Does every email service send requests to Gravatar.com

Does every email service send requests to Gravatar.com
Gravatar seems related to Wordpress so if one have a picture
on wordpress blog and then send email to somebody then
some email providers ask gravatar if them have a word press
picture to show.
I had never heard of it before. If you know something I hope you share.
Are there some technical term for this thing?
