You think the original author would have fixed it eh? Lazy so'n'so he is!

Did you find the original .pfd file? It's buried somewhere in this forum.

Anyhow, I guess we can have pwidgets-2.4.1 in the repo now. I'm amazed that the ancient conky still works.

Cheers
The original author probably wouldn't stoop to using my technique. I started with a font that worked (open source of course) and pasted in your icons and changed the Font Info. Down and dirty, thats me.

I'm running 4 machines on one monitor with a KVM switch. One of the machines is a file and PXE server. With any Xorg past 1.7.7 xorg freezes up when I switch to another machine on the monitor. I just load the xorg_base and xserver from spup-051 over the top and I'm good to go. Might be useful for others with video problems :?:

slacko beta4 and brookdale

#576 Post by cowboy »

o1micko,

Just a quick report - was able to boot into desktop with no issue on this Brookdale chip. Opened some windows, no initial problems. Unsure if you have incorporated the "Brookdale" fix into 5.4 (or 5.3.3 for that matter), but first run seemed ok. I've never had an issue with 5.3.1, and very few with 5.3.3 (and those were mostly flash related crashes). Thanks. Should you need anything specifically, just let me know.

No Shutdown

#577 Post by davec51 »

I have the latest build of Slacko in a frugal installation on my hard drive. As usual, Puppy is the most flexible, most efficient Linux I have used --and I have used many, including many Puppies.
A problem, however, has come up: Nothing happens when I try to close Puppy. Neither the reboot option nor the shut down option does anything at all. I have to simply turn the machine off (a Dell Optiplex GX520, by the way).

posting from a lenovo t61 using 5.3.7.1-PAE live cd

everything working well so far apart from abiword 'white' page not visible on start, minimize and back to correct

have added chromium 22 (sfs) and wake on lan (pet)

like the addition of premote rdesktop (normally install x11 & tightvnv)

looking really good - thanks

:)

EDIT:

well, a bit early to post

shortly after original post I was unable to mount one of my drives so tried to restart X but system hang and everything went slow

am now posting from the non-PAE version (I have 4gb installed but had issues with the slacko 5.3.3 PAE also)

premote wouldn't connect using vnc so have installed tightvnc

previous slacko pets seem to be working ok so far

:)

Yeah, vnc is not included, rdesktop and ssh (client) are. It's easy to install ssh (server). Infrastructure is there already. As for vnc, I might have to find a SlackBuild and add it to the repo.

Slacko - RC1 [5.4]

Manual frugal install to hard drive.
I installed the proprietary nvidia driver and configured it to use two
monitors.

JWM doesn't seem work with this setup so I compiled fluxbox 1.3.2 and it
does work with two monitors, it's going to take some time to setup the
menus but it should work okay, for now I'm using the "run" command on
the fluxbox menu a lot :)

Report-video still has the vesa bug.

Slacko - RC1 [5.4]

#587 Post by ETP »

Hi 01micko,

There are some errors relating to JWM in === /tmp/xerrs.log ===

A rogue line in .jwmrc-tray is one of the causes:

Code: Select all

Thanks, fixed.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

There are 2 far more serious bugs, both in PPM and both woof.. while Barry is busy prettying up upu/dpup slacko has taken a knock for the worse.
  • clicking a pet fails to run fixmenus
  • installing something that requires deps from the slacko repo also searches and installs old packages from the old slacko-5.3x repo
I will look at the first one, possibly roll back the changes, the second one I can fix by eliminating the old slacko repo. Nothing from there should be installed anyway, but you can still add it by choice. Install anything from there and you are on your own  .

The pet below fixes issues 1and 2 and also fixes deps for google-chrome. I have also reuploaded bibletime, it was a bad compile.

Hi Mick,
RC1 is certainly snappier

However, the problem with sound in the XOs exist and trying to truck it down I think I came across a bigger problem. Installing udev-182 from the official slackware repo brakes Slacko (XO or not). Not just the sound. Even worse, removing it with PPM totally brakes the build (X will not start after removal of udev-182).

I do not know if this is a Slackware package problem or a Slacko issue. I do know that Precise and Ubuntu udev-175 do not have this problem (or Slacko 5.3.x and slackware udev-165).

On another matter, the 3-level deep menus are really user unfriendly as users should not only guess the category but the sub-category to find what they want. The fact that some apps are placed in not "evident" subcategories makes things worse. jwm_menu_create is certainly snappier than fixmenus but it may need some rework on the "3-level deep" part...

udev is a mess. I'll leave it at that, except that anything after 175 is no good for puppy. Fedora uses kmod.. no? Any idea how they are getting sound? You could try compiling module-init-tools for XO builds, would most likely work.

You can configure that if you want ..SUBMENU="" in ~/.jwm/JWMRC (and /etc/JWMRC if distro building). However, I strongly disagree with 1 big column of stuff, it looks awful and is slow to navigate. Tiers are staying.
