Virtual disc (CD) program that runs in Wine? [solved] |
|
Basically I would like to run Rebirth in Wine, and it needs a virtual CD to run the .iso properly. I have tried MagicDisc and also UltraISO, both Windows programs which work when running Rebirth in Windows on certain computers, but they don't seem to work under Wine.
Also, please do not recommend Reborn unless you have made mods to it that allow the use of USB MIDI controllers.

I don't understand why you would want to run a Windows Virtual CD program.
Don't you just need to mount the .iso somewhere and use the "drives" tab of winecfg to set the mount point up as a CD drive?
I suppose in an extreme case you might need to use cdemu, but I wouldn't have thought it would be common.

Thanks, but can you point me to a resource which would explain how to do this?
I tried but couldn't figure it out. No problem making a new virtual drive, but I can't figure out what to do after, for example how to insert the .iso in the drive.

O.k., never mind about the mount point, I figured it out and it was really easy to do, but it doesn't work properly, i.e. doesn't see the drive as the one it's supposed to go to after the program is installed.

Can't you rename the drive to match whatever drive it is trying to use?

What do you mean? I can use any letter from a: to z: I think. I tried setting it as a "cdrom" and also as "autodetect", but it didn't seem to work either way. (edit: actually I finally got what you meant, since I still have Windows installed I'll check what drive the CD is)

I thought when you tried to run the program it might say in an error message which drive it was looking at.

I took a break from trying to get this to work, but I'm still interested.
This is what I get when I run the program (see picture below), either by GUI or console. Console doesn't write anything in the console after running the program, just posts the same thing graphically as below (no error message).
Also, I tried setting up a virtual drive as both d: (windows default) and f: (the one I had been using in Windows with a virtual CD program). Neither work, neither with setting the drive as cd or autodetect and mounting it at where the .iso file is on the actual hard drive.

This is just a wild shot.
But have you tried installing VirtualBox or VmWare with Windows and running rebirth from windows in it?
I know that VirtualBox allows use of virtual cd/dvd's.

ok
1. click on the iso to mount it (in puppy)
2. run winecfg
3. click the 'drives' tab & press 'auto detect'
4 then the 'browse' button and navigate to /mnt/ and click on the rebirth iso folder to highlite it, and press ok
5 then click the 'show advanced' button and make the 'type' CD-ROM
6 press apply
it should work then... if it doesn't , try adding a drive and go through 4-6 again
edited... added about auto detect and adding a drive

O.k., thanks, it works now.
The problem is I wasn't mounting the .iso before starting, and instead of using /mnt/ to find the .iso I was simply finding it in the file system.
It also seems I now have to mount the .iso every time I boot into Puppy before starting ReBirth if I want to use it. With Windows and a virtual CD program it did it automatically, no big deal though.
