PuppyKennels FRAPPR page - ADD YOURSELF!

#1 Post by kcin »

Hi,

Earlier this morning someone else posted a link in the Beginner Forum about the new PuppyKennels page on FRAPPR...

http://www.frappr.com/puppykennels

(What does Frappr stand for?
Frappr = Friend Mapper)

It shows the location on a world map of all Puppy Users who Add Themselves to the site.

I thought this was really cool, and a great way to promote Puppy and the Puppy User Community - You can even post your picture or logo, and a short message , or "ShoutOut.".

So I thought a post here in Announcements might be a good idea.

We have almost 1000 registered users on this forum & so far only 20 are on the FRAPPR Map.

I wanted to encourage everyone to go check it out and Add Yourself - It'd be really cool to see the whole Puppy community represented on the World Map

http://www.frappr.com/puppykennels

(Moderator - Maybe make this sticky for a while?)

Best regards,

kcin

Barry, your link at http://www.pupweb.org/ leads to http://www.pupweb.org/ , not to the map.

You are HERE is correct though (HERE, not at the MAP-Site) ;)

I seem to have included a picture of myself as a Puppy component

. . . actually it is quite a good likeness . . . 8)

Isn't this the second frapper map - or am I hallucinating again?

WHO is the FRAPPR Map Administrator?

#8 Post by kcin »

Would the the FRAPPR Map Administrator/Originator(s) be willing to step forward and identify who they are?

(There have been a couple of Picture and Shoutout upload errors that need fixing).... (most notably, my own error )

BTW Congrats on a great idea of starting that Puppy Map!

Best Regards,

kcin

very nice...cool to see where everyone is located. Looks like we are close enough in some places to start a PUG (Puppy Users Group) ;-)

PUPPY FRAPPR Representation DOUBLES in One Week!

#11 Post by kcin »

On November 1st when this thread first started, there were 20 Puppies on the FRAPPR Map

This morning, November 7th, the last day of the first week since this thread started, there were 45 Puppies on the map, meaning... we more than DOUBLED our representation so far this week.

GOOD GOING PUPS!

In addition to the new postings, some Pups who were already on the map posted Pictures of themselves, their own real Pups (or in one case, goats), screenshots, or other graphics, making the map much more interesting, colorful, and complete.

BTW, if anyone wants to change their uploaded graphic, you can do so by just uploading a new one - it will automatically replace the previous one on the map "ShoutOut" popup bubble.

We're still a long ways from equaling our Forum membership number though (which now stands at 959), but it's a very good start.

At this rate we'll be close to fully represented on the map by ... uhhh... DOH! .... next Haloween ... that is, unless we have a huge surge of Puppy Spirit and have a significant increase in the rate that Pups are Adding Themselves to the map.

If you see this post, and aren't on the map yet, why not go add yourself now? It takes only a couple of minutes.

http://www.frappr.com/puppykennels

If your city, town, village, burg, or wide spot in the road is not yet included in FRAPPR's list, don't despair, just pick the closest place to you that IS in FRAPPR's list, and then mention your real town in the "ShoutOut," if you like.

If you don't have a photo to post, no sweat, you can go back and add a photo whenever you do have one. And you can still say whatever you want to in the "ShoutOut."

Show your support for Puppy - Get on the Map!

Best Regards,

kcin

Hey, not all the markers appear on the map.

I'm on the list but my marker does not show. It's difficult to actually see the geograhic spread without the proper markers.

Is it me or a bug in the site?

Hi Rarsa,

You're there!

Try zooming in on the map using the controls on the upper left - you may have to pan left a hair...

...or even easier, just find your name on the list to the right of the map and click on your name there to auto-locate and activate your "ShoutOut." Then you can pan-to and zoom-in on your marker very easily.

I set the default zoom so that it would show most of the world, to show the global spread of Pups on first hitting the site...

Do you think it would be better to use a closer zoom on the majority of Pups in the US and Canada as a default instead?

If so, I can do that easily in a minute or you can do it too, just log on as site admin (passwd puppy).

Best Regards,

kcin

Before My post I zoomed in, I panned, I clicked my name, all to no avail.

The orange marker did not show. Neither the markers for the people in Germany.

I'm jsut noticing that It is with Opera that some markers don't show.

As for the scale: I think that showing the whole world as the first screen is great. I would not change it.

...update

Due to the Extreme Default Zoom I had originally set (to show the whole Puppy Community Worldwide), I inadvertantly created a situation where many of the markers in the US and Canada were obscured by other markers, making it difficult for users to locate their markers without adjusting the zoom.

I have now reset the default zoom to 10 (the National level) and centered the map around Topeka, Kansas (After some frantic zipcode testing and zoom manipulation, this zoom and centering seemed to show the most Pups with the least overlap of markers)

Apologies to Pups in Asia, Australia, Europe, Africa, Nova Scotia, and South America, but you will either have to pan & zoom to your markers or use the user list to jump to your markers.

This is to accomodate the current majority of Pups in Continental US and Canada.

Feedback welcome...

Best Regards

kcin

I am there too. Added a custom map to my Myspace. Interesting concept. You can go through the list on the left and highlight anyone to center the map on them. I would love to see the maps so covered with markers you had to zoom out to see anything. I personally know 7 puppy users who are not on the map.
Puppy Linux...
It just works!
