Beginner question. Is there a way to use puppy linux from usb drive, without using cd/dvd, because my cd drive is broke ( cannot write or read)?

Yes.

see http://www.pendrivelinux.com/universal-usb-installer-easy-as-1-2-3/ which seems to work reasonably well with most things.

I did try the Puppy one some time ago and it worked OK.

Not that do it yourself is difficult, but this is tested and works.

you can also try using the software called YUMI for Windows
It can make pendrive bootable versions of many operating systems
It is free and easy to use
the problem is that it only works for Puppy version 5 and upwards
I think there can be a workaround to that but I haven't tried it yet
