First update of arch I go hwdata conflicts, like a muppet I removed them to allow install to carry on [-f did not work].

Think I will try jwm via guide see if I have any more luck

I am going through the jwm setup using Arch again.

Step 3 has been updated
- the pacman program has to be updated

Step 3 Update 'Arch'
Arch is a rolling release - constantly updated .
Update command can take a while - took about 20 minutes on broadband

pacman -S pacman
pacman -Syu

there are also some procedures based around xinit/xstart
to prepare JWM that I have not documented and frankly am not sure how to implement

. . . hopefully Mark will have a Raspberry Pi shortly and can help out with info

Decided to edit configs rc.conf, locales, mirrorlist

Switched mirrors to Germany based ones and got a load of different updates

Now get a better looking console display

Tried to get openbox to run but needed xorg loaded first

Managed to get X running but system locked up while installing firefox. ..so called it a day

Odd thing with lspci was not able to get any output

Did add a swapfile I know you are not meant to use one with sd card but I could not stand the pain of waiting for packages to load.

This of course could be solved if running from ram...

I am very happy to say that the sd card I prepared with my arch-arm puppi filesystem and the boot partition from the original image booted up first time!

You need to edit the "xinitrc" file. This is found in /etc/x11/xinit.

You can leave most of it as is, but add

rox -p pin
jwm

at the end seems to work best.

Does Arch not have a repository of pre-compiled stuff that you can download from?

Yes, but Barry wanted to compile some of the Puppy old favourites from ourselves.

Question #3: How do I change the screen resolution to something like 1024 x 768?

qemu lets you go up to 800x600. Try using the file I've attached a pic of as your xorg.conf.

I am having problems with my SD card, it is not booting to the standard Arch img at the moment.

Your img is far more developed than my early attempts so this would be a great alpha release . . .

Hmmm, need to revise my earlier announcement

It did boot up as you could see, but no mouse or keyboard input was detected.
Since then I've been trying different set-ups. It seems than only one of the SD cards I own will actually work in the Pi. Hopefully I can overcome my input device problems later ...

Yes, now I wish I'd stuck with that set-up a bit longer and tried to trouble-shoot it (I had no mouse or keyboard, it turned out). Instead, I tried starting again with preparing the SD card and I've had kernel panic problems ever since. Giving up now - will try in the morning.

Actually it's a later version than the one i shared online. But since that promising beginning, I've had no luck at all!
I think I need to buy a new SD card and start over in the morning. The only one I have that seems to want to work is <2gb. So, quite tricky to work with.

I had two SD cards ready, neither was any good.

Argos do a recommended Transcend card with no problems at a fair price.

Your initial boot pic was an impressive success.

The most usual prob with keyboard and mouse is using a hub. Go straight in to the two USB ports. Also the best USB keyboard and mouse are generic clones. I used an Apple keyboard to start with. The Apple keyboard had two USB ports so is a hub too - not ideal.

Guys we are very near to the bare metal
and our frustrations will be turned into success for later adopters.

The Debian image is very much more stable and complete . . .
BUT without a doubt the Arch image has the cutting edge speed we crave . . .

I should have gone to argos ...
Instead I have spent quite a lot of time trying to fit the Arch image onto my sub 2gb card.
Anyway, getting somewhere now!
I will document any success, when I find it!

Many thanks antiloquax for the suggestion of adding "rox -p pin", "jwm" and "rox-filer" to /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc". This worked very well! I also think that JWM is a little faster than LXDE.

As far as screen resolution is concerned, the Debian6 image does not seem to have an /etc/X11/xorg.conf. I thought that I was crazy and had maybe clobbered the file somehow, and I checked my recent installation of Ubuntu 11.04, and it did not have the file either!

I checked at wiki.debian.org/Xorg, and they said that sometimes Xorg probes your hardware at every startup for the info, and that xorg.conf may indeed not be present and the system can still function.
But you can force creation of the file by "/etc/init.d/gdm stop", "cd /etc/X11" and then "sudo Xorg -configure". I tried this and got "unable to open socket for inet 6", "no devices to configure" and "configuration failed".

I guess emulators do not allow certain things. It looks like messing around with the resolution will have to wait till I have the real hardware.

Meanwhile my SD card from a games shop seems to have burnt out after a month of Rpi usage - does not seem very reliable - Que? Too many read/writes?

Congradulations on your and your teams progress lobster, my you have progressed since i've been across doing testing with the mageia2 group, yes it's finished and out, so I can get back to my puppy world,

The boards hadn't even arrived back then and now your up and running!

As far as SD cards are concerned, most generally sold to the general public have a limited useage life, it's mentioned in the blurb supplied with them. However if you have access to a commercial photographer supplier you can get a commercial grade card, about 25% dearer but with much longer life and a big multiple in memory cycles.

It also may be worth having a plunge with qvwm as an alternate windowmanager, it's a 95/98/Nt lookalike and fun to use, especially as it's icon pixels rotate horizontally instead of vertically as most windowmanagers usually do.

My RPi is up and running.
I had to force some of the updates (I think some of my early problems were to do with udev - not really sure).

@Lobster - have we got a plan?
I have no idea how to proceed!! I can try compiling some things, and I will try to get my puppi-like set up running and in a form that I can share with other users.

I am going to try to attach my "system.jwmrc" from the best version of Puppi I made so far. Just so people can have a look and improve upon it.

Attached is a screenshot from my RPi.
At the moment I am just using xorg-twm. The binaries I compiled on qemu seem okay so far.
I am having a few problems with usb devices. I have 2 hubs (both of which can be powered). When I try to power them, everything stops working! So far. I haven't been able to get my wifi adapter to work (although it was working yesterday!). I will def. have to have a bit of a break from setting up to do some programming. I have Vim and GCC so I'm happy!!

We have a direction . . .
A Puppi like ISO image (.img file) is a good start and
I will give that a go as soon as you upload
Compiling is the right direction

As soon as a woof2 compile is available I shall most likely use that
For now go with what interests you.

Play and document. Have fun.

Let me try and put the whole Puppi, Raspberry Pi, PARM into context . . .

Puppi is part of a long term strategy to make Puppy available on next generation ARM tablets and future smart phones and other devices.

So for example the use of things such as touch screens, voice control and making use of Android or other plug in apps is eventually possible.

First however we have to work to a common goal and working for well documented, specific hardware - cheap enough for everyone to splash out. This has evolved into the Raspberry Pi commitment.

In 2013 we MAY be able to work to a common ready made Android/Smartphone/tablet hardware device with worldwide availability . . .

At that time we can ask people to make a hardware commitment and pick up any fellow strays on the way . . .

OK now putting a more detailed plan together . . .
