I don't actually know anything about glxgears but I see people providing reports using that.
I've just noticed that in Slacko-5.3.3 (frugal install) with mesa added I get a glxgears frame rate of over 200 frames/sec on my old Fujitsu Siemens Pentium-M laptop,
but on the same laptop with Precise retro 5.4.1 (frugal install) I only get a glxgears frame rate of around 60 frames/sec
I tried replacing the Precise xorg.conf with the one I had in Slacko-5.3.3 just as an experiment but that caused my Precise installation to freeze on booting.
Running report-video from Slacko-5.3.3 gives the following:
Code: Select all
# report-video
radeon
Slacko Puppy, version 5.3.3 on Sat 10 Nov 2012
Chip description:
0.0 VGA compatible controller
ATI Technologies Inc RV350 [Mobility Radeon 9600 M10]
oem: ATI MOBILITY RADEON 9600
X Server: Xorg
Driver used: radeon
X.Org version: 1.9.5
dimensions: 1280x800 pixels (338x211 millimeters)
depth of root window: 24 planes
...the above also recorded in /tmp/root/ as report-video,
and archived with xorg.conf and Xorg.0.log as report-video-full.gz
# glxgears
1189 frames in 5.0 seconds = 237.657 FPS
1219 frames in 5.0 seconds = 243.653 FPS
EDIT:
When I run report-video from Puppy Precise retro 5.4.1, by default I get:
Code: Select all
# report-video
VIDEO REPORT: RetroPrecise Puppy, version 5.4.1
Chip description:
oem: ATI MOBILITY RADEON 9600
Driver used by Xorg:
vesa
Video mode used by Xorg:
Resolution: Depth 24 Depth: "Display"
...the above also recorded in /tmp/report-video
If I then run Xorgwizard from Precise retro and just let it Probe, it then automatically selects Driver used by Xorg as radeon. However, glxgears still only reports around 60 frames/sec after that:
Code: Select all
# report-video
VIDEO REPORT: RetroPrecise Puppy, version 5.4.1
Chip description:
oem: ATI MOBILITY RADEON 9600
Driver used by Xorg:
radeon
Video mode used by Xorg:
Resolution: Depth 24 Depth: "Display"
...the above also recorded in /tmp/report-video
# glxgears
Running synchronized to the vertical refresh. The framerate should be
approximately the same as the monitor refresh rate.
295 frames in 5.0 seconds = 58.969 FPS
301 frames in 5.0 seconds = 60.056 FPS
One major difference I've noted is that when I run the command:
lsmod | grep radeon
On Slacko-5.3.3 I get:
Code: Select all
radeon 741728 1
ttm 36543 1 radeon
drm_kms_helper 17455 1 radeon
drm 119536 4 radeon,ttm,drm_kms_helper
i2c_algo_bit 3600 1 radeon
i2c_core 12559 5 radeon,drm_kms_helper,drm,i2c_algo_bit,i2c_i801
hwmon 965 2 radeon,thermal_sys
The same modules are listed when I do the same in Precise retro 5.4.1, but the radeon module (first line above) then comes up with a 2 at the end, not just 1. That may have nothing to do with the different glxgears frame rates I'm getting though - I have no idea...
On Precise the following idea from
http://inebium.com/post/glxgears-vertic ... blank-mode gave no improvement to the result:
Also on Precise I obtained the following glxinfo, but doesn't help me:
Code: Select all
# glxinfo | grep -i render
direct rendering: Yes
OpenGL renderer string: Gallium 0.4 on ATI RV350
GL_EXT_vertex_array_bgra, GL_NV_conditional_render,
# glxinfo | grep -i render
direct rendering: Yes
OpenGL renderer string: Gallium 0.4 on ATI RV350
GL_EXT_vertex_array_bgra, GL_NV_conditional_render,
Hmmm, tried this on Precise Retro instead and glxgears frame rate report good now. I still don't understand all this, but I suspect all is well:
Code: Select all
# export vblank_mode=1
# glxgears
ATTENTION: default value of option vblank_mode overridden by environment.
ATTENTION: default value of option vblank_mode overridden by environment.
6071 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1213.470 FPS
6251 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1249.448 FPS
Hmmm, I'm very confused about this 'cos on Slacko, if I run the same vblank_mode command as above, I get:
Code: Select all
# export vblank_mode=1
# glxgears
1101 frames in 5.0 seconds = 220.152 FPS
1143 frames in 5.0 seconds = 228.472 FPS
Like I said, I don't understand glxgears and these confusing results. So I don't know if video frame rate performance is better of worse in Slacko-5.3.3 or Precise retro 5.4.1 on my system.
EDIT: I'm now also getting the increased glxgears frame rate in Precise retro 5.4.1 with vblank_mode=0 rather than 1 (sigh...):
Code: Select all
# export vblank_mode=0
# glxgears
ATTENTION: default value of option vblank_mode overridden by environment.
ATTENTION: default value of option vblank_mode overridden by environment.
5877 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1173.988 FPS
5935 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1186.937 FPS
...
Can anybody explain all this?
