Mac Emulator - Basilisk II

#1 Post by don570 »

I was successful in getting Basilisk II to work properly in
Puppy Linux (Exprimo) and Porteus

Using Fullwrite and the Maclinkplus 9.0 file translators I was able
save files in a wide variety of formats such as Word.

Maclinkplus 11

Fullwrite is full featured and quick and freeware.
Your Serial Number is FREE-33333-33333
http://www.encyclomedia.ca/fwp/

Microsoft Word 6 is reputed to work in Basilisk
http://macintoshgarden.org/apps/microsoft-word-6

Image

This is a great way to run that old mac software you have
hidden in your drawer. Also there's lots of freeware software
available. I reccommend going to Mac garden

Here's a package to get you started. I'll explain how to use it in
the second post.

instructions for installation- basilisk

#2 Post by don570 »

Installation instructions:

You will need to buy an Apple OS 8 CD disk ( under $10 )

An image can be created in the Basilisk front window (about 200megs
is recommended [100megs minimum is required for install]) or you can make your own image from a blank.

Warning!! Your hard drive needs to have enough space for the
creation of an image file. For example if you are creating a 400mb image
then you need at least 400mb of space free in your hard drive to hold it.
You can check if the image has been properly made to the right size
by right-clicking and looking under 'Properties'

If you wish to create an image using Basilisk itself, hopefully this
screenshot will help you. Notice that the folder is selected, then
the name of the image is typed in field. Choose the size as well
(400 mb in this example).
If you click 'Create' to create your image, then it is listed in Basilisk's front window automatically after creation.

Image

Blank images are available here. and in my archive.
For Basilisk to know the blank images location
you must click on 'Add' to find the location .
I've used the 224mb blank image in this screenshot.

Image

Read about images here

Inside the archive you will find a recent version of
Basilisk II (zipped) . You must unzip the various files.

The XZM module is for the Porteus distribution. Puppy users should just
ignore that module.

You will also need the Performa ROM which is in
the other compressed file. Unzip .

Store both in a folder . Run Basilisk II by clicking on it.
(or some puppies may need a link put in executable path like /usr/bin/)

And set the options as shown.

Image

Note that you need to give the path to the ROM

The other settings are simple.

In Graphic/sound I would suggest that you keep the sound 'OFF'
and the refresh rate at 30hz. You can set the window size.

I would suggest 800x600 pixels.

Make sure an image is listed in front window. See image above
where I have unzipped a 224mb image from my blanks file.
Put your OS8 disk in the tray and click 'START"

If everything is correct your OS 8 CD will launch like
on a real MAC!!

Image

It's a simple process to install an image
(which can be named anything). After installation choose 'SHUTDOWN'
and run Basilisk II again. The disk image must be chosen
as well as the path to the ROM in the front window. The launch only
takes a few seconds!!

Two applications you MUST install next is Apple's Disk Copy 6.32
and (un)Stuffit 5.5. This will allow you access to a large amount of software.

You can also upgrade to OS 8.1 (for free) from Apple_Support_Area

will basilisk run os 9.2.1?

#5 Post by mmmrr »

hi don,

thanks for the heads-up re basilisk ll.
i have an os 9.2.1 cd which i kept because
i liked it so well; do you know if it would it run
on basilisk? i guess i could just try it.

i'm just feeling my way on this port puppy to
powerpc. do you know of any limiting factors:
such as memory and/or cpu power that might
make using basilisk ll as a sandbox for testing
a puppy port a poor idea.

ie. a compu with 1.5 GHZ cpu and 1.5 GB ram running
puppy, running basilisk ll on which is running an older, smaller,
simpler puppy ported to the powerpc architecture

the puppy that i have in mind for a trial port is puppy 202 opera,
a 58 mb puplet by john murga with only xvesa, no xorg.

i don't mean to hijack this thread, just to ask if you think
basilisk might be useful/possible in this way.

cheers, mm

hi don,

i put basilisk2 and performa rom into a folder
together but bash kept declining . i thought it
might be a permissions issue and made both
files executable but it made no difference.

you said 'Run Basilisk II'. please tell me what
you entered at the prompt. i also tried 'run' which
was unrecognised then exec which was recognised
but still basilisk2 and variations, including full name,
were not.

