minidv firewire interfacing

What works, and doesn't, for you. Be specific, and please include Puppy version.

Hi all,
I'm trying to follow instructions from BK's blog about minidv firewire interfacing but I'm a bit confused, The last post from this page http://bkhome.org/blog/?viewDetailed=02761 from smil99, I'm able to follow most of it, but part 4 where smil99 says "fw0 already exists in /dev but didn't work with dvgrab so inside the /dev folder, I created a symlink fw1 to raw1394" the thing I don't understand is did smil99 create fw1? and if so how? mknod /dev/fw1? I know that the ln -s command will create a simlink but there's no point in making a simlink to something that doesn't exist right?
er.. I should write my pc specs here, I'm forever forgetting my video card specifics :roll:

So er... it would seem as though I was being too methodical. I skipped the last step from the smil99 post and just tried dvgrab, surprise surprise it works great. 8)
