2 pane FILE Manager ... thanks to Pemasu |
|
muCommander has been introduced by Pemasu.
This is a 2-Pane filemanager (FM).
It was just updated by DPUP5520.
Latest version of this 2-Pane FM (V0.9)
It REQUIRES JAVA! But, is an outstanding tool for our use. 2-Pane filemanagers have many useful benefits to distro users and developers, alike..
if any member has ever wanted a FM that allows side by side comparison of folders in PUPPY, this is a god-send in Puppyland.
Thanks @Pemasu

Probalbly should have mentioned this earlier.
Thanks to both Musher0 and Pemasu. AND, DPUP5520 was instrumental in getting it operational from the PUP Menu (see Menu>Filesystem>muCommander)

On another note
I wonder whether this could be a total File-Management solution. It is polished, professional and has a clean-clear look about it. And, it is fast on my Centrino laptop running Exprimo. This tool could make FileManagement so easy in the Puppy Desktops for new and experienced Windows converts.
Maybe an useful idea in Puppy's future.
Beware: Do NOT delete unless you are totally in agreement with what muCommander is telling you on-screen!!!

Most pups have Rox-Filer Hard-wired in.
except for TXZ_pup.
anyone used Muppy-Filer - not as total as muCommander.

Looks fine but a few questions,
How do you make the fonts larger?
Is it possible to single-click or double-click on a directory to open it?
Thanks,
Jim

Thanks,
Jim | I'm very new at using this tool along with much of the rest of the community. But, this offers a whole host of services not found elsewhere in Puppy Filemanagement tools.
Your questions
On your 1st question, I do not know how to do what you ask. But, I will join their forum and begin asking questions like you.
On your 2nd question, I've found that I have to position the mouse over its icon to get it to open. (there may be some sensitivity setting that may allow adjustment of this)
Additionally
One item many of Windows converts will like is the "tree" feature. - Open muCommander,
- go to View
- and click box for 'Show Tree View'
.

Hello, everyone.
On the subject of dual-pane file managers, we might have overlooked another excellent contribution: xfe. It is not only dual-pane, it can have a tree + two panes, or no tree + one pane, and anything in between. In other words, you can make it look like Thunar, emelfmw or ROX. It also comes with an image viewer, a plain text file viewer, and a deb and rpm unpacker. A choice of themes is also offered out of the box.
http://roland65.free.fr/xfe/index.php?page=screenshots
The most recent version (1.32.5) dates April 4, 2012.
I believe we have an older version in Puppy repos, but you can download complete deb or slackware executables of XFE v. 1.32.5 from here:
http://roland65.free.fr/xfe/index.php?page=download
This filer does not need java to run; however, the FOX toolkit library is required.
BFN.

Hi musher0,
XFE 1.32.3 installed with Slacko PPM. It's not the latest but it looks great and the preferences allow you to set up larger fonts, default applications, etc. Thanks for the recommendation.

For me, I've used XFE ( and the entire suite that comes with it ) nearly ever since coming over to Puppy from Windows 98se around version 1.0.2. It was introduced to me by forum member, Puppy dev, and programmer MU ( who likewise created Muppy-filer ).
It's the very first programme that I install into any Puppy I'm either installing OR testing simply because it is so extremely FAST. I use it as I can jet around between partitions, and my back-up directory, to quickly get a newly-installed Puppy up-and-running within minutes exactly the way I want with my large font directory, various themes and icons, gtk engines, software, etc.
Not only that but it's extremely easy to set it up so that clicking upon a .pet will install the file - simply click on the file and select from the GUI "petget" and check the box "associate" and you're finished. How neat is that?
Not only wouldn't I not use a Puppy without XFE, but I wouldn't use any other distro without it either. ( Hmm... but for that matter, why would I use any other distro come to think of it? LOL! )
Cheers/Amicalement!

( gcmartin? I didn't mean to steal your thread or anything - I know that muCommander is truly an awesome piece of work so I whole heartedly agree with you... to a point at least. It's just when you compare the size of the java toolkit to the size of the FOX toolkit it's like comparing boulders to grains of sand IMHO. On the otherhand, what with hard drive sizes being what they are today it's a moot point, eh? )