cheers, mm

basilisk no run problem solved

#7 Post by mmmrr »

hi don,

i was looking at properties for basilisk2
including the fine print looking for a clue
to my problem...
'for GNU/Linux 2.6.4'
was the clue. i'd been trying in an older kernel,
--pup412retro, k 2.6.2--. i rebooted into wary53,
--k 2.6.32.59 [according to hardinfo]--
i clicked on basilisk2, which i'd put on a separate partition, and bingo, i was looking at the display from the next step in yr tutorial. whee! next!

cheers, mm

mackintoshgarden links not so good these days

#8 Post by mmmrr »

macgardens links for os 8 and related things pointed to mediafire where they dead-ended with the horrid words 'account suspended'. there is another useful archive site called winworldpc-dot-com with lots of different operating system and app files including mac os 8. mirrors in france and chicago.

currently active forums, called winboards, where i found a suggestion, given to someone without a cd-drive who wanted to add stuffit from an iso file:

http://winworldpc.com/winboards/viewtopic.php?p=123725
Post subject: Re: How do I use ISO files in Basilisk II build 142?
most recent post: july 1, 2012:

'Most people just think Basilisk II has zero support for ISO files because there are no options for emulating an .iso as the CD-ROM in the Basilisk II GUI, but it is possible - just directly open "BasiliskII_prefs" with SimpleText and add the line "cdrom StuffIt Deluxe 4.5.iso" above the first line.'

that caught my eye--issues with cd's/cd-drives were/are my current stumbling block to getting
basilisk2 going, presently it starts then gives me a floppy disk icon with a flashing '?'.

i haven't found basiliskll_prefs. i'm going through
the checklist re cd-rw, burning tools, etc.

hi don,
it would be a big help if you gave a screenshot of the
front window of yr basilisk2 settings.
i think i've got an okay os8 iso on cd --size is right--but no md5sums at winworldpc. basilisk fires up then spits out the cd with a flashing '?' on floppy icon. i've tried everything i could think of except hitting it with a hammer, maybe you know the feeling...

if i knew in more detail what you meant:

'Make sure an image is listed in front window.'

a blank image of 224mb? an image of the os8 iso?
[which is about 320mb, so i used 448 mb when i
tried the create tab then directed to the iso for the image]

'Put your OS8 disk in the tray, make sure it
is listed also in the front window'

how is the os8 disk to be listed?

thanks for getting me started on what still seems like a worthwhile project. i realise that there must be a basilisk2 forum and i'll be finding it. i realise that lots goes on in peoples' lives.

cheers, mm

Sorry I missed your post.

I tried OS 9.2.1 as well and it didn't work. Fortunately I had the
old version OS 8 still available. An added bonus of the
original OS 8 disk is that Movieplayer is installed as well.

This is the original version of Quicktime Pro. It is
is very useful in editing sound files.

I should have put in picture of first Basilisk window.

Basilisk instructions page

Apparently the OS 8 disk is inserted after launching Basilisk emulator.
But I'll check again.

You use the 'Add' file selector to select images ( .dsk ) that will mount
at the same time as OS 8 or you can create your own images
by clicking 'Create' button.

I wrote a pet package to create HFS images from a folder of files.
So this is the easiest way to transfer files to mac emulator.

I am using an official OS 8 disk , but I have made images of
OS 9 disks using the commercial mac application 'Toast'
and then burnt it to a CD again and it worked fine.

A lot of images are available on the internet for downloading
but they are often in an image format that only a recent
copy of Toast will understand and burn correctly.
If you try to burn them with Puppy linux , then only the
'file' is being burnt rather than the image.

If you don't have a copy of Toast then look for images that are
.dmg or .img which are the regular Apple images that
can be burnt by Apple software .

An official copy of OS8 should only cost $10 on ebay.

I click on the Basilisk icon which launches the app.
(?? Did I first undeb the debian package)
(I must have a distribution that allows clicking on application icons)

To start the emulation -----> click on 'Start' button at
bottom of opening window of Basilisk , but only after
carefully going through the setup of options as I mentioned
in my instruction list.

