slacko beta 2

#152 Post by cowboy »

I used unetbootin to burn the iso onto a fat partition of a USB. Booted without issue onto this machine, a Dell Latitude laptop. Initial impressions - mouse travel and behavior much improved on touchpad, compared to 5.3.1, wireless bcm4311 broadcom detected and wpa connection made.

EDIT: created heavily encrypted savefile on fat partition on exit. On reboot, savefile found and loaded, and all settings (including wireless) came back on reboot. Found the new savefile dialog interesting. Seems....geekier....not bad, just geekier. For an existing user, it's probably excellent. Fine work, 01micko. And Happy St. Patrick's to you!

Hi 01micko

All running well on my desktop with 3gb ram/3mhz Pentium4 dual core machine.
Working sound at first boot.
Created a savefile with ease and rebooted.
I installed Flash Player(required to stream my radio programs)via 'Getflash Install Flashplayer' from the menu.
Updated 'PPM'from 'Slickpet,More Pets'tab.
Not quite sure why when I choose a graphics driver from 'Slickpet',it suggests to use 'Mesa'when I have an Nvidia card but maybe I missed something?

Couple of other small things:-
Pmusic 2.4.4 doesn't give any track description or album art.
Pwidgets 2.3.6 CPU_bar not working.

Otherwise looking great.Thanks :)

01micko - would you like me to build a x86_64 kernel for Slacko? I'm currently running my distro, which uses Slackware 13.37 binary packages, so it's compatible.

This could be a very nice addition to 5.3 - it allows both the use of >= 4 GB of memory and 64-bit chroot environments, which means it's a good environment to develop a 64-bit 5.4 on :)

Please test the latest Pmusic-2.5.0 and report in the Pmusic thread if it doesn't work. It would be useful to get more flesh on the report than just: do not work...

thank you

Tested the latest version of Pmusic 2.5.0 and get the same results as described above. No track information,no album art and also no lyrics to the songs using a selection of cd's.

JRE

#157 Post by gcmartin »

I had just discovered that when I installed JRE via the PPM last week I did, indeed, encounter an error that I did not report. I apologize and am including it now for review.

This may have already been addressed in the distro, but, when I attempted to install JRE from the PPM, last week, I got this problem missing libs.

Hope this helps

Are you running a Live media system and using save-session to the live media when you reboot to retain your installation?

That is the problem where, I believe, SFS_Load -on-the-fly (and other SFS procedures) break down; namely, not designed to provide survival of the installed subsystem over reboots of Live media. No current sanctioned method for management of SFS files. TaZoC was trying to make some strides to address this before he became stricken with illness.

Right now, correct me if I'm wrong, but, the PPM method is the only way I know of to add system functionality and have it retained over reboots via the methodology which ships with Puppy Linux.

Any help, is appreciated.

I will remove the gconf/orbit pets. I don't know why they are broken, but seems they are. If iron or whatever gets downloaded from PPM, then the slackware versions of gconf/orbit get downloaded automatically from the salix repo, whether or not you have those repos enabled. If you get iron directly then you will have to enable the slackware/salix repos to get gconf/orbit (need to use PPM search box).

I have been using iron exclusively and it's working flawlessly, even with CUPS.

Hi again gcmartin,

I use the Multi-session live-CD/DVD system and unlike you I like to load my sfs files as I need them rather have them available at reboot - though I could probably put them in my StartUp directory.

Personally, I like seaside's SFStray for real quick sfs loads (see screenshot) especiallly where I don't want or need to update JWM fixmenus.

Sorry I don't know enough to help you.

My regards

PS My only other thought is that seaside does have an SFSdirload program which can load all sfs files in a any choice of directory all-at-once.

gcmartin and others interested.

Alien Bob, Slackware developer, has posted Java packages compiled on Slackware. I haven't tested them yet but they should install right in. May need dependencies, YMMV.

sfs_load-1.4

#166 Post by shinobar »

@gcmartn
See my reply on the sfs_load with the Live media.
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... &start=177

@mick and to all
sfs_load-1.4 is out.
It contains the script 'extrasfsfind', which lists up sfs and pet on the live cd and in the folder where the pupsave to be saved, and offers to load.
The extrasfsfind function requires the firstrun and pupsaveconfig, that is, may work on the most recent slacko beta,

NVIDIA & ICEWM PETS DATED 17/03/12

#167 Post by ETP »

01micko

I have just tested the following pets, I hope not prematurely!

Code: Select all

icewm-1.3.7-i686-s|Icewm Configuration Change Icewm Settings
wmswitcher-0.18|WM Switcher Switch windowmanagers
nvidia-295.20-k3.1.10-slacko_4gA-s|Configure NVIDIA X Server Settings
The Nvidia pet works fine but ICEWM is problematic in that only the clock icon is present in the system tray and the toggle buttons in the configuration manager have no effect.
I have inspected the various ICEWM configuration files (comparing them with 531) but cannot see any differences. Something fundamental has changed. It may be permissions or delayedrun as if I recall correctly there was some code that allowed JWM & ICEWM to share network tray icons etc.
Apologies if I have jumped the gun.
Regards ETP

Yep. I'm aware of the icewm issue, I took out the code for it in delayedrun as you suspected, fixed for next.

NFS question

#169 Post by DC »

Hi
NFS question,
Is the nfs enabled / complied whatever in slacko ?

In Puppy 528 I can mount a share with

Code: Select all

mount-FULL -t nfs -o nolock 192.16.16.200:/media /mnt/nas_media
but in slako 5.3.2.5/6/7 I get
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on 192.16.16.200:/media,
missing codepage or helper program, or other error
(for several filesystems (e.g. nfs, cifs) you might
need a /sbin/mount.<type> helper program)
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
dmesg | tail or so
googled and tried lots of different things but no luck
