kernel 3.12.3 won't run ...?

#721 Post by charlie6 »

Hi,
In a repo for wheezy pets, to be found somewhere in this thread, there is a pet for installing the 3.12.3 kernel:
http://mirror.vcu.edu/pub/gnu_linux/pup ... 3-dpup.pet

I have installed it but can't get the 3.12.3 kernel to run.

Doing

Code: Select all

sh-3.00# uname -r
3.5.2-dpup
sh-3.00#
returns 3.5.2-dpup

How can one get the new kernel running?

Thanks for any help / answer :)

Cheers, Charlie

Oscartalks, I installed ssl1j from your repository, but the console reports:

Code: Select all

sh-4.2# ./config --prefix=/usr --openssldir=/etc/ssl shared
sh: ./config: No such file or directory
sh-4.2#

A couple of niggles sorted:

A. The Poodle

1.Type about:config in the top line of browser (promise that you'll be careful)
2. Scroll down to

Code: Select all

security.tls.version.min
3. Click on it, and change 0 to 1.
3A. https://zmap.io/sslv3/ to test.

B: The stupid reset everything offer and lose your plugins and settings that sometimes might crop up after 60 days.

1.Type about:config in the top line of browser (promise that you'll be careful)

2 Highlight one of the entries (any will do)
but this time right click and select NEW/ Boolean.

3. And enter in the text box

Code: Select all

browser.disableResetPrompt
and set it to

Code: Select all

true
.

The code is not something which you should run. I was just giving the configure options that were used when I compiled it in case anyone was interested. You just install the .pet as normal and that's all. Apologies if I am getting confused or if my post was confusing.

edoc wrote:QupZilla has a weird bug in Carolina where it mishandles certificates.

Is that true in Dpup Wheezy as well?
In Dpup Wheezy 3.5.2.11 there are some ca-certificates in /usr/share/share/ca-certificates which seems like the wrong location (2 shares) and I don't think the update-ca-certificates script is included anywhere.

If you install the ca-certificates package from Debian or Slackware (Patches)
http://mirrors.slackware.com/slackware/ ... ck14.0.txz
and make sure to run update-ca-certificates this places the certificates in /usr/share/ca-certificates and creates symlinks in /etc/ssl/certs

You should then find that QupZilla will load pages requiring certificates correctly.

Must admit though, I don't fully understand it so if someone can explain how it is all meant to work then please go ahead and do so.

oops, my error

On another note, did you ever get to the bottom of the keyboard randomly exchanging the " key for the @ key, it still sometimes happens in Wheezy?

I think Barry said it was some ubuntu deb file.
It's just about the only niggle left in this distro from what I can tell.

Yes, this was libx11
I believe Pemasu compiled a couple of fixed versions.
Just having a hunt around as I type.
Maybe this one is best:-

I do use several different Puppies, but must say Dpup Wheezy is my current favourite and that has been the case for quite some time now.

Great, thanks for the link, I must have missed that.

I might be a bit behind the curve, but a while ago, I found that by dropping the old Xorg_High.pet bits into usr/bin/(glxgears stuff) /usr/lib/dri and usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions, that it would boot to the desktop on any computer without that dreaded black screen happening.
It seemed a good basis to provide direct video rendering from the off for a 37mb (uncompressed) extra size, or less if you just wanted Intel or a specific video driver.
Then it could be upgraded if wanted to the brand new Mesa stuff if required.

No idea whether DPup will boot on brand new computers with UEFI or whatever it is, and the new cpus, graphics and motherboards, but it would be nice if it did!

Dpup Wheezy 3.5.2.11
Package (binary) gphotofs appears to be missing.

I recently obtained a Samsung smartphone and tried to connect it via USB to see the files but it would not mount.
I installed the official .deb and this seems to have fixed it.

I just made a fresh install of Dpup Wheezy, made all updates and then added all the pets that I like. Dpup Wheezy is probably my all-time favorite puppy. It is beautiful and rock-solid.
Many thanks Oscar, for providing many .pets, and keeping this puppy alive and kicking.

OscarTalks - I had to thank you for compiling Audacity for WheezyPup
Sorry about wrong thread... the original wasnt working for replies.

audacity (for me) has been broken since wheezypup was first available...

For the twentieth time in two years, I tried again last night for five hours to
compile it according to "easy instructions" online... failed again... such a
basic app... it must be broken downline somewhere.

Anyway - your audacity pet worked right away... hooray !!

thanks again

Hi, Iguleder.

Glad to see you back.

What is "Devuan", please? I do not understand.
Thanks in advance.

It's a fork of Debian, which allows the use of multiple init systems. It's good as a base for Puppy, because the systemd dependency of many packages in Devuan is dropped, while distros like Ubuntu adopt it.

I'd be interested in your version of dpup, provided:

1. It will not have xorgwizard and boot straight to desktop (like your rlsd does).
2. It will not ping Google, or any other site.
3. It will not connect on its own to icanhazip, or any other site.

Using mount-wizard instead of desktop drive icons will be an additional bonus (again, like in rlsd).
