Carolina Linux is a fork of the Saluki project. Saluki is a woof-build based on Racy 5.2 with Xfce

Carolina is a fork of the Saluki project. Saluki is a woof-build based on Racy 5.2 with Xfce. The suggested target hardware are computers less than 6 years old. It should run reasonably fast on older machines and netbooks, but Xfce does need a bit more ram and cpu than the standard ROX/Jwm puppy - probably at least 512MB of ram and 1GHz CPU for decent performance.

Our goals are much the same as Saluki's - user-friendliness, innovation, improved look and feel, and solid, functional applications. We will attempt to address the most common complaints of new Puppy users and raise the bar for Puppy usability, customizability, and polish. We intend to enhance what Saluki started.

  *Straightforward MTP device support for easy access to modern Android devices!

Carolina comes in 2 flavors, regular, and lite (Carolite), for those who like their pups slim.

I run Lupen, kernel 2.5.38.4, which is Xfce4.6.2, with Compiz/Cairo dock..
Interested to see what Xfce4 stuff you have!!

Does Carolina intend to support 'fd0' drive?

When I had asked jemimah way, way back in Saluki thread, she didn't seem to think it was necessary... some disagreed with that decision including myself!

It was there earlier. Maybe problems were found and its being replaced.

I'm sure it will be back.

No it's not a typo, pup-volume-monitor-0.1.7: Lightweight drive management.

I reported there was a problem with the pup-volume-monitor to akash_rawal, he kindly rewrote it,
this as fixed problems with unmounting and applications crashing while mounting drives.

Is Carolina compatible with other distro repositories? Like Upup, Spup or Dpups?

It does say in medium-large red letters at the top to check back sometime today for an ISO It's the second line of the post.

There's no ISO link now I think, but there will be later tonight!

Thanks for that, starhawk, you are correct.

The ISO should be ready by 4:00 pm GMT. If you try to download the ISO before that (I'm uploading as I write this) chances are very high that you will have downloaded a corrupt ISO.

Carolina is almost totally compatible with Saluki, save for the xfce things, and wary5.

Carolina currently does not support 'fd0' drive, but we may in future versions.

Looks like 4:00pm GMT is 12:00 Noon for US Eastern (EST).

I look forward to trying Carolina out. I'll be attempting it on a ThinkPad T4* laptop with a Pentium M CPU and 2gb RAM.

EDIT: just curious, how did you choose the name? I live in North Carolina USA and I'm chuckling over the location matchup.

With the size of Carolina being over 300 megs, it seems like a small thing like adding fd0 as a device and an app for formatting floppies would not add that much size to it.
And there are still people that find a floppy useful.
Is not Wake Pup made for making a floppy to boot Puppy?

I am going to wait a few days before downloading the ISO as it may be in the process of being uploaded and I would not want to get a partial file what with my slow internet speed of 1.5mbs.

The Carolina breed is a wild breed from the Eastern United States, commonly know as the "American Dingo". It has a very old lineage, but wasn't discovered until the 1970's. Here's an article from Wikipedia about the Carolina breed. Ironically, the name for the distro was suggested by an Australian.

By the way, I'd be very curious to hear how 'lina runs on your think pad

The ISO is available in the repository. See the first post on this thread for links, as they have now been added.

could you apply this patch for 845 users? or does it interfere with other graphics cards?
