Jobo's 'setting up Puppy' thread

#1 Post by jobo »

for those new to the topic, ive just sort of concluded a thread about how to install pupy, though the title wouldnt give you a clue and have, with a few conplications and a lot of help installed puppy 2.1.6 on a 90s lapy with a p3 125 mb ram and its going great guns

so, i now need to up date the programs/learn how to use it and am instrested in help/advice on to do this

my computer use to this point is mostly visiting forums/ using torrents /p2p networks, file sharing sites, you tube, just the usual really, not video editing or anything clever

my intial responce is that i need to up date the browser, id like script blocker etc the ziper, vidieo player et al so recomendations on which to use
plus id like to install tor bundle if anyone knows how
and
what other toys are there that you know about that i dont
plus anything else really driver updates perhaps ?

maybe useful for others to include a link to your earlier thread

I know you probably don't want to go back to installing puppy again, after all of your work, but hopefully the process should be the same. I'd suggest giving these two puppies a try:

2.14x classic pup
http://208.109.22.214/puppy/viewtopic.p ... e7400d48f5

akita
http://scottjarvis.com/page112.htm

both use old kernels, are aimed at old computers, but have updated programs, including much of the stuff you are asking for. I have used 2.14x classic quite successfully on a laptop like yours. Although as I highlight on the other thread, you will really need to get either a swap file or swap directory going to have good success.

Barring that, you might start by finding programs from here
http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/dis ... ackages-2/

i think in the puppy you have, you should just click on a downloaded .pet package to install it.

also, I think many of the .pets for 2.14x and legacy os should run.

What thread is that? (Other beginners might learn from your experience. That's the point of this forum.)

This is 2.1.1, right?

Ahh.. there's Xrun! Goto /usr/local/bin and drag it onto your desktop.

It'll start most things, but I doubt this wireless thingy'a yours.

Can you open that console up top and put this in:

Code: Select all

lspci -nn | grep -i network
And goto connect >> by network interface..

Does Pup list both a driver and interface?

Then dump it to file: lspci -nn | grep -i network > lspci.txt

It'll be in your /root folder where you will be able to c/p.

What about the "connect" icon.. what did it say?

trying to be helpful, but you have give specific info. Include program names, and exactly where you got them (web address please!). If there is an error, say exactly what you tried, and what the error was. This will probably require taking notes as you go.

Otherwise all we can offer are lousy guesses.

what happens when you try to cut and paste as I outlined?

Sometimes if a program doesn't appear in the menu, you can open it by going to the terminal and typing the program name (which might require some guesses)

It looks like there is a way to run tor as a portable app (yet another way to install programs!). I'm not positive if this will work, since I don't use tor
