contained 5.4.x.2, using Burniso2cd in Precise Puppy 5.4.x.2. (Burniso2cd will overwrite whatever is on a rewritable DVD or Blu-Ray disk without first requiring the disk to be blanked.)

After burning the Blu-Ray disk, I left it in the burner and clicked the Save icon on Precise Puppy 5.4.x.2's desktop. This saved the state of Puppy as it was in RAM as the first (two, as it turns out) sessions on the Blu-Ray disk. After 5.4.x.2 finished saving itself on the Blu-Ray disk, I rebooted and then saved again.

Now the multisession Blu-Ray Puppy boots the same as it did before I upgraded, with all my settings and installed programs intact. Only now it's Precise 5.4.3. :)

Improper video driver auto-selected

#211 Post by artsown »

On a PC having the infamous Intel 82845, I discovered that I must use
Choose (Intel) in xorgwizard. It's confusing since Intel is reported as
being used, so I never thought to try choosing it until now. When I
choose Intel, I see a report that some 810 or maybe i810 has been
removed.

The same exact thing happens on the latest versions of Slacko and
Racy. Since they all automatically came up at some high screen
resolution I never paid much attention. But there were no screen mode
options until I chose Intel.

Oops. Pmusic doesn't work after upgrading to 5.4.3.

Actually, Pmusic isn't even in Precise Puppy 5.4.3's Multimedia menu. I installed it from a .pet.
