Lxpup 14 final 7-20-2012

#1 Post by Jejy69 »

Hello,

Lxpup 14 is released. It's the final.

I removed the "current" repository of slackware, to avoid a disorder in libs. All packages have dependencies now, and gslapt is functionnal.
Pburn & Pmusic updated >= 4.0
zd1121 driver bug fixed.
http://sourceforge.net/projects/checkma ... o/download

I made another Iso, Lxpup "Badass edition", which uses the current tree of slackware. I compiled a fonctionnal Gnome 3.8.1 ( Shell works ).
It's just for fun, to see if latest gnome can works on Puppy. And it works :D

Why Gslapt ?
You can make your deposit,
Dependency management,
Packets can be upgraded/downgraded
Better compression,
More packages !
Add more repos
Installing from the command line like apt-get!

ISO : http://lxpup.weebly.com/lxpup

Cheers,
Jérôme

OK, this ISO is smaller than the Gnome one, so I'll try an 'astuce'. I'll use the UC browser on my phone, I'll save the ISO to my temporary-file-station at Udisk, and then download it to my SD card.

This is great fun. I hope you release a CheckMate for the upcoming Slacko 5.3.4 also, please. The LXDE desktop is snappy, clean, and fresh, and is under development and testing by many people in the Linux community. The Qtweb browser is also very snappy, no spell check though--but any other browser could be added--there are even bookmarks--and it might be all that many people need. Oddly, it did not automatically connect to my ethernet connection as Slacko 5.3.3 does. And oh yeah, I can't find Lxterminal.

Is this puppy based on Lucid or Slacko?

...Is there a .pet for Lilyterm? Because LXterminal doesn't do it for me.

Can't get wifi working on Checkmate.

I've tried Frisbee, Simple Network manager and Network manager.

Wifi always worked before on other puppies. :/

CheckMate v2 released !

@Gnuxo : based on Slacko 5.3.3
I look for Wifi, I think it is fixed in V2.

@ playdayz : Slacko 5.3.4 ? Of course! But I prefer to wait a beta version from 01Micko.
I try to solve the network problem, but I do not know what can cause this malfunction ... Lxsession maybe ?

Yes. I meant when slacko 5.3.4 is officially released.

Maybe so. I hope Checkmate attracts enough attention so that the connection gurus such as shinobar and rerwin will help ;-)

Here's a suggestion.

Since, in some cases the games don't matter and the puppy is called checkmate.

It would be nice if the only game included was a chess game. It would make sense.

I've always liked QTweb. It's nice.

I'll try out Version 2.

I managed to get wifi working on Checkmate by the way.

The issue was Frisbee. Frisbee was malfunctioning for some reason.
...And once you install Frisbee, it won't let you go back and use the simple network manager. I didn't do a save file so I rebooted and didn't install frisbee and the wifi worked.

I was actually expecting nm-applet. Thank you for not including it. Nm-applet is terrible with LXDE, it disconnects every second.

I prefer the default puppy network things.

...And I actually like Lilyterm better then LXterm because it has so many customization options compared to Lxterm. And is still very lightweight.

...So I really don't care if Lxterm isn't there because I'd have installed Lilyterm anyway.

Don't mean to spam the thread but there is a very strange glitch with v1 and bash.

Every terminal gives a strange syntax error. :?

@ playdayz : This will be done with Slacko 5.3.4.

@ Gnuxo : Good news! I'm glad the system works!
Indeed, Frisbee seems to work on any of my spin ...
Yes, good idea, do you know a chess game in Puppy?
In V2, lxterminal will be already present. :)

Ah? What kind of problem?
You mean characters that overlap?

No, when I open a terminal, *any terminal* I get a message like "error with bash syntax* or something.
I am not in Checkmate right now, and it started disconnecting for some reason so I went into a different puppy and the disconnecting stopped.

I really hope NMApplet isn't included in checkmate, I've had a bad history with it.

I don't know about many good chess games for puppy.
I know that GnuChess is available from the slacko repos and it's a fairly simple and lightweight program. I installed it in CheckMate without any extra dependencies.

There might be better Chess programs for linux but GnuChess seems like it would be a good default because of it's size.

Edit: Oh and before I forget, please remove meebo from the menu. It was bought by Google and is shutting down.

Bonjour petihar !

@ Gnuxo :
No, the network manager for LXDE is not here.

The distrib doesn't work ? You can't use it ?

I briefly checked how this distro looked like. Pup-volume-monitor really works with pcmanfm. I got idea for myself from that. Thanks.
Couple of observations when I hacked pcmanfm and pup-volume-monitor to work in an other puplet.

It might be good idea to disable pcmanfm trash. Otherwise the stuff will be stored somewhat obscure place.

CheckMate-v2.iso+puppy_slacko_5.3.3.sfs/root/.local/share/Trash/files ----> 28 Mb of stuff not needed in remastered version. :D

Another way to reduce the size is....pcmanfm can use /usr/local/apps/ROX-Filer/ROX/MIME location for .svg storage...if you just copy the needed .svg there....and create gtkrc.mine file pointing to the ROX.

The benefit....you wont need 20 Mb elementery icons....just 22x22 sized...needed icons only.
CheckMate-v2.iso+puppy_slacko_5.3.3.sfs/usr/share/icons/elementary folder can be removed or better....keep it in storage and stuff ROX/MIME with needed .svg ones.

The reduction...from total 20 Mb icon folder to about 400-500 k. Not bad.

So.....you can shave about 47 Mb out just by finetuning !

I attach my pcmanfm pet here so that you can check how I did it.
I did also modifyi the conf files so that they basically worked for me. I didnt much checked yours...so probably you had the basics done also.

The important url`s in the pet are:
/usr/local/apps/ROX-Filer/ROX/MIME
/root/.gtkrc.mine
conf files in /root/.config/libfm and pcmanfm folders
and the same conf files in their default places....I just have them preinstalled in /root also.
There is other stuff in pet which is useful in dpup exprimo...forget them and the binary and libs...they are for debian squeeze...not useful.

PS. wireless connection worked without problem all the time I tested the distro....about one hour.
I used pns-tool-wrapper ie pns_tool, the terminal manager.

Darn. LXDE probably needs those .svg files also. I didnt thought of that when I had been focused to the pcmanfm only. If it so...then you need larger .svg base to satisfy LXDE desktop. I didnt thought of that because LXDE is not familiar for me. I use JWM and e17 mostly. And before that icewm and openbox with fbpanel so...I am sorry of the confusion if LXDE needs .svg icons.
