:Fluxbox-1.3.7 desktop/wondow mgr

#1 Post by oldyeller »

Hello Everyone,

I have complied fluxbox-1.3.7 with imlib2 enabled for Precise.

For people who are new to puppy and linux Fluxbox is a desktop and window mgr. With many menu and window styles one can choose from that come with this pet and ones you can get on line.

You can get more styles here: http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=47029

Also here:

Get pet here for older puppies

http://smokey01.com/Oldyeller/pets/imli ... 5-i686.pet

For newer puppies
http://smokey01.com/Oldyeller/fluxbox-1.3.7-i486.pet

The imlib2 pet is the same for both

Enjoy

OK so you don't tell me what Fluxbox is .
I had a look at it and turns out its a window manager
OK so how can I start it ?
I get this when I try

Code: Select all

Failed to read: session.screen0.windowPlacement
Setting default value
BScreen::BScreen: an error occured while querying the X server.
another window manager already running on display :0
Error: Couldn't find screens to manage.
Make sure you don't have another window manager running.

Well I do of course but I am not going to stop it unless I can see what I am going to start and how to start it.

I thought to muck around and d/l the above two files and installed them .
Then I found processes in the menu and ended the process for JWM
Then in the depth of darkness I typed "xwindows fluxbox " and up it came

For info
http://fluxbox.org/

I like it and have been using it all night but have to note at shutdown all the buttons seem to work except "Shutdown"
II have to use reboot and catch it with the switch

Hmm I put an issue in to sourceforge on this and they were not at all interested in fixing the problems it has , rather they tried to pass the buck back to Puppy.

With the attitude they have I would not recommend this to anyone using Puppy.
Sorry oldyella

I just tested the pet again and found no change . Used fluxbox-1.3.7-i486.pet
It still does not shutdown when asked to and there is no menu entry to be able to switch between window managers either.

To start it I have to shut down the JWM process and type "xwindows fluxbox" which really is not a good way to do it for me .

Which of the pets did you use?

Read the post please. If that one is wrong then which is right for precise and perhaps the names should reflect that in the first post.

I have noticed that it also has a problem altering the size of windows opened in seamonkey.

Neither the left or right edge can be picked up and dragged , nor the top left or right corners, nor the bottom . I haven't experimented thoroughly but there are probably more window sizing faults.

Nah, much prefer JWM where all of the edges can be dragged properly

Can you alter your first post to read "WINDOW" please

Why people don't test

#14 Post by Pelo »

April tested it.. Why people don't test ... I Like Fluxbox..
Topic was forgotten. I will try this week.. Promised.
Musher0 provide window managers too. He is very fond of them..
PEKWM;;; I don't like, but test and change dress of your Puppies, from time to time. New desktops are poor !
How the puppy is dressed is so important ! (if not too much expensive in MBs)

I installed these files in my Slacko64 version of puppy. For a while it worked and looked great. Without warning x refused to start yesterday and when I booted in jwm, it worked but browsers came up with weird fonts.
I also had the shutdown problem, I had to exit to prompt and type "poweroff".

I removed the savefile and started from fresh, this time - on two clean attempts - fluxbox simply refused to work at all :-(

So if anyone can get a stable working version of this window manager I recommend it, it's a long time favourite of mine. This version however, seems glitchy.
