gtk-youtube-viewer (for lots of pups)

#1 Post by 666philb »

this is gtk-youtube-viewer

Image

gtk-youtube-viewer allows you to search, play and download youtube videos direct from the desktop. no browser required.
this is excellent for those of us who can't stream flash full screen. Even a low quality video would be jerky for me in the browser. With this though, i can actually stream fullscreen hd from my desktop. :)
And people with slow internet connections can download the video to watch

this is quite a nifty app.... website here https://github.com/trizen/youtube-viewer

Note1: if the video doesn't play fullscreen, try installing your graphic drivers.

Note2: gtk-youtube-viewers default download location is /root/ , which will quickly fill up the savefile!!! Change this setting in the programs preferences.

Note3: keyboard shortcuts for playing videos herehttp://www.keyxl.com/aaa2fa5/302/MPlaye ... rtcuts.htm

Note4: if you have video/audio sync issues , look here http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=82895

Lucid 528-004, full install.

Is there suppose to be a menu entry made when installed?
I can not find one.
During install, it said entry would be in menu-> Multimedia, but nothing there.
The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.
When I was a kid I wanted to be older.... This is not what I expected
YaPI(any iso installer)

hi bigpup

yes there's supposed to be a menu entry in multimedia & internet (is for me)

maybe you need to drop to prompt and do.... fixmenus jwm

alternatively you can start it from a terminal with..... gtk-youtube-viewer

or drag and drop the .desktopfile in... /usr/share/applications to your desktop

Specs:
Compaq Deskpro PII / 350MHz / 320MB RAM

Installed and launched GTK Youtube viewer, in Wary 5.1.1.
Typed in window (with quotes): "Cozy Powell" "RIP my friend".
(Great video for testing; downloads quickly, even with dial-up.)
Then hit "Enter" key.

Right-clicked thumbnail.
Left-clicked "Download Youtube video."
(It saves to root.)
Clicked on mp4 file and...unbelievable!

Tried another video with a bit more overhead.
(Peanut Buddah by Chris Poland's OHM)
Audio is way ahead of video, which is somewhat slow-mo.
However, if viewed with conventional Flash/Youtube setup, it would be a slide show.
A 700+MHz processor would probably deliver consistently good results.

Thanks for posting...this is a keeper! :D

Before this I used videodownloadhelper, a Seamonkey extension; as comprehensive as that program was, it was somewhat clunky.

My problem (currently) is inadequate HW acceleration with flash, not internet speed; gtk-youtube-viewer makes it incredibly easy to browse youtube with mplayer without necessarily saving anything... great program.
Primary - Intel Pentium 4 2.40GHz, 571MB RAM, ATI Radeon 7000. Linux Mint 17 Qiana installed.
Secondary - Pentium 3 533MHz, 385MB RAM, ATI Rage 128 Pro ULTRA TF. Precise Puppy 5.7.1 Retro full install.

the out of sync thing, is i think a problem with mplayer, i get it sometimes with hd video, pressing the 'd' key whilst playing enables frame dropping and may help.
vlc doesn't seem to have this problem though

I've tried disabled, enabled and hard framedropping settings.
The other settings seem worse, because it goes into slideshow mode.

At best, the MPlayer clock actually runs fast, and the slow-motion video runs for quite a while after the audio is finished. That's how far behind it gets.

Which vlc is best for Wary?

vlc-1.1.5-w5.pet
or
vlc-gtk-2.3.pet

Also, how do I set vlc as default in Wary 5.1.1?
(Unlike later Wary versions, it doesn't have the GUI for choosing default applications.)

hi dewbie

i'm not sure if you can set gtk-youtube-viewer to use vlc...

but to set vlc as the default player in wary, look in /usr/local/bin/defaultmediaplayer . open it as text and change the listed madia player to vlc

not sure which is the best vlc out of those 2, as i use lucid and the old vlc 1.0.6 (as it's the only one that sees my freeview usb)

That wasn't really a concern; I just wanted to test it with the downloaded YouTube mp4 files.

I tried vlc-1.1.5-w5.pet both ways:
(pressing the d key)
Deinterlace on (Blend)
Deinterlace off

It was actually worse than MPlayer.
(a slideshow either way)

But remember, processor is only 350MHz.
So overall it has done quite well.
Thanks again. :)

I love this.

Though for some reason when I play a video with mplayer, the window is tiny and even if I make it full screen, the terminal window goes full screen but the video playback remains the same tiny size.

Is this a problem with Slacko?

hi gnuxo

you'll need to install your graphic drivers to get full screen video.

click on slickpet (on the desktop) then the drivers tab, then test. and install what it suggests.

(i've added a note to the first post)

cheers
