Why is the video playback on Slacko 5.3.3 non existent |
|
Well, I guess Gnome player will play avi's. Why release an operating system that won't play all video formats. WinXP has been able to do that for what, over a decade now?

Hm? Even XP won't play all video container formats out-of-the-box. You'll still likely have to install a splitter and codecs, or a player with its own self-contained codecs/etc, like VLC.
You should be able to install VLC or mplayer, to have better support for playing videos other than AVIs.

For someone who *never* offers constructive feedback- you've got quite the nerve complaining!

I guess I don't offer constructive feedback because I find PL and all it's derivatives (yes, I've tried them all) to be really flawed. For the most part it's slower and clunkier than WinXP on a old P2 machine.

If I remember right....WinXP played almost nothing oob. I couldnt get avi files, mp4 files, xvid compressed avi, divx compressed avi to play with windows media player. I had to download VLC media player to get them working. What kind of WinXP nowadays supports natively all those different kind of formats oob ?
If we are really talking about support for those different kind of formats...yes it is possible to upgrade - install other multimedia backends and frontends to the Puppy Linux also and get support to the file formats you need. You dont have to settle for to those applications which comes with base distro. Mplayer, Mplayer2, VLC, Xine can be compiled with different kind of file format supports. Matroska seems to be most trickiest. I had to apply debian patch to get matroska support working for VLC. It is not always easy to satisfy all the format needs, but many Puppy users and developers give help.

Hmm....could you list what consists of all video formats. I would like to know how many of them you know and how you define all
You could also list how many of those all video formats WinXP supports after you have installed the OS. Without downloading any other applications. Because we are speaking now what video formats released OS supports.
The most important thing is that you have working OS for your old Pentium. You should be happy with that. Free lunch does not always fit to everyone. People here do their best. Be sure of that.
EDIT. Woof mime coupling for matroska has been defective. I have fixed it in dpup exprimo and 01micko noticed the same thing. Matroska formats were played through the gnome-mplayer and searching the file but not by clicking the file. It was good pick and it needed fixing. Thank you for informing that.

Wary 5.3 plays Matroska files by just clicking the file.

I never got windows to play any codecs out of the box. It only plays wma and wmv. I always had to download k-lite codecs to be able to watch other formats. Puppy linux is very quick for on my machine. It plays all formats and well as mp3's. It can be made portable to be used on other machines and I don't have to worry about accidentally deleting system files. Just insert CD, copy the files to hard disk, restart, and your system is restored. Where as, in windows, you would have to reinstall windows. So flawed, I think not.
