This game works in -=Quirky Linux - 1.40=- OS when the -=NVidia=- proprietary driver is installed.
To install SFS in -=Quirky Linux - 1.40=- ===>

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but how do I get this game to start? I'm using Slacko 5.3.3 and if I mount the SFS then click on the /usr/bin/hurrican file, nothing happens...

Try running it from the terminal and see if you get error messages.

Thanks, I'll give that a go, but could you tell me how I type the location of a file within a mounted SFS because "/mnt/+downloadsfolder+hurrican_sfs4.sfs/usr/bin/hurrican" doesn't work and I don't know how to enter its location correctly in the terminal.
Cheers

Since the SFS is mounted, just open a terminal and enter
(assuming that's the correct location of the binary).
Alternately, you can probably have /usr/bin/ open in your file manager (Rox? I don't know if Slacko still uses Rox... ), press "~", and just enter "hurrican" (without the quotes, of course).

Liro, have you loaded the .sfs file or have you mounted it by simply clicking on it?
Because there's a big difference.
.sfs files have to be loaded to work properly - the easiest way is to right-click on a file and choose sfs_load option.
Mounting is usefull if you'd like to, for instance, convert such a file to a .pet or just see what files are inside.
And don't forget to install appropriate drivers for your graphics card, as 666philb has mentioned in the opening post.
@Makoto: Yes, Slacko 5.3.3 still uses Rox.
@666philb: Thanks for the game; I remember this one from C64 (Turrican).
HTH
Greetings!

Thanks SFR & Makoto. I didn't know about the sfs_load option until now. So I got the program to start, but although I can hear the music I just get an unmovable black X window, weird resolution, no key response and have to reboot... which is the same thing that happened when I tried to use the ZSNES emulator on Slacko (although it worked, albeit slowly, on Wary). It must be a graphics driver issue, but I couldn't be bothered looking into it now, so I'll save this game for some other time (looks good anyway ).

Try the terminal for both those programs. They might mention what the issue is.
Do you have SDL installed, by the way?

Failed to 640x480x16 video mode: X11 driver not configured with OpenGL
It kind of says it all and I had previously installed the SDL package.
After, I installed the Nvidia driver for my type of video card.
Also, I used SFS load on the fly to load the Hurrican SFS file.
So what am I missing here?

Last time I played this game, it was on Lucid, before I switched to Slacko...
I've got the same error now...
But I think I've found a workaround; here's what I've done:
1. Installed sdl-1.2.14 from slackware-13.37-official repo in PPM.
(direct link: http://slackware.cs.utah.edu/pub/slackware/slackware-13.37/slackware/l/sdl-1.2.14-i486-5.txz)
Thanks to that, the previous error message gone.
2. Installed Mesa drivers (+ restarted X server).
Still no joy...I ended up with Liro's "unmovable black window".
3. Reduced screen resolution from my native 1366x768 to 800x600 (lowest available).
Success! Game starts in fullscreen and is fully playable.
4. Then, for certainty, I installed ATI drivers for my card, reduced res. to 800x600...and "black window" again...
5. But then I reduced screen res. to the lowest available, which was 640x480 this time...and succeeded again!
Hope it'll work with Nvidia too...
Greetings!

I think it's a JWM bug with Slacko guys. Use icewm from the repo or compile the latest JWM. I'll upload a package soon...
OR
test out the latest Slacko beta, JWM bugfixed and includes full SDL and mesa. (see the projects forum )
edit:
NOPE! JWM can't handle it, use icewm
