Slacko 5.3.3 bug reports and feedback

#1 Post by 01micko »

It's all announced here

Please report anything here

New Slacko homepage

NEWS
gtkdialog update .. see bottom of this post.
______________________________________________

There are a list of known issues on the above linked homepage

Other fixes

- update PPM to fix Bibletime deps
- Fix here for PPM bug
- (critical) aufs-util bugfix, particularly for developers aufs-utils-3.pet
- for possible fixes for synaptics touch pads see HERE (thanks to npierce)

-IMPORTANT I will no longer compiling seamonkey and firefox packages. Slackware itself does a fine job of this and keeps them updated. I have enabled a new repo called "patches" which contains all the latest Slackware security updates and all are compatible with any slacko from 530 to 533. SEE ATTACHMENT.

INSTRUCTIONS:
  • 1. Open Puppy Package Manager (aka PPM, petget)
    2. Open the configuration window (spanner, wrench, screwdriver icon, top left, you will see the tooltip if you hover the cursor)
    3. from the left side select "Update Now" button to update the PPM databases. You can update all if you like but the important one is "patches" from Slackware, you only NEED that one.
    4. Once this is done close PPM
    5. Open PPM again and choose to configure again
    6. Now, from the right pane make sure the "slackware-13.37-patches" repo checkbox is set.
    7. close and restart PPM to refresh
    8. select patches radio button and search for seamonkey, firefox, whatever you can find that you want to update, there is not a lot, mainly critical stuff only.
It is a known issue that things such as seamonkey and firefox will turn up in the network menu instead of internet with slackware packages. Fix pending.

NOTE: the attached package is NOT fully compatible with FATSlacko, however it won't do any harm, just likey list depends that you already have.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

To complement the "patches" repo I have developed an "updates manager" that handles the updates specifically. It includes Seamonkey and Firefox updates to the latest versions which will be updated for another year or so (circa Oct 2013) upstream. This will be included in future versions.

Update 16/01/2013: Updates manager works nicely 8). Just updated to seamonkey-2.15

I don't know about other total noobs but this Nooby noob
he failed to get which of the versions he was supposed to dl.

slacko-5.3.3-4g-SCSI.iso
or
slacko-5.3.3-highmem-PAE-SCSI.iso

I only have 1GB so that is not high mem.
So I took the first one. Still only 38% downloaded.
So really popular the server seems overloaded :)
I use Google Search on Puppy Forum
not an ideal solution though

Someone asked about the kernel sources in the announcement thread, is this correct for the non-pae version?
http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/dis ... _s_4gA.sfs

and the PAE?

Kernel source links look correct to me James.. as well as the links in Slickpet

However i added a page to the main download folder to avoid any confusion:

Slacko 5.3.3 bug reports and feedback

#7 Post by Billtoo »

Manual frugal install to an 8gb flash drive.

Slacko Puppy, version 5.3.3 on Sat 5 May 2012

Chip description:
2.0 VGA compatible controller
Intel Corporation Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 18)
oem: Intel(R)Ironlake Desktop Graphics Chipset Accelerated VGA BIOS
product: Intel(R)Ironlake Desktop Graphics Controller Hardware Version 0.0

X Server: Xorg
Driver used: intel

X.Org version: 1.9.5
dimensions: 1280x1024 pixels (338x270 millimeters)
depth of root window: 24 planes

# glxgears
Running synchronized to the vertical refresh. The framerate should be
approximately the same as the monitor refresh rate.
302 frames in 5.0 seconds = 60.329 FPS
301 frames in 5.0 seconds = 60.017 FPS
301 frames in 5.0 seconds = 60.018 FPS

Memory 6091MB (185MB used)

The only problem so far is that I had to clean /etc/profile.d of csh
files after installing kdegames from ppm.

Otherwise, great job!

The NLUUG mirror is very fast for downloading.

First boot without save file works very well but all the reboots
after creating savefile fails.

It start all over not being able to use the savefile.
Icons show _ in triangle How do I get them back?
No wall pater background is shown.

Do I use wrong code?

It sounds like your savefile got scrambled. Boot using "pfix=ram", delete the old one and start a new one.

I did a frugal install of Slacko 5.3.3 on my AMD Athlon 2400 with nVidia GeForce FX 5200 graphics card.

I did a fresh installation with mixed results. Sound and internet connection just fine, But, no menus, neither with the tray-bar icon or right click on the desktop. Also problems with icons: Setup and Slickpet were cut off at the bottom. The bottom half appeared when the icon was dragged to a new position on the desktop, but the change was not permanent. In addition, the drive icons disappeared (as I discovered) behind the tray bar.

These problems were not present in Slacko 5.3.2.7, but they were evident in Slacko 5.3.2.9. I was about to send in a bug report . . . . Sorry, I should have reacted sooner :( .

I ported my 5.3.2.7 save file to 5.3.2.9 - which solved the problem there. Porting the save file from 5.3.2.9 to 5.3.3 once again does the trick. Everything works fine.

Interestingly, glxgears reports ca. 2050 fps as compared to 3040 fps with 5.3.2.9. (using the proprietary driver). Not a problem. Slacko is super.

I even deleted them and then made the "pfix=ram" in case
some file existed in a back up directory. I know I have a lucy
back up save file there

So now it worked better much appreciated.

So now I will reboot again to see it if remains good the second reboot

Odd error after second boot. Fail to write anything using the keyboard.
But it works in lupu528 so nothing wrong with kbd

Test again now it works so maybe something with USB connection?
Kbd is USB connected.

Seamonkey lack the scrollbar to the far right.
I tested with saving to ntfs partition and in a previous beta I did observe this. There is a reason. The ntfs-3g driver is very finicky and will mount ntfs READ ONLY if there is a single error or suspicion of an error. This is a safety mechanism to preserve data. Consequently, your newly created save file doesn not get mounted RW (read/write) at shutdown and your session is not saved.

You are warned to defragment the ntfs drive before saving in the shutdown save process. It should also carry a warning to run CHKDSK.EXE which checks the disk for errors.

If the problem persists there may be some damage to your drive.

There is a work around which I have explained before. I'll do it again.
When you boot and you get no desktop open a terminal and type.

Code: Select all

gdk-pixbuf-query-loaders --update-cache
restart X, reset your wallpaper. Things should save now but be aware that if there are errors on the ntfs drive it is possible the save file will not mount.

This begs the question.. "Why does it mount at all if it didn't save?"

The answer is that in the initial RAM disk there is a different, older version of ntfs-3g which is a bit more forgiving. This one mounts the save file. The version in the main filesystem is newer and more pedantic.

Thanks Jim, I found the problem, a space in the dependencies list. I'll upload a new packages list in the next few days and a PPM update will fix the Bibletime issue.
