Great !
Please let me know if there is are any issues for you re. api key, and I will uninstall the .pet.
I think the worst thing that can happen is that the key will be disabled by google, possibly because of limits / quota (amount of users per sec or whatever).
Then gtk-youtube-viewer will stop working. But I don't expect many people would use it, so it's probably ok.
To be safe I'd advice to get your own personal api key, your choice of course.

Sorry Fred, I spoke too soon, without adequately testing:

Yesterday, I did a simple search with gyv and it did put up a lot of video thumbnails in the main panel. But I didn't try to play any videos. I just assumed that since they were now available, gyv was functioning

Today, I went to try to play a video, but the play function, and most others were blanked out.

Play didn't work.

The comments function was not blanked out, and for some reason, that works.

Any error message when you run gtk-youtube-viewer from terminal ?
Which player you use and is it set correct in the preferences?
Is youtube-dl the latest version ? (run Gtk-youtube-update from menu)
I don't think it has to do with the api key, btw, since it does show the search results (otherwise will show 404 error message)
I tested in Tahrpup 6.0.6 and works fine using mpv player.

EDIT: i see now what you mean with right-click 'Play" is blank, it's just that the matching icon is missing (and lots of other icons too)

Thanks Fred,

I did already update the viewer with the menu updater.

Output below from running in terminal. The first 3 error lines ocurred at startup.

The last line about VLC Player occurred after I tried to play a video. The player window opened momentarily then closed immediately.

I do remember reading something somewhere about needing MVP(?) as a player and problem with VLC?

Code: Select all

Here's a "cde-package" for gtk-youtube-viewer 3.7.4
Should run on all 32-bit Linux systems, so on all Puppies too, old or new.
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/s/e5h ... ar.gz?dl=1
See for usage info in 'ReadMe-youtube-viewer_youtube-dl.cde', after extracting.

Also updated the .pet package for v3.7.4 (added missing icons), see:
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 72#1052372

That one works well, too, Fred. Though the Puppy desktop Menu items for the viewer and updater are no longer there.

I opened GYV from the terminal.

try the Russian online viewer / download! for it use the youtube... address but write without espace

ss

before that!

Example:

https://ssyoutube.com/watch?v=KxWLd8bOg4I

(if you do that with this url, a 680 MB download begins, over 1 hour 45 min. best German music where you can see our daughter in action at one of her two world-famous workplaces as her orchestra plays as well at the Elbphilarmonie as at the Opera. Conductor was Nagano, the actual Music artistic director of the town. If you don't have 680 MB free in your RAM, select a target directory on your HD or renounce!)

top picture:

the site savefrom opens and you see at the first part where the red point is. Hit on the "download" key. The second bottom part opens (as well as at the same time an advertising new page, sorry close it immediately! If you download more, it will continue 3..6 time to do that, but continue without more advertising after that!) . Hit on the second "download" you are seeing now and your download begins really!

bottom picture:

You find (the begin of) your download in the directory for example "/file" (here in Quirky64bit, probably the more smaller 64 bit system with such performances  . You see, top picture, the browser is a very old version of Seamonkey 2.32. It continues to work best for me!).

You can immediately start the beginning record hitting on the new icon and begin to look the target.

this site permit to download extremely big y! files!

I am currently using it with ToOpPy (based on Puppy Precise)! So should work on older Puppies...

[EDIT 1]: Updated to 3.7.4-2, see the message above.

[EDIT 2]: Some "translatable" chains inside the *.glade file introduce problem if... translated! The "Search for videos" function doesn't work properly > "Something went wrong". The words anytime, days, weeks, months, years must stay as they are, in English (that said, for potential translators). I already noticed this strange behavior in the previous 3.5.0 version but it has not been corrected by the creator of GTK YouTube Viewer (don't know if it is the same in the 64 bit version?) and I forgot it.
So, I reloaded the 3.7.4-2 PET and SFS with the corrected French *.glade file.
Sorry!

Cordialement.

Has anyone had any luck logging into your youtube accounts?

The "click here to get the authentication code" button doesn't do anything, so I went to google and requested the OAuth authentication code and put it into the box, but it doesn't do anything for me.

Is it broken or am I missing something?

Dan

(Using Debian Dog Stretch Open box version).

This is probably due to the fact that access to the internet via a web browser is not functional, at least in the 32 bit version...
Maybe you can fill manually data inside the file gtk-youtube-viewer/cde-root/root/.config/youtube-viewer/api.json?

Cordialement.

Thanks, that got me on the right track.

You have to sign up for both an api key and the Oauth authentication, put the values in the .json file, then apparently wait a while for it to propagate, THEN press the button in my screenshot and authorize the application.

I opened it via terminal with "gtk-youtube-viewer -debug" when it worked, but I don't know if that made a difference.

See https://github.com/trizen/youtube-viewer about 2/3's the way down the page and the 2 linked help desk calls for more detailed instructions.

Thanks,

Dan

gtk-youtube-viewer 3.7.4-2 SFS 3.7.4 PET Precise 571-light

#453 Post by sindi »

The SFS works perfectly, GUI version. I did not check the PET as GUI.

I run yt-viewer from a terminal instead of the GUI,
by typing the following two lines (or making a script yt4)

For the SFS:
cd /usr/local/gtk-youtube-viewer
/youtube-viewer.cde --res=480p

For the PET cd to where you unpacked it instead

It works despite two error messages:
[!]Invalid client_id:
[!]Invalid client_secret:

Many thanks to everyone who worked on this. I had been watching
videos on a 4" screen for months now (Newpipe Legacy - which does
not let you specify video length or date).

That has to do with the same as dancytron mentioned above:
See https://github.com/trizen/youtube-viewer about 2/3's the way down the page and the 2 linked help desk calls for more detailed instructions.
For to login you need to edit /usr/local/gtk-youtube-viewer/cde-root/root/.config/youtube-viewer/api.json by adding the client_id and client_secret keys.
EDIT: Not sure if login works with this cde-package setup, didn't test.

straw-viewer

#455 Post by sindi »

Thanks for the link. I see that the youtube-viewer straw-viewer does not require any keys.
Has anyone packaged it for puppy linux? Slackware has it. I don't need it.
