Full installs to 700m notebook and MSI netbook.
Runs very well on both.
As usual; slow or fast glxgears numbers are quite
meaningless in actual use.

Yep tested on 32 &64 bit, wired & wireless, ATI&nV - even works on SiS graphics as Bill (&me) discovered. It's pointless running this masterpiece on anything more recent than a couple of years old as there's no advantage.

Precise Puppy beta4 (no-pae), August 29, 2012

#379 Post by Billtoo »

I did a few tests:

hardinfo report precise beta 4:

OpenGL
Vendor VMware, Inc.
Renderer Gallium 0.4 on softpipe
Version 3.0 Mesa 8.0.3
Direct Rendering Yes

hardinfo report slackware 14.0 rc3:

OpenGL
Vendor X.Org R300 Project
Renderer Gallium 0.4 on ATI RV530
Version 2.1 Mesa 8.0.4
Direct Rendering Yes

---------------------------------------------

Hardware acceleration works on this pc in slackware 14rc3
but not in precise beta 4
Hardware acceleration with this graphics card has worked in lucid puppy using
the xorghigh driver, I'm pretty sure it was this agp version of the
ati x1600 pro card, but I also have the pciE version of the ati x1600 pro

I found an old lupu disk on the shelf and booted it up on this pc, I
installed an Xorg_High-1.1-Lucid.pet that I have stored on a flash
drive.
Hardware acceleration is working, hardinfo report shows:

OpenGL
Vendor DRI R300 Project
Renderer Mesa DRI R300 (RV530 71C2) 20090101 AGP 4x x86/MMX+/3DNow!+/SSE2 TCL
Version 1.5 Mesa 7.7.1
Direct Rendering Yes

I guess it's not important for most applications but google earth and
some games won't run without hardware acceleration working.

An updated version of the Xorg_High-1.1-Lucid.pet would be great for
ati and intel graphics users.

I volunteer 01micko for the job :)

Beta 4 pae working well with my radeon cedar card.

Again, glxgears must be telling lies as the performance is very good with gaming.

Thanks

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

EDIT:
There is a bug in report-video if xorgwizard is used to generate xorg.conf. In the case of radeon. On probing, fbdev and vesa are inserted in the xorg.conf as fallbacks I presume. When studying the /var/log/Xorg.0.log it is clear that radeon is loaded and working correctly. I used xorgwizard to get 24bit colour depth as the auto config was 16 (see above). Here is the out put of report-video:

...piped to tail -1 which gives the vesa result. Perhaps we should go back to the old method of scanning for #card0driver if a full xorg.conf is present.

Dell desktop
Pentium 4 processor
Nvidia nv37gl Quadro video card
precise5271-nopae frugal

Boots to desktop
Some desktop program icons missing or half visible
no items visible in menus
Some program icons in taskbar, but not all
The icons/entry's that should be showing in menu and taskbar. You can put mouse pointer at the location where they should be and left click will run the program that should have an icon/entry at that location.

Seems to be using Nouveau graphic driver.
Will not get to desktop if you select Vesa driver with Xorgwizard.
The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.
When I was a kid I wanted to be older.... This is not what I expected

Here is the third variant of beta4:

http://bkhome.org/blog/?viewDetailed=02976

Guys, I don't want to fatigue you with all these pups to test!

This third one is probably my preferred choice, as it uses Ubuntu 'mesa' DEBs rather than my PET. it runs fine on my laptop, but that is all I have to test on.

I wonder if it makes any difference choosing 24-bit rather than 16-bit color depth. Earlier JWM versions have had a problem in this area, I think the main trouble was with 16-bit.

Edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf, change the "16" in two places to "24".

Hello BarryK

Success!

Precise-5.2.72

With my AthlonII x2 plus RS880G integrated graphics the Radeon r600g driver loads correctly.

From Xorg.0.log

[ 224.558] (II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/radeon_drv.so
[ 224.558] (II) [KMS] Kernel modesetting enabled.

[ 224.719] (II) RADEON(0): Acceleration enabled

[ 224.729] (II) AIGLX: Loaded and initialized r600
[ 224.729] (II) GLX: Initialized DRI2 GL provider for screen 0

So both 2D and 3D acceleration are working using the r600g driver. No LLVM or swrast!

From Hardinfo:

-OpenGL-
Vendor : X.Org
Renderer : Gallium 0.4 on AMD RS880
Version : 2.1 Mesa 8.0.3
Direct Rendering : Yes

From glxgears:

ATTENTION: default value of option vblank_mode overridden by environment
3891 frames in 5.0 seconds - 778.194 FPS

Couple of omissions on first look:

Power management frequency scaling was not working and the Frequency Scaling tool did not contain anything useful.

I did:

Code: Select all

modprobe powernow_k8
Then frequency scaling was working and I could set ONDEMAND in the frequency scaling tool.

The mystery of Puppy timezones continues... There is no: zulu, UTC or gmt that I could find. I normally set zulu, because my PC clock is always set to gmt and that is what I want the time to display.

Thank you for this puppy

Hello 01micko

if you do:

Code: Select all

export vblank_mode=0
glxgears
Then glxgears does not run synchronised to the display and you get a proper number

No Desktop

#392 Post by LoboGrande »

Hello folks, I've tried several of the Precise Puppy Beta's and none seem to load the desktop. I get a black screen and an mouse arrow but no taskbar and it won't respond to keyboard rebooting from the Live CD.

P4 3.4 ghz/socket 478 with 4gb of DDR Ram
Asus P4S800DX mobo
NVidia GeForce 7350 PCIe Video card.

Works fine with Wary 5, Akita, Lucid Puppy 5.2.5, .8, .9

It is more likely to be a nouveau issue in bigpup's case I believe. The symptoms are near identical to drblock2's (incidentally, it's with his help I came up with the nouveau_unload script in slacko development). I reckon the only way around this is to have it written in the release notes because nouveau has advanced well in recent times and it would be a shame to leave it out. Xorgwizard is *supposed* to work with it, I haven't tested this in Precise. At a guess nouveau would support 95% of nvidias quite well. Works fine on my 4 cards ranging from an old vanta to an 8300GS.

Those having trouble with nouveau (ie nvidia cards) could try puppy pfix=ram nouveau.modeset=0 at CD boot or on the kernel line.

Hello Billtoo

According to Xorg your RV530 is supported by the r300g driver which has gallium 3D built-in

But in this puppy /usr/lib/dri/r300_dri.so is missing, while r600_dri.so is there.

I expect you could get it from the Ubuntu repo. Then it should work.

There is some r300 firmware already but I don't know whether it is complete.

A search of the Ubuntu repo for r300 would show you.

I expect r100 and r200 stuff also needs to be added to this puppy for other cards.
