A Compaq 110-1010 vintage 2009-ish, I'll be amazed if it's only USB 1, but thanks for the tip.
kevin bowers wrote: What filesystem(s) are on the drives? And is this peculiar to Slacko or will LuPu or some other Puppy do the same thing?...
I have no facility to download lupu at the moment - but I'll try that over the weekend.
kevin bowers wrote: If it is a FAT filesystem you can try:

Code: Select all

mount /dev/xxx -t vfat -rw /mnt/xxx

They are all NTFS and I have already tried that, but thanks again.

Are there any log files other than dmesg which would provide some useful information? dmesg is not telling me much...

Thanks again, R.

Hi.

First off, thanks to all in involved in Puppy, in all it's flavours.
Although I am reporting what appears to be a very minor bug in the
Slacko 5.3.3 series, the efforts related to Slacko are very much
appreciated. It is, indeed, very good.
Hopefully I am not wasting your time by reporting something that is already known. I have tried to check, but may not have been very horough.

The problem:
A right-click on a clear area of the desktop (under the default configuration) brings up the menu, as expected. After this is cleared (by a left-click), subsequent right-clicks on the desktop icons (including the drive icons) result in the desktop menu appearing, as if they were right-clicks on a clear area of the desktop (or as if the icons were not there, or simply not identified).
A subsequent left-click (or in some/many cases two spaced left-clicks) on one of the icons results in it working as expected. Following this, right-clicking on the icons also works as expected (as if the "problem trigger" had been reset).
Another right-click on a clear area of the desktop recreates the problem, and subsequent left-clicking on an icon clears it again.

Wary 5.3 and Racy 5.3 do not seem to display the same behaviour on the same hardware (Intel 845 and 945 graphics - although I would suspect it might be to do with ROX in some way).

As noted above, it is very minor. I only noticed it when trying to nut out an
intermittent loss of a drive icon when right-clicking it. I think that might
have been user error- trying to be too quick, and accidently double-clicking
(perhaps catching the "remove item" menu option).
I think it's only a minor usage issue, and I am only reporting it because it
was found (and on the unlikely off chance it might be a pointer to something that might be troubling others).

Thanks again.

Minor right-click (default config) bug

#109 Post by ETP »

Baldronicus:
Bug confirmed. (Also exists in 5.3.3.2.) It would seem that we have all been living with it!
Minor as you say, but very confusing for anyone new to Slacko.
Thanks for your report.

It is the same with Slacko 5.3.1 which is lightning fast, totally stable and ideally fits my needs.

I'm almost used to the desktop drive icons disappearing on a right-click, I blame it on the mouse sending a double-click signal (it's a cheap wired mouse anyway). This happens in Slacko and Lupu both, usually when I'm trying to unmount a drive. Just means that about one shot in three or four I have to open pmount.

TIme & date settings messed up!

#113 Post by christhi »

Using Slacko 5.3.3...

ON both "fido" user and root session, I got this annoying permanent issue of time and date being always off by hours, sometimes days.

Even after doing a net sync as root, time and date's always messed up when I reboot Puppy.

This is a major issue. The system needs proper time settings for it to work correctly. How do I solve this?

Thanks

Ready for a fun one?

I installed the .sfs for Skype from the SlickPet installer... I lost the taskbar and all right-click functionality immediately after? I unload the .sfs and it works just fine again. Thoughts?

Also, I can't get the Pet Package Manager to open for some odd reason, though that's been since I started using Slacko. I got it to open one time, and never again.

Did you install any apps? It might have been a bad pet.

Try looking in /root/.packages/user-installed-packages and maybe delete the last entry, or more.

I had a similar problem in Fatdog, mind you it may not be the same issue in Slacko.

No, actually. I was just looking at what was listed on it.

Now, here's the kicker... I unloaded the Skype sfs, downloaded the DEV sfs and the jre sfs, loaded all three and rebooted... all working fine now?

No clue what it was, but I haven't found any other issues so far. Just don't for the life of me know what caused it to do that....

As for the pet package manager... it's working again too...

Strange much? I think so...

Odd... I resized my personal save file this morning, and now ROX Pinboard won't run at boot? I can't get it to boot at all, nor ROX File Manager? I noticed in my system logs (Cause I do check them) this under boot:

I can answer that one. ISO9660 filesystem is used on CDs and DVDs, and sr0 is your first CD/DVD drive. Puppy was looking for files on a CD just in case it was there, but you were booting from HD, right? It simply failed to find a CD, usually because there was none in the drive. Not related to your Rox problems, I wouldn't think, unless you were actually booting from CD. I suspect corrupted system files, maybe a HD failure?

Well... I loaded without my save file... then mounted my save file... and copied some of the original system files over from the slacko 533 sfs... and it works... 0.o?

I think I'm just going to delete my save file and re-start from scratch... seems like a good idea at this point...

Apparently, I must have either deleted or modified some system files that didnt' need to be messed with somewhere or another... though I haven't messed with anything other than changing the desktop background and installing some pets...

I'm leaning towards a bad pet or sfs somewhere...

I'll start fresh and then go from there...

I do not know if this was brought up before, but when I boot Slacko 5.3.3, and open a terminal, I see:
bash: setenv: command not found
bash: /etc/profile.d/libglib2.csh: line 28: syntax error: unexpected end of file

Is this anything to be concerned about?

Also, I am currently running the ICE window manager.

Hey 8-bit

Yes, it was raised here.
It happens to me after installing, inter alia, glib2-2.28.6.txz package.

It's enough to delete all *.csh scripts from /etc/profile.d/ and the message(s) will disappear.

Slacko works fine with my normal full installation to ext 2 partition of the internal hard drive on my Acer with 2x Intel(R) Atom(TM) CPU 230 @ 1.60GHz and 903MB of memory. I am using the optional NVidia driver for the video hardware. I also did an experimental frugal install to a USB hard drive to ext2 partition. I chose to use the entire ext2 partition for saving (pmode=6). I did get the notice that this is an experimental mode. I have been using the Slacko USB installation to try out different browser pets. The browser pets work fine. However, the installation does not shutdown and returns to a console problem. I can end the system with /bin/busybox reboot or /bin/busybox poweroff. This method of shutdown or reboot results in filesystem errors causing fsck at next start up.

It seems the shutdown problems still exists with this type of frugal installation (for save to entire Linux partition). The normal frugal installation to a save file works fine. I hope this helps.Thank you all the work on Slacko.

I found a better way(?) to shut down from the console after console prompt comes back. Press the (in)famous CTRL ALT DEL keys and everything stops. Additionally, the file system is stopped properly. No more FSCK errors at start up. Hope this helps.

At the moment, I'm not using Slacko so can't try your suggestion. But I'm wondering whether you might mean CTRL ALT BACKSPACE here? :? That is what I have to use with Dpup Exprimo.
