Having problems configuring Samba sharing

#1 Post by bugman-2.0 »

This thread is not working at all for me. Error 67 in Windows every time. Looking at Windows help pages for net use confuse me even further; their usage examples are nothing like what is shown here. Any help would be appreciated as I know less than nothing about networking.

[edit] Using "net use" alone shows nothing out there. Even though there is.

The easiest way to access a Linux Samba server from Windows is to create a shortcut on the desktop.

1. Use right-click > New > Shortcut

2. Make the location "\\name_of_server". Note that the location starts with two backslashes.

3. Double-click the new shortcut.

But Windows can't see any networked machines. There's nothing to link TO.

Then you don't have a Linux server running, or you have a firewall that is blocking it. Or you haven't enabled Windows File and Print sharing.

What Puppy are you using? What Samba package are you using?

Puppy is Slacko 5.3.3

Samba is 3.6.4 and runs on boot.

Firewall on Puppy is off.

Windows is probably the issue.

Which version of Windows is this?

Do you have another Linux machine on your network to confirm that the server is running?
Windows is probably the issue.
What firewalls are running on the Windows machine?

Have you enabled Windows File and Print Sharing? Pick a folder, right-click on it and go through the Sharing procedure. Then check from your Puppy machine that it is visible.

Bailed on networking. Not worth the bother.

"Not worth the bother" has always been my Linux mantra.

make sure the Windows machine has netbios disabled, so that it is using smb for sharing.

the settings are under the network interface somewhere.

tcp/ip -> advanced something like that, you'll find it.
