Dpup Exprimo 5.X.3.4.12 with 3.4.2 kernel.

#1231 Post by Billtoo »

I did a manual frugal install to a flash drive.
Running on an acer laptop.

I installed the 12.8 ati pet from ppm, did aticonfig --initial in the
terminal and rebooted.
Report video said the fglrx driver was installed.
I installed xorghi from ppm and restarted x, then used sfs load on the
fly to install a google earth sfs, google earth wouldn't run.
I installed the kernel source and devx and compiled
amd-driver-installer-8.982-x86.x86_64.run, did aticonfig --initial and
rebooted.
Google earth works now.
On my imac I had installed both the 12.6 pet in ppm and compiled the
amd driver as well, so the 12.6 pet may not work either.

I'm still having a problem with ppm, kdegames won't download,
neverputt downloaded but wouldn't run.

Wireless connection isn't persistent boot to boot on this laptop, I
used the network wizard to set up the connection.

Billtoo. If you launch PPM from console: ppm and then try to download stuff which does not download. For example test that audacious from backports and then use ftp.debian-backports as download choice, do you get any errors in console. Since...it works for me, so I am clueless why it does not work for you...else there is something in your side which blocks the usage of that download address.

script + gui - failed to make them work, though.

I ran Gparted on a 32GB flash drive. It reported the space as "unallocated" with a large negative size. This is the only Puppy I have found that mis-identifies the drive.

I am not quite sure if this is a bit off topic .

But seems very important . Make it viral .

That has turned out to be really useful. Now, I can tell you for sure it works like a charm! And there's also an added bonus there. That thread makes a good educational reading. Thank you again, rcrsn51 for your help, hopefully others will also benefit from it.

On this one the GUI installed without a hitch, but the 'eee.ko module for 5.X.3.4.11' refuses to install. It would be nice to have it included in the 3.6.2 build.

Anikin. Heh. I would need the patched source for eee.ko module.

rcrsn51 is the patched source owner. I could compile it if I get my hands on source. :D

But....3.4.2 will be the main distro still.....3.6.2 version is in experimental stage atm....

Which means a petition campaign should be started: 1) to get the source, 2) have it included in both builds.

It's on my to-do list. But I'm currently working on something else for 5.X.3.4.12. This is the first Puppy I have seen that supports USB-over-IP.

Which means you can have a REALLY SMALL file and print sharing app.

USB-over-IP ... hmmmm.

Could that also be done wirelessly?

There is a project called HSMM-Mesh which uses modified routers to create wireless Internet-like networks (Austin, TX is the hub but there are other local networks in many places).

Also, in Amateur Radio we have access to lots of bands, so there are other frequencies and kinds of equipment that might host that -- depending on bandwidth and latency details.

WDYT?

Well....yes....I noticed that usb ip entry in staging section and I ticked it without really knowing what it does.

I am happy if there is some real usage for it.

I had that problem all along with several USB flash'es. I have an 8Gb that used to be OK but not anymore. And a 16Gb that have never been able to gpart. I can use it for read/write but it's certainly no ext, probably FAT32. Gparted has no problem with my 4Gb flashes.

I've been trying to find a solution but to no avail. I think it's not a Puppy problem but a Gparted problem.

I have installed 01micko's umplayer-0.97-patched-1337-i686.pet on Dpup Exprimo 5.X.3.4.11. No problems with it.

Download from here:
http://www.smokey01.com/01micko/pet_pac ... 7-i686.pet

Indeed you need qt4 for that. Rather voluminous.

I just had to check the word voluminous:
adjective
runsas rich, abundant, large, generous, heavy, voluminous
suuri large, great, big, wide, grand, voluminous
muhkea hefty, voluminous
mahtava awesome, mighty, spectacular, powerful, whopping, voluminous

lol

In Puppy terms:

large, heavy, big, hefty, whopping

would apply.

Makes you think twice if you want to install it...

Hello everybody,

I wonder if anyone can answer my noob enquiry :?:

I'm using Dpup Exprimo 5.X.3.4.10 with 3.4.2 kernel.
Whenever I try to choose from the desktop setup : Bare desktop with no icons, it don't save this setting and next session i find all the icons are still there, same as with the Rox panels i create, they disappear after reboot.

If this is fixed in Dpup Exprimo 5.X.3.4.12 .. please advice me how can upgrade my version without losing the setting i have for now.

Thanx

No Desktop Icon Problem with Exprimo 5x3.4.12

#1249 Post by mikeslr »

Xtanova,

I don't like desktop icons or complex menus. So I remove the former, and added a couple application launchers to JWM's tray, and fbpanel (on the left of attached screenshot, currently unhidden by mouse-over). My settings are persistent over reboots. But I don't recall having a problem with 5x3.4.10 either. Default desktop icons used to appear on reboot if I changed (added or deleted) Sfses, but I think that the recent builds overcame that.
Correct me if I'm wrong: (1) to remove the desktop icons you right-click them and select remove. (2) to Add/change JWM's tray launchers you use JWM Configuration from the menu & click to restart JWM; and (3) that your settings are OK until you reboot.

Aside from removing some/all desktop icons, what other display configurations/settings are you making? It appears that you're using Conky, but what did you use to obtain the icons/launchers on the top panel?

Re: No Desktop Icon Problem with Exprimo 5x3.4.12

#1250 Post by Xtanova »

Thanx mikeslr,

This is my first month as linux user, 2nd week as puppy user, and i admit this is the most helpful community in the linux world 8)

I'm using on the top "wbar" and at the sides of the screen "pwidgets" application that is based on Conky.

My issue is that the some savings are not persistent in Dpup Exprimo 5.X.3.4.10..as you see in the screenshot the option of no desktop icons is already saved from the last session, i don't alter or change any settings.. just save and reboot, next session comes with the icons appearing and the rox panel i have on the top is gone too.

If Dpup Exprimo 5.X.3.4.12 got this fixed I was wondering .. whether i can upgrade my current distro without losing my installed applications and my saved settings ?
