Freeze when first booting Lupu 5.2.8 (Solved) |
|
Hi,
after successfully launching slacko 5.3.1 on my old wintel box (1GB RAM, AMD 1 GHz, Geforce 2MX video) I gave lupu a try, as my father has lupu on his machine and needs user support every minute.
Lupu boots from CD, I can see the desktop and move the mouse pointer. The "welcome to lucid 528" box appears, and then the machine will freeze - the mouse pointer can be moved, but no other reactions.
When I launch the xorgwizard from console, I can do all the settings required, tests run through - but the startup screen will freeze as before.
NB.: After 20-30s I can see the letters in the welcome box flicker slightly and see purple shadows besides the puppy face.
If I'm not quick, I cannot get to the terminal by ctrl-alt-backspace.
To mention again: Slacko runs nice, so I guess it's not a hardware defect.
Any hint would be appreciated.
Greetings,
Wolf

sounds like a video driver issue
try using vesa instead of xorg, then go to ppm and check video driver recommendation
else check video driver used in slacko, and see if one is available for the version of lupu you're trying

Just to add to what Aitch said.
Boot with the Lucid Puppy 528 Live CD.
At the boot screen hit F2.
Add the command puppy pfix=nox
This will get you to a prompt.
Type xorgwizard at the prompt.
Select the vesa driver.
set resolution.
run test to see if it works.
finish xorgwizard.
back at prompt.
Type xwin
should see desktop.
If this works, you can look for a better driver by selecting Quickpet on the desktop.
Under drivers tab.
Select Click here to test your graphics card.
Make a save file before installing new driver.
Install the recommended driver.
Very important to follow directions given for install.

Thanks a lot for the support.
I didnt know that the clou is to enter 'xorgwizard' twice…
Right, after that it could be done.
Thank you everybody!

Wolf
