Thunderbird 10 sfs for Racy

#16 Post by ETP »

Henry,
Thanks for the sfs link but I note that it relates to Racy 5.2.2 rather than
Racy 5.3 which Sylvander is using and EarlyBird 10.0.2 which is very old.
I feel that Sylvander would be better off with a manual install of TB 14 which
I have already tried & tested by upgrading from 13.01 (very simple-just click
on help then about in T'bird)

It is of course for Sylvander to decide.
Thanks once again.
Regards ETP

ETP,

Thanks for explaining. Of course you are right. I tend not to think much about the age of Thunderbird. I only picked this when I moved to Racy a few weeks ago, having used Thunderbird 2 very satisfactorily for the last many years. All else being equal I suppose newer is better.

My thanks to you for your good ideas/advice/assistance.
And to all contributors.
ASAP, I'll read through the thread again from the beginning, and try to deal with all the points made.

Yes - it is as simple a procedure as I descibed in my write up above.
Will do ASAP.

Suddenly my Thunderbird has stopped fetching emails.
Doesn't do it automatically or manually.
Haven't made any changes.
pop3 and smtp server settings look OK.

Anyone know how to fix?

Hi Sylvander,

If your restore from a recent backup didn't/doesn't work, contact your ISP and, as a last resort in true Scots' style, pay their bill.

My regards

Seemed like a good idea...
So I restored a backup of my slackosave, made 12th Aug [2 days back], when Thunderbird was fully-functional.
This backup was made after the successful Thunderbird change explained in the post on 21st July.
But the restore failed to produce a fix.
I assume the problem is included in my Thunderbird profile that resides in /mnt/home/Mail [on the sda5 partition].
I suppose it therefore matters not which installation of Thunderbird is used.
If it works with that [now faulty?] profile, the problem will still be seen, until fixed.

By [accept-it-or-no-deal] agreement...
My ISP [Virgin] reaches into my bank account each month and TAKE what they think they are due.
So my bill is ALWAYS paid.
And [unlimited?] technical assistance is included in the price.
But they DON'T work with Linux, only Windows.
So no help to be had there I expect.

3. Phoned the Virgin Tech Assistance.
He was beginning to help despite being told I was using Thunderbird within Puppy Linux.
But...
After he got me to download Support-LogMeinRescue.exe and run it using winefile...
And it failed to connect...
He told me he could send me to another number where they would charge for giving assistance.
How much would they charge I wonder?
Anyway, I told him to forget it.
He said they don't support Teamviewer, which I have installed and working.

Hi Sylvander,

My suggestions are:

If Thunderbird is not set to leave incoming emails on your ISP then amend your preferences so that they are retained, at least temporarily.

Start again from scratch and this time back up mnt/home as well as your save file and repeat the setting in the paragraph above.

Keep all existing "intermediate email" backups for both you and your wife (including the 12th August) until all is resolved.

My regards

PS Can you still send emails (e.g. to your wife)?

1. "If Thunderbird is not set to leave incoming emails on your ISP then amend your preferences so that they are retained, at least temporarily."
Why?
(a) For the time being, I can go back to using "SaveMyModem" [smm] to read, and delete, emails on the pop3 server.
Any I don't delete using smm will be left sitting on the server.
(b) Do you suggest this in case Thunderbird auto-downloads emails and then loses them?

2. "Start again from scratch and this time back up mnt/home as well as your save file and repeat the setting in the paragraph above."
How should I preserve the important emails presently stored in my Thunderbird profile?

3. "Keep all existing "intermediate email" backups for both you and your wife (including the 12th August) until all is resolved. "
I don't understand the meaning of this.
What is "intermediate email"?
What & where are the backups of these that you mention?
You say: "Keep all existing"; do they exist?

4. "Can you still send emails (e.g. to your wife)?"
1st attempt:
My identity was able to send...
My wife's identity was able to fetch->[what my identity had sent] and send->[to my identity].
But my identity was unable to fetch what my wife's identity had sent.
I'm able to see forwarded emails sitting on the server by using smm.

5. 2nd attempt:
(a) I was able to forward an email from my identity to my wife's identity.
I see it sitting on the server by using smm, but my wifes identity fails to fetch it.
(b) I was able to forward an email from my wife's identity to mine.
I see it sitting on the server by using smm, but my identity fails to fetch it.
Hence...
(c) Each identity can send, but not fetch.

Hi Sylvander,

I could explain the significance and meaning of points (1) to (3), but it would seem better and more fruitful to explore (4) and (5) for now. Your ISP free helpline is surely worth another call.

If you get no useful help there, then I suggest you delete "solved" or raise a new query on this forum.

My regards

ETP wrote:It may be a wise idea to have one pup that does not share a profile with the others. If that also became problematic it would prove that the problem was at the SP end.
(a) Sounds good. :D

(b) So far I've tried looking at a couple of other Puppies I have in use.
Can't remember which at this point.
(c) One had Thunderbird installed and using the moved Profile.
It was displaying the same problem [no surprise there].
(d) In the other Puppy, I installed Thunderbird, BUT...
When I tried to setup new accounts, it was reporting a failure to connect to the pop3 server due to the use of an incorrect password.
Now, I have in a written list, all the info necessary to connect and make use of the email pop3 and smtp servers.
I regularly specify that info when setting up smm, without any problems.
When I originally setup Thunderbird, those details worked 1st time with no problems.

(c) What to do now?
Is it a problem with the pop3 server?
I notice Thunderbird was attempting to use different "Google Mail" servers.
I specified my usual:
pop3.blueyonder.co.ukj
smtp.blueyonder.co.uk

Hi Sylvander,

The problem seems to be with VM.

1. You are correct. :D
I changed "SSL" to "None" in "Account Settings->Server Settings->Security Settings->Connection Security"...
And saved the settings, and attempted to fetch the emails that smm showed were waiting for collection...
And they fetched just fine! 8)

2. Do you think I should I change the setting back to "SSL" at some pont when there are more emails waiting to be fetched?
Do you understand what this SSL is about?
If you do, could you explain it?

EMAIL PROBLEM

#30 Post by ETP »

Hi Sylvander,

VM have probably messed up intended changes. They may fix them or regress.
Stick with your current working settings for now but make a point of sending
yourself an email each day to check that you can send & receive.

If one day it fails revert to your original settings.
With regard to "SSL" see link (in particular final paragraph).

http://www.techterms.com/definition/ssl

Good to hear that its working again. :)

I phoned them, and was told they were changing over from...
blueyonder.co.uk
to...
virginmedia.co.uk
And that probably accounts for the SSL problem.

He didn't offer any advice on what I should do now.
I was phoning to give them the info on this.
Seems their help line is VERY busy.
Took 15-min to get through.

My thanks to you for your assistance. :D
By-the-way...
What are "thanks"?
Good thoughts/thinks/thanks?
