Today marks the release of the first community developed Puppy iso. Many people contributed to the development of this version, and the level of involvement has been truly outstanding. The major features of this update are:
Firefox-1.5.0.3 browser with Puppy bookmarks and startpage
xdg dynamically generated menus, portable for use in multiple WM's and ready for internationalisation
Geany-0.5 text editor as a replacement for Beaver
    Transmission-0.5 bittorrent client
New graphical backgroundsetter by Mark Ulrich
    Leafpad-0.8.9
    Sylpheed-2.2.4
    Improved trash utility by dvw
jwm-1.7 with blinky-0.8 and minixcal-1.1 (thanks to Joe and Lior for making this the very best jwm ever!)
Improved integration of Rox-2.4.1 as an optional package by Pizzasgood
An improved xkb setup by Pakt, with better i18n support
    Enhanced and simplified interface
    Multiple bugfixes

It is very difficult to give proper credit to all who were involved in this project, as we had countless testers as well as numerous suggestions and pearls of wisdom offered by the community. While it's not always possible to please every person with every aspect of such a project I believe that most users will find this to be one of the most complete, usable, and stable releases yet made in the Puppy-1.x series.

Users who have previously been running an alpha or beta version of 109 should reset the file /etc/puppyversion to read 108 before booting this, in order to allow the upgrade script to perform it's work. Please also back up any important data first.

mirrors (more are sure to appear shortly):

Barry has said that he will support this effort with an announcement on his news blog, but is currently out of town somewhere in Perth, so it is up to us to spread the word. He will also be making this release available for purchase, but has given any of us authorization to do so as well provided proper credit is given. Look for an update to usr_devx.sfs to appear in the next couple of days as well as an updated Puppy-unleashed core.

Enjoy and have fun. Don't be shy about posting feedback here on the forum, positive or negative.

Nathan

Downloaded it and it looks great ! (I'm typing from 109CE now). I like the simplified menu. I have been using puppy 107 on my laptop and 108r1 on our families home computer. Will update to 109 CE.

I just got some old outdated computers from our church. I'll see if Puppy can resurrect some of them to donate to some good use.

Kudos to all puppies, lobsters,.....

Very Happy
I am using 109 right now, and it is an absolutely outstanding version !

Very good job, I want to congratulate all the members of the community who took the time to make it happen...

-Here's a simple question : I am now running 109 from a live-cd. I have 108r1 on my pendrive.
-Is it possible to upgrade frome my pendrive 108r1 to 109, or do you guys recommend formating the pendrive and re-installing 109 ?

And I wouldn't be honest if I didn't mention the traditional SOUND ISSUE...

I really hate to have to say it, but, no, sound doesn't work on 109 (just like in any other version so far...)

However, I will download and try the beta version of Puppy2 to post some feedback...

For the information of any new reader, there is no sound for me, in VIA 82xxx integrated chipset. I am confident sound works great on other hardware. (Sis chipset usually don't have sound neither...)

Anyway let me repeat my applause to that great team work, and all my friendship and respect to the Puppy crew !

Cool

It is rather easy in most cases to upgrade an installation on a pendrive, just launch the installer and choose 'upgrade' when prompted for it.

The sound issue is a common one, although it has gotten better and better for me over the year or so I've used Puppy. Puppy2 does promise better support in that area, from what I can tell so far.

This is great news! It's a hurricane of a news (coincided with the coming and going of hurricane "Caloy" here Smile ).

Power is just restored so am downloading now.

Rarsa has done a lot of work for the XDG menus in 1.09CE...

Coolness. You forgot to mention that there are now more loop devices. Smile Now I just have to set my stuff back up and re-do my bookmarks (they've been in need of cleaning anyway, otherwise I'd just copy them over).

Nah, I'm too lazy to re-do my bookmarks, so I copied them. They match the mess on my computer desk at least Smile

What did you do to Firefox though? It won't stop nagging me about clearing my personal data. If I were on a public computer that would be fine, but I want it to save the stuff on this one. I have it set to save it and the box keeps popping up anyways. If I didn't want it to save it, I'd have it set to not save it in the first place. I assume it's a setting in about:config, but that thing is huge and I don't feel like digging through it if you can remember which one it was.

Just go into the preferences dialog, open the privacy section, and click on the cache tab. Down near the bottom there is a button marked settings that brings up another dialog, where you can set this up however you want. There's almost never any reason to go into about:config anymore.

Sorry you found it annoying, I should have consulted others on this bit I guess.

My apologoes, it will still be another day or two before I can announce
109 on my own developer news page.
Right now I'm at a public library.

My friend who has adsl, currently doesn't. Changing from Westnet to iinet
there have been delays, like westnet not removing the "adsl codes from
the line" when they said they had.

Tomorrow I might take my PC to a sister who has just got cable
internet.
Thursday arvo I'll be back home.
