Newbie questing about Packages, Pets and Repositories |
|
So I'm an old Linux guy and pretty proficient with "standard" Linux flavors ( Fedora, Ubuntu, Suse, etc... ). But having a hard time understanding the Puppy way of doing things.
I understand Pets, are pretty much the same as rpms or other packages, but how come I can't find all Pet packages that people reference that should be in the repositories. For instance, I see the DEVX Pet referenced in a lot of posts, which I need because I want to compile the NVidia drivers from source, but I can't find it anywhere.
How come I can only choose a max of 5 repositories in the package installer? Are there other standard repositories I should add by hand to get more availability in the package manager.
Can one install the apt-get package manager with Slacko puppy and configure it in a way to make packages compatible with this install.
Thanks for helping out, I'd troll the wiki but it seems to be down for the past couple days, if there is another link to the wiki I'd appreciate that link.

DEVX is actually an .sfs file. And its almost always in the same folder as the place where you download the original puppy iso. For example:
http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/puppylinux/puppy-5.2.8/
( an sfs file is a bit different from a .pet. Put it in the same directory as your savefile. You can use the bootmanager under setup to ensure that it gets loaded at boot. The newer puppies are also capable of loading sfs on-the-fly.

I don't know the reason why. But you can pick and choose different repositories to be available among the five by using the configure key.
Package management in puppy is pretty good, but it could be better. One of puppy's strengths and weaknesses is the degree to which it is community driven--or rather I should say driven by many individuals. As a result, in addition to the repositories, often the best place to find pets and the like is by searching the forums. Its not nearly as fast or convenient as the packagemanager, but by looking at the thread you can often learn about what works and doesn't, ect about a particular program.
I do agree that getting things more organized would be nice.
And I've been wondering about the wiki too.

If you look under quickpet, you'll see a drivers tab. Under that nvidia drivers. Might be useful.
