Cannot bring X up (Solved)

I got ancient laptop in great conditions and I'd like to give it a second life.
It is ThinkPad 560E, P166, 80Mb ram, 2Gb hdd, Trident video with W2K currently installed.
I managed to boot puppy 2.17.1 from ntfs partition but neither Xorg nor Xvesa work on this machine. The 12.1" lcd display is SVGA 800x600 16bit - that's all I could found. VertRefresh supposed to be 60Hz but HorizSync - no idea. Puppy guesses it's 31KHz. The card is capable for 1024x768 and even 1280x1024. But no screens whatever I try... how to get one?
Many thanks in advance.

Thank you for the links.
Just tried 2.14 top10: the results are identical :|
I definitely have a problem with X but the guy from second link had no such problems moreover he installed from CD (full install) that's not an option for me.
Perhaps I need full specification for my flat panel to calculate modeline: sometimes it's the only solution...
I used to read somewhere that there is a software that probes video hardware and is able to list all the parameters unfortunately I couldn't find that info again.
May be some other ideas?

Well this thread could be marked as "Solved" :D
I only modified /etc/X11/xorg.conf as follows:
-commented out the 3 options for DPMS monitors since mine doesn't smell like DPMS one;
-commented out xrandr line since it doesn't help me anyway;
-set VertRefresh to 55-75 (was 40-70) and HorizSync to 30-50 (was 31.5);
-changed video driver from "trident" to "vesa" (guessing that was the key move)
Then just entered "xwin jwm".
X runs amazingly fast keeping in mind that I have only 80Mb ram and 380Mb free space on hdd.
I even rushed writing to the forum in newly acquired desktop but then found out that internet is down ... sorry it's already another thread. :wink:
