Firefox Adobe Flash Player replacement addon

#1 Post by nooby »

I place this link here so it can get indexed by google and the other search engines.

If you think the title needs a more apt way of telling what it is all about
suggest something and I most likely try to comply.

Original thread has this title
Newly Discovered Video Assistance for Winded Old Junkers
Which to my poor English would not have made me aware of that it is a
"Firefox Adobe Flash Player replacement addon "

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefo ... oreplacer/
Replace embedded flash videos and display them
with a different plugin or standalone player, download
or automatically redirect to WebM player when available.
Thanks to all involved for providing this and links and comments on
original thread where all discussion should continue.
This post is for indexing so people can find it again just in case
they forget the original title.

not an ideal solution though

LightSpark

Well nooby, since you started a thread about flash player replacement options.

I guess it can't hurt to throw this in the thread.

http://sourceforge.net/apps/trac/lightspark

http://sourceforge.net/apps/trac/lightspark/wiki/FAQ

Just supplying info. Make whatever use of it.

Thanks, I am not on that level. They say in the FAQ

"Lightspark started as an experiment in achieving high performance
by exploiting the features offered by modern hardware.
Such target is nearly impossible to reach working inside an existing
and large project such as Gnash. As anyway Gnash performs ok
on older clips (those not using AVM2/ActionScript 3)
currently lightspark is able to fallback on Gnash to handle them.

Lightspark tries to do everything in the right way by following
the specifications released by Adobe. I also think that Flash
is a technology that is here to stay for a long time, both for market
and technological reasons, so a well made (read: not an hack) open source
implementation is a investment for the open source community. "

Further down an important note:

" Flash is not a media player. Flash allows client code to apply
a variety of effects/transformations on both video and audio.

This means that lightspark needs access to the raw decoded video/audio
frames and must handle the presentation of them itself to gain the needed flexibility. "

Sadly it has problems with ATI videocards.

Roky would that Lightspark work better than the Flash Player Replacement
addon that is linked to? I ahve not tested any of it due to lack of inner drive

I've always found that FlashVideoReplacer caused my browser to use more ram and cpu, because everything just slows down.

Which is why I use userscripts to accomplish about the same thing.

To run scripts in your browser use:

Greasemonkey: www.greasespot.net
Scriptish: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefo ... scriptish/

I don't use chrome but I think it has native script support.
I know that Opera does.

Then just mosey on to Userscripts.org and peruse their bountiful offering of Youtubey goodness.

I personally use Viewtube. I used to use Linterna Magica but the newer versions have been glitchy and incompatible.

Another nice addon is the Wildfox video addon for Firefox.
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefo ... on/?src=ss

It converts html 5 code into html 4 so that you can view html 5 videos with browser plugins. :)

I also install unplug:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefo ... src=search

Which downloads media from any webpage.

It works awesome with InlineDisposition:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefo ... on/?src=ss

Inline stops you from downloading certain mime types, automatically playing them in the browser. So Unplug + InlineDisposition= Free media viewing.

That is considering whether or not your browser is configured to handle that mime type.

...But the above pretty much eradicates 90% of all flash necessities.

Hope I helped.

Gnuxo much appreciated that you cared for us and
took time to describe how to do it that way instead.

Thanks!

Don't mention it.
That information deserves to be known.

Also a bit of tidbit information is that Midori can share plugins with gecko browsers so if you have gnome-mplayer, you can also use viewtube and scripts on Midori.
Though newer versions of Midori are recommended due to the option to install userscripts.

Of course I found that Parole media player and Parole plugin work more smoothly on Midori, then gnome mplayer.

Pouvez-vous faire une synthèse en français, Which would be usefull for frenchies and francophone people. Merci beaucoup. Pelo

I don't speak french unfortunately. And I think I don't want to just paste my post into google translate.

So...if you can translate into french, you can repost this information in french.

...Anything to help people get away from flash.