I read in the Basilisk manual that OS 8 install disk
must be a real physical disk , not an image

The reason why you need have an empty image (of at least 224mb)
is because this is acting as your mac computer hard drive.
In other words it will contain your system and data files like a real mac
computer so it needs a file system format like a mac.
This format is called HFS.

Linux uses other file system formats such as EXT2 EXT3 etc.

'thanks, i'll have a chance to try making use of them
in the next 12 hours.'

you said: I should have put in picture of first Basilisk window. any chance of you posting that. it would be a big help because i can tell already that yr answers
are reducing but not eliminating my uncertainties.

thanks again, gotta go, cheers, mm

I've done a reinstall to check on the procedure again.

I didn't explain some things properly.

There are two methods to create an image file

1) Blanks
2) Basilisk 'Create' button

I've rewritten this with more info to help user.

_____________________________________________

You need an official Apple OS 8 CD or a burnt copy of same.
I use an old copy of Toast4 so I don't know about other burn programs.

The OS 8 CD isn't listed on the image's list. Instead Basilisk
does a search of the CD tray when the 'Start' button is clicked.
_________________________________

If you try to run OS 9.2.1 you will see a question mark popup on screen.

______________________________________________________

Be sure your hard drive has enough free space to hold the image
and do a check of its size after you create the image file.
Basilisk needs to know the paths to image file and to ROM file. Be sure
that these are correct.

Good luck . It's not that hard once you get your hands on an
official OS 8 CD.

hi don

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dd_(Unix)

has a brief clear text on 'dd' with useful examples of code, ie: what to put at the prompt .

the first of the examples below will do the job
and if 'os-8-mm.iso' is used in place of 'myCD.iso' then it'll be easy to spot in a list, we'll know what it is, [os8], we'll be able to track its behaviour/history over the few days/operations.

i was able to get some checksums from the os8iso
i have:

F23857AAD354406C8CA4D938FFFAE9DB===MD5 hash

653E723FB18934718FE5D853BCC00812BFACA669==SHA1 hash

8FF30E7B===CRC-32

only one match is required.

please see if can checksum the iso you know will work. at prompt, enter: 'md5sum' then one space, then the name of the isofile as it appears in a folder[directory]. on the key beneath the escape key, upper left corner of keyboard, the '~' and '`'
key is usually found. ~ uppercase, ` lowercase

` that keystroke opens a console, [ie a prompt window or a terminal window] in the active folder,
usually the one most recently opened. mouseclick in the blank part of the folder where the iso file is, to make it live, then click the ` key

terminal opens, enter at prompt:

md5sum=one space= [name file as shown in directory/folder].iso --press enter--

save the resulting mix of letters, numbers, please
and send it to me so that i can check that the sum
i get after recieving the transfer, whether it's by
cd or by etheric, ie you upload it to a suitable spot
from which i download it, checksum, try again if needed. let you know if the transfer was good so
you can remove, if you wish, the file from yr online transfer account. sound do able?

many thanks, cheers, mm
=======================
Data transfer forms of dd: first:

dd if=/dev/sr0 of=myCD.iso bs=2048 conv=noerror,sync

which creates an ISO disk image from a CD-ROM.

...........................................: second:

dd if=/dev/sda2 of=/dev/sdb2 bs=4096 conv=noerror

which clones one partition to another

.............................................: third:

dd if=/dev/ad0 of=/dev/ad1 bs=1M conv=noerror

whichs clones a hard disk "ad0" to hard disk "ad1".

'bs' refers block sizes

The noerror option means to keep going if there is an error. The sync option means to pad the output blocks.

hi don,
between sudden demands from the health side
and sudden demands on other sides i've had only
two brief looks at the compu [email] in the last 24
hours. it's probably going to be another 24 hrs
until i get a chance to go over and act on what you say about the basilisk front window, could you post a picture of yours, please.

is the 'dd' working for you?

I explain how I made an OS8 install disk image and then split it
into chunks to store it on a free data storage site.

I used Barry Kauler's 'Pudd' then used RSH's 'rightclick_split-1.4'
It's surprisingly simple and quick to do using Puppy Linux.
