As can be seen, I've put Slacko 6.3 on the laptop its working perfectly well, I'm having problems putting Libreoffice onto this machine, I've tried the latest version LO 6.1 but it will not set up the .sfs file, I get a failure message without further explanation or details of why its failed.
What options do I have? I'm not tied to Slacko, is there another small distro that would work on this machine and get LO and other pretty standard apps onboard as well?
Thanks for reading and your assistance.

.
I think that would be Tahrpup 6.0.5 being suggested.
That processor is a 32bit.
So, only 32bit versions of Puppy will work.
Xenialpup 7.5 would be good to try to get a little newer and updated core files and programs.
Bionicpup32 8.0 may even work OK.
Anything not working?
There are other Puppy versions in Puppy Projects section of this forum.
Best if you can use one of the newer versions of Puppy Linux.

The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.
When I was a kid I wanted to be older.... This is not what I expected
YaPI(any iso installer)

Tahr is still my first suggestion but maybe dpup stretch will work if the original poster wants to go newer. On the flip side if the original poster wants to go older, darry has done a lot of upgrades to a 4.0 series pup:bigpup wrote:I think that would be Tahrpup 6.0.5 being suggested.
Best if you can use one of the newer versions of Puppy Linux.

if one doesn't want something as old as a 4.0 series pup but something older than the above mentioned pups, there is JRB's precise light.

Many thanks both for your suggestions, I'm very happy using xenial64 on my machine so I'll give xenial32 a go.
UPDATE - I've just tried xenial7.0.6.iso on the DELL machine and its come up with a message - PAE disabled - unable to boot please use a kernel appropriate to your CPU.
Tahrpup-6.0.5 has loaded but won't connect to internet. Investigating.

Hi
look perhaps also for the old slacko 5.3 family (diverse iso's) because they are so tiny (*1 ...
http://distro.ibiblio.org/puppylinux/puppy-5.3/
http://distro.ibiblio.org/puppylinux/puppy-5.3.1/

http://distro.ibiblio.org/puppylinux/pe ... es-common/
http://distro.ibiblio.org/puppylinux/pe ... -common32/
Both are also VERY useful:
http://distro.ibiblio.org/puppylinux/pe ... ges-lucid/
http://www.smokey01.com/
Remaster it without the old seamonkey (the size can decrease under 100 Mb) with "removing built in packages"and add a browser like IRON as *.pet (in the new main sfs or as mybowser.sfs ouside (can be added in the iso as well as the devx.sfs at the last remasterizing step)!
think about including a flashplayer in /usr/mozilla/plugins/ before remasterising (you will find above *.pet able to work under 2,9 Mb depending of your needs!
(you can also adapt your locales / keyboard; I use gmt+2 with utc (check the comment mark if right!!!) and make your changes in /etc (/etc/X11/xorg.conf , /etc/xdg/templates/_root_.jwmrc , /etc/clock , /etc/keymap and make the right link for /etc/localtime ! You can also complete your /usr/share/hunspell , your /usr/share/fonts if you need some Korean or Devanagari etc. fonts, and modify your /root/.jwmrc for ex. for a startup command like setxkbmap, same thing as above in etc!!!)
(*1 for other having the same needs but with an old AMD64, the equivalent in 64 bit would be Quirky Wary64 version 6.99, released Feb 2015 but you can't remaster it and in this case, you need a lot of RAM being rarely available on very old machines...

I see you have a Pentium M processor. These will usually work OK with PAE if you edit your menu.lst file to add "forcepae -- forcepae" to the end of your kernel boot line.LeithR wrote:UPDATE - I've just tried xenial7.0.6.iso on the DELL machine and its come up with a message - PAE disabled - unable to boot please use a kernel appropriate to your CPU.

Hi, LeithR.
Try apacheOpenOffice 4.16? It's the latest version.
I've got an sfs available here, which I've been running faultlessly for a couple of years
on xenialPup-7.0 and DPupStretch-7.0.
In spite of the nay-sayers, aOO is still top notch. It does pretty much everything
LibreOffice does, but with a more familiar menu.
~~~
Or maybe it's the sfs? Is the sfs "hooking up" properly? Besides, you don't always need
an sfs. As most people do not know, you can install aOO, LibreOffice, FireFox,
SeaMonkey, the java JRE, and some other very big apps, by themselves, outside of
your Puppy and of your pupsave file, in their own directory on /mnt/home.
Then you create a symlink of the executable in /usr/bin, maybe bring an icon of it on the
desktop, and you're ready to go.
The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.
When I was a kid I wanted to be older.... This is not what I expected
Yes, that should work. I have an old Pentium M machine and forcepae works on it.6502coder wrote:I see you have a Pentium M processor. Radky Stretch might be good with a cheat frugal.
If you copy the main >>> .sfs file to the hard drive,
what I call a cheat frugal, Puppy boots off the cd,
looks for the main file,sees the same >> sfs file on the hard drive,
and finishes booting from there.
Like an instant ram increase.
The file must match the names.
Chris.
Jamesbond did a thread on this. It uses pfx=nocopy and requires a hard drive:cthisbear wrote:Radky Stretch might be good with a cheat frugal.
my Brother-HL-2035-hl1250.ppd does always work pretty but without Double Side of Paper (I know, some cups + gutenprint combinaisons allow to print double sided out! But the package cups + gutenprint is always different in each Linux version !). search for an operable *ppd for your brother and save it in your private depository!!!
LeithR did continue his story of his mistake in a separate new thread for whatever reason!
