I have a Windows box with no recovery disk, so I'm thinking of taking the plunge into Linux.

It's only really used for surfing the web; but I don't want to delete the commercial s/w and it only has a small HDD.

I like the sound of booting into Puppy Live from USB.

Any experience of/thoughts on Adobe AIR/iplayer desktop under Puppy?

Any obvious compatibility constraints vs. eg. Ubuntu derivatives?

I understand that third party s/w may allow download of BBC prog's; but for the purposes of this thread, I am thinking about compatibility with the official s/w.

Hi there

You do not need to use Adobe Air Player for the 'Get_Iplayer' application here on the forum.

One the application is installed you will find it in your 'Home' directory.

If you wish to download and keep the contents you have downloaded, you will need a large save file alternatively you can save your contents outside of the 'pupsave' file that you have created ( better option! ).

The contents are not DRM protected and therefore you should be able to view them back on a different device/OS.

i haven't managed to install the official iplayer app on puppy , i have tried it on windows and believe the get_iplayer app offers many advantages.

1 there's no DRM , so you can play what ever you download with any media player. and any device.
2 you can also keep what you download as there's no 30 day limit
3 streaming programs with get_player is far superior to watching in the browser.

What I love about this application is that it allows me to download/record HD content in MKV format.

Having a text output of all the content available is fast to download and makes it easier to search for the content you require.

If you wish to use the application in any 'state' of the puppy os, you can simply copy the contents of the application directory outside of your home directory eg to a hard drive and save all the contents their instead. All you have to do is created a 'symlink' back to the original location ie the home directory.

RTMPDump (included in the app) ensures that your download can be continued even if you drop the connection for any reason.

FLVstreamer gives excellent results for playback of streaming content.

Conversion of downloaded content into MP4, MKV, M4A takes a minute or two on a fairly new processor.

It's such a small digital 'footprint' on your OS as an installed application it delivers a whole lot more!!
