How do I install Wine in FF non PAE version of slacko?

Not after reboot, but after a cold boot it boots to the desktop.
A normal shutdown or reboot does this:
Stops at screen showing:

login: root (automatic login)
login: root login on tty1

Yes just copy those files to the USB flash drive.

I have Grub4dos installed to the MBR of the hard drive with an entry in the menu.lst for booting from the USB flash drive. Have USB flash drive plugged in when I boot to the Grub4dos menu.

Would it be too much to ask for your menu.lst entry?

The problem I have is different than yours. There is no grub or HD in my system. Just the USB stick.
However, when I used an old initrd/init that successfully booted from the USB/SDcard it also hanged at shutdown. I think this is a separate rc.shutdown issue.

Ok, silly me found the wine .desktop files under ~/.local, where they have always been, but none of them seem to work for me. They do have a similar syntax as you describe and some of the commands work from the commandline but all throw an error due to %f being appended to each one. So either way, they'd need to be hacked if moved to /usr/share/applications.

Again, jury is out on that one.

Not sure if it will work since developer has discontinued use in current version of Slacko

What pupmode does your /etc/rc.d/PUPSTATE show?

IIRC 06 is highly experimental which must mean problematic. I am not sure that I
understand the intended purpose of mode 06 unless it is a means of exceeding the
normal savefile size limit. If so it would probably apply to a partition on a
USB HDD. BK may be the person to explain.

With non-pae ff:

Run simple Grub Legacy.
After assigning location of menu.lst (/dev/sdax), it doesn't
create the list or go any further.

Have never seen this happen before.

Slacko seems more snappy because the screen refresh is much faster - eg browser pages appear almost instantly, whereas in lupo the same pages take a half second or so to display.

It was while I was experimenting with glxgears in both Slacko and Lupo that I stuffed up the windows manager in Lupo (I have posted a question in the beginners section). FYI both Slacko and Lupo give about 62 fps according to glxgears.

When Puppy is installed to hard drive in what we call "frugal" mode, we have the choice of saving the session to either a file or to the entire partition. The same thing holds for Puppy installed on a USB stick.

However, to save to the entire partition, it must be a Linux filesystem. It can't be done on a fat or ntfs partition.

Of course, saving session to a file has it's advantages, such as you can have lots of them and they are easy to backup. But, they do have a size limitation, I think of about 4GB although I have never tested that.

Saving to the entire partition is a kind of quasi-full-Linux-installation. You are using the entire partition to save your session, so you have available all the free space of that partition.

You could create a linux partition at the end of your stick but it would only be worth doing if the partition size exceeds the max savefile size.

If you are using a linux partition on the stick you could try removing the fsck code.

Pnethood is broken. This is because nbtscan, it's major dependency is broken. It's failing to find windows 7 shares, (probably vista too). It intermittently finds XP shares, always finds UNIX-like shares. It's a very old code base and has just been hacked at over the years without actually being developed.

There are 2 alternatives and they both work.

1. YASSM by rcrsn51 (in the network section of "Additional Software" forum)

2. "Network" rox-app by kirk and jamesbond in Fatdog. I'll have to build a pet for that for testing.

The nicest networking implementation is the Places feature in Precise-Lxpup with Mate1.4 desktop from Jejy69....

It integrates all protocols (Samba, ftp, etc.) into a unified interface through the file manager.

Now if that could be somehow retrofitted to slacko that would be great
