Your (green) link to 7rc6 on page 1 is bouncing back to page (58).
Still doing it - sorry!

The green rc6 link is supposed to link here. All the green links, rc6, rc5 etc..., link to the release announcement in the Carolina thread.

The blue links at the top of the first post go to the repo to download ISO's or delta's.

Ah! My misunderstanding. I guess I expect coloured text to link to the subject, not a redirect to Forum discussion and announcements. At the time I first raised my comment I couldn't find the .iso only the deltae. I use CD-RW and successively overwrite them rather than mess about with file updating, although I do recognise the value of them to DUN users and mobile/tab users with mean ISP d/l limits!

Got the PAE version running liveCD - extremely good.
Stable after pfix=ram, nox, but earlier default boot up, which seemed to be OK crashed when I tried to load the Control Panel, requiring a full, hard reset ie PSU off; very odd as my HW responds OK to almost everything else. Can't rule out an isolated occurrence.

Later: spoke too soon - it crashed during a return from screensaver/sleep. Will check on other HW.

Another day: seems to have been an HW issue - Radeon card +' unusual' stick of 1Gb. Everything OK now. Great release.

Nice Point upgrade

Having a pleasant summer in Portland Oregon, US.

I dnld the Delta the other day. This 7rc6 is very interesting. In truth, I'm swinging towards Pemasu's Upup 3.9.9 because of the kernel newness :D ( + i like JWM).

Hi,

I was a user of Saluki until bought this new laptop Acer Aspire One D270 (GMA3600) it had no sound there (I couldn't remember about its WiFi). Any chance you know if the problem persist here with Carolina?

Also any chance that you will update the Kernel in any near time?

Thanks.

@ Sage

Glad you found the link. Strange, I've never had Carolina crash on me.

@ dennis-slacko531

Thanks for the link at your web site.

@ rasul

The Carolina kernel is a bit newer than Saluki but not by much. Your sound probably won't work, but there's only one way to find out.

The kernel will not be updated. Development will be stopping when Carolina 1.0 is released, which is very soon.

Quick test.

All looked really nice. Booted to horrible resolution, but after xorgwizard, got 1920x1080 which looked nice. But small on a regular monitor (as always)

Played a song on clementine (flac) then clicked on a video at the same time, no sound from video. Stopped Clementine, still no sound. Exited Clementine and restarted video and sound started.

Reminded me of ubuntu 7.04. It did that.

.
Since Carolina-1.0 will be released soon, I've decided not to do an rc6 non-pae, and just do a 1.0 version.

Fantastic news. I like the 'harpup' entree - used it twenty years ago with you-know-what!

Carolina 1.0 is released, for details see the first post.

This is the final release, we would like to thank all those who have tested and provided fixes to some of the problems we encountered,
special thanks to Elroy for all the hard work and sleepless nights he endured.

We hope all that use Carolina find it useful, it is limited in that newer applications will not run due to the older glibc,
but it still has a lot of applications that will fulfill most peoples needs and we will continue to maintain and update the repository.

Hearty agreement!!

I just use '-lina-lite, being a casual user rather tnan an expert.

Are there any improvements in Carolina that would benefit me?

'-lina-lite seems to work well.

Thanks again
Sheldon

PS
it is limited in that newer applications will not run due to the older glibc,
I don't know about (and maybe don't care about) newer applications: I'm a retro person.

WOW !!! :D :D :D
Great compliments and many thanks for the great and hard work !!! :)

I will try it immediately, I use Carolina since 005 release and after the improvements it's sure a fantastic thing !!! :)

I'm downloading the iso, but just a question: I have to install the nvidia driver, what are the version of devx and kernel I must use? I suppose they are devx_lina_006 and kernel_source_3.2.13_ski ... :?

However, thanks again ! :)

Yes, the devx is the same, just rename your existing copy to devx_lina_1.0.sfs, the kernel_source_3.2.13_ski is the same.

I will upload a renamed copy of the devx so there is no confusion

That's hard to say as there are a lot of updates and changes in Carolina,
it would be best to read the change logs in the first post to see what improvements there have been.

We hope you enjoy our effort.

A bug report

When making a pet package using 'Convert to pet package'
right click

-----> if 'Building block' is desired because there is no desktop file
then a desktop file is included which is very undesirable.

______________________________________________________
When I typed 'gtkdialog-splash' in terminal I got a no permission
warning.

As Geoffrey said, read the change log. We have worked very hard to make Carolina as user friendly and feature rich as possible.

You can run lina without the adrive and have a fully functional desktop with all of the features we have introduced such as pac-tools, simple file sharing etc...... This would not be much different than lina-lite and you can also make a custom adrive or add apps in your savefile

That would be an issue with the dir2pet script

I don't get that with gtkdialog-splash, to be sure I extracted a copy from the ISO and swapped it with the existing one and it works without having to give it permission

Code: Select all

# gtkdialog-splash

gtkdialog-splash

an easy replacement for yaf-splash in Puppy (NOT Puppy <=4.x)
 mave 30.05.2010
 no warranty
 Thanks for Puppy!

usage: gtkdialog-splash [OPTIONS] [-timeout SEC] -text TEXT | -kill PID

 -text EXPRESSION
 -timeout COUNT (in seconds)
-icon GTK-XXX (for example: gtk-info all gtk-stock-symbols, default: none)
 OR path/to/pixmap.png|gif|jpeg
 -icon_width WIDTH in pixels
-bg COLOR (background color red, blue, yellow..., default: grey)
 -bg_gradient true|false (default: true)
-fg COLOR (font color, default: black)
 -placement center|mouse|top|bottom|top-left|bottom-left (default: center)
 -close never|mouseover|box (default is mouseover)
-deco TITLE (shows windows decorations, with title)
 -font NAME
 -fontsize SIZE
-align ALIGNMENT left, right or center -margin SIZE (default: 10)
 -border true|false (default: true)

-kill PID (process ID called before: PID=0 auto-search fo the last one,
PID=xxxxx kill the last one read by PID=$!)
Can someone else confirm if it is working ok please.

A big thank you to the developers, I really appreciate your hard work, Carolina is very slick and easy for an idiot like me to use, it has mostly all the packages I like at install, so apart from configuring the desktop to my liking its ready to go.

to say thank you I will make another donation to barry towards his ubuntu edge
