Change language on chinese Puppy Linux MACIS XFce

#1 Post by soldiaz »

Dear folks as I am new to Linux this one might be a silly question...

I grabbed a chinese Puppy derivate and all of it is in Chinese language

Coming from Windows I opened the sfs file and looked for entries which might be chánged ...

Please help me: how can I change the language to English or German.

This is what I get so far:

\usr\share\xfce4\panel\plugins\

\usr\etc\fonts\conf.avail\95-chinese.conf

http://www.minilinux.net/node/1681#comment-9827

OR am I supposed to change just this one:

D:\MACIS_536.SFS\usr\share\locale\zh_CN\LC_MESSAGES\ ???

In /etc/profile.d/lang.sh change "LANG=zh_CN.UTF-8" to "LANG=en_US"
or German
Change the above setting to "LANG=de_DE.UTF-8" instead.
But if there is no /usr/share/locale/de_DE directory with appropriate .mo files in it, all the UIs will remain in the default language (that is, English).

Thank you for the quick reply.

Unfortunately there is no lang.sh in /etc/profile.d. There is only a file called pkgconfig.

English would be ok, then I can understand menus and stuff...and

Where can I get German .mo files?

If there really isn't, then put that same "LANG=" string into /root/.bash_profile (create one if this doesn't exist).

Either from whoever built the distro in question - if there does exist a German "langpack" for that distro, which is not very probable. Or from a compatible Puppy variant which does have such a langpack - if you can find out which other Puppy that Chinese distro is based on. And failing all that - by recompiling each and every piece of software by yourself. :-(

Yeah! I found this on the author's page: Slacko 531 ...no Geman language pak found yet ...English would be great too.

Recompiling = make new .mo files?

Thats what I thought about: leave everything as is and just overwrite Chinese packs.

Overwrite .mo files within usr\share\i18n\locales ?

Could you please provide French language files parce que ca sera etre moins grave a comprendre :-p

Alors I've mixed up few German language packs which resulted in couple of files remaining original Chinese.

It works fine! How did you get rid of These chinese characters on the Desktop? And when you click right mouse button?

Kind regards Soldiaz

Viens poster sur le forum francophone. Oui est bilingue german french. He lives in Germany. I succed in using Macis, Oui speaks german, he will do the interpreter between us. Achtung : i don't promise to have solutions, but we could think about them together. It will be easier than translate french to english, then english to german. Isn'it ?
Garbled chinese characters : i have two pupsaves, one where french has overwritten chinese .mo, and the other pupsave where french .mo are in US yankee's pack.
Two ways of running Macis,, either chinese characters are correct, and you can only work with icons, or you work with american version, and chinese is garbled.

I prefer with chinese characters, because i know icons or where is located what i am searching :D
