MATE 1.8.1 - desktop manager

#1 Post by Jejy69 »

Hi, it's been a long time.
I achieved what I wanted to do, and a friend gave me the urge to touch the console.

I made these SFS, of my favourite desktop manager. MATE 1.8.1. This is the latest version, and it's available for Upup Precise, and Slacko for now.

It should work directly, but I had to recompile Glib 2.32 for Precise ( for GVFS, and Pup-volume-monitor). I created an "installer" but, I'm really bad in programmation... I would like to make a better script, but I really don't know how to do this.

MATE applications are not present, I think they're not really useful, but there is MATE terminal.

To download/try : http://puppy-mate.weebly.com/

Cheers !

Nice to see you posting again, jejy69 -- particularly since I didn't think I would.

How have you been?

Working for me as well. I will post a screenshot in the "My Puppy is more gorgeous..." thread shortly, and edit this post with a link to there.

One small bug I have noticed, is that mounted drives show up twice -- that is, the icon appears twice, one below the other. That's a little odd.

Also... pardon me for having gotten used to XFCE until this was posted... in X-Slacko 1.x, there is an additional feature in the context menu (right-click menu) when one is selecting a file, that permits the file to be opened with any of a number of common applications, as well as a feature that appears at all times, with common tasks (Extract to Folder, Extract Here, Open Terminal Here, etc). I would *love* to see those two features appear in a later revision of this MATE SFS.

However, the joy of using GNOME2 --or, rather, "GNOME2 by any other name", lol-- is a wonderful experience for me.

Hello,

Thanks you all ! It's been a while !

@Starhawk : nice bug ! I think it's because of my "rotten" script! pup-volume-monitor is started twice. Odd indeed !
You're forgiven  , I will add these recommendations very soon, it will be fast, the longer will be to the SFS online.

Hello, jejy69 and all.

There is a problem with loading the sfs in /root, since one must have
a large pupsave file already -- at least the size of the maté sfs free, i.e.
107 Mgs...

Got caught the first time and I had to enlarge my pupsave file to 300 Mgs,
then reboot. Erase the previous install with PPM, re-install, move the sfs
to /mnt/home manually, register it with the sfs-load, reboot the wm as
mate-session. Then it worked. But phew, lots of work... In an old Puppy
Precise 5.4.3, too.

Jerome, would it be very complicated to make the sfs load at /mnt/home?
That would save people some grief...

Also, I sincerely hate caja as a file manager. Is there a way to make ROX-
Filer the maté file manager by default instead of caja. I'm much more
productive with ROX : caja is missing some facilitating features that the
ROX-Filer has.

As you can guess, I won't be using this maté. I can appreciate jejy69's
work, but for me, the combination pekwm / ROX remains the #1 desktop
environment.

Bye for now.

TBH, I can't *stand* ROX-Filer. LOL. Three things that bother me endlessly when using ROX-Filer -- one, CTRL+X should be "cut" not "delete"; DEL should be "delete" -- two, left-click-and-drag to do move/copy, select which one you want from a list; that's not proper behavior, either -- and three, single click to open/run, rather than single-click select / double-click open/run... please, I'm not on a Mac, and I have several good reasons for that!

jejy69 -- if you would like to make a version *with* ROX-Filer, please also make a version keeping Caja... IMO, there's no real substitute for a "good" file manager -- and those three quirks alone are enough, in my book, to keep ROX-Filer off of that list.

Hmm. I don't like JWM and I don't like ROX-Filer. I must not be a very good Puppian, then  :P

Hi, starhwak.

I'm half a Puppian heretic, then, by your standard!

The Mate sfs for Slacko works on LxPup14.3.1 if directly loaded with no install pet - just drop out to console and type

xwin mate-session

after loading.

Hi,

@peebee : Thanks for your report, I know it works directly on Slacko, but if I made a pet package, it's to provide informations to start it, to replace some important file, launch scripts, and maintain consistency with Precise version, which needs a package for same reasons and replace Glib.

@Musher0 : Thanks for test, I totally agree that the script is not good. I have no programming knowledge. Thank you for taking the time to try. However it will be out of the question to replace Caja with ROX. Simply, because it's MATE and not a soup of MATE-rox-openbox-thunar. I hate the mess  .

@Starhawk : No, I won't make another version, MATE & only MATE with its components :) . Me too, I don't want JWM & Rox.

I'm VERY happy with this, aside from Eye of Mate being missing and having the same picture on all the desktops. It's so easy to change the desktop pic that it's no real biggie. I DO miss EOM. Geeqie is just insufficient. I love MatePup :) I like Caja MUCH BETTER. Vast improvement. Had NO PROBLEM getting it up and running. I was a bit surprised haha. Total newb to linux that I am.
THANKS Jejy69 !!! and your return to the boards I find exciting, to think what else might happen for MatePup.

Hi Jejy69,

It sure is nice to have you back here :D :D

This works nice on Manna OS 3.4 which is built with precise. however I can't seem to mount any of my other partitions. Is there something that I am not doing?

AKA oldyeller.

Cheers

Using Mate 1.8.1 as an alternative to JWM

#16 Post by FeodorF »

Wow! Thank you very much for this!

Mate 1.8.1 works much faster then JWM. I have it running on my box and it works very well. I'm running Open Office 4.1.0 on it as a Wine 1.7.20 Application. No faults detected so far. There is one problem about printing, but you can get around it.

Operating System: Precise Puppy 5.7.1
CPU: AMD Athlon XP 3000+
RAM: 1 GB
Motherboard: SiS K7S41GX

If you like to print, you'll have to download forum member rcrsn51's
'peasypdf-3.1.pet' -> http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... h&id=77991

What's all about can be read right here: -> http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=70680

jejy69, would you be so kind as to remind me how to change the screen-blanking interval? I'm using your SFS with Slacko 57. Quite honestly, if I could just turn that feature off I'd be happy -- I'm using an LCD monitor, which doesn't suffer from the issue that screensavers were invented to solve (etching of the glass of a CRT monitor, caused by the electron beam within drawing the same image(s), or a portion thereof, over and over and over for weeks or even months).

Hello !

28/06 : New SFS, I added some right clicks options ( "Open terminal here", "Extract"... ), Engrampa ( File-Roller like ), Pluma ( Gedit like ).

@FeodorF : Thanks for your test ! Delighted that it is useful.

@starhawk : Of course, I will add mate-screensaver, to avoid these problems.

@josejp2424 : Good luck for your puplet ! Can I add Shutdown_tray to the next release please ?

Have a nice day !
