It sounds like your BIOS is confused by this additional USB device. You can try looking in the BIOS for a setting that changes USB detection.
Other than updating the BIOS (which I wouldn't recommend), I don't think that there much else you can do about it.

On most machines, there is a key you can press, like DEL or F10. The initial boot screen should give you a message.

Ok. my bios is set to default and the options in this old bios is very limited.
And in the described situation the pc never reaches the state where I can press F10 or F12, only COMPAQ is visible on my screen

This is new information.
Is it a powered hub? Maybe when you plug in the webcam, it draws too much current.
What happens if you plug it into port 1 instead of the modem?

Hi rcrsn51
I booted once more and this time the F10 and F12 were available. Maybe when start failed was due to the 2tb hd was scanned for files
Anyway I altered the bios settings to the best of my ability and believings
It is a powered logitech hub
And now the cam, at least this one, working ok
Thanks a lot for advice.

Glad to help. For the benefit of other users, what BIOS settings did you change? Is it necessary to boot WITHOUT the USB hard drive plugged in?

I really do not know much about bios setup. That is why I usually use the default settings. There was a lot deactivated which I activated

No, now I can boot with the hub fully populated.
