Antivirus web proxy servers - has anyone done it? |
|
I've got some windows users that I need to protect from themselves. I was thinking of putting together a web proxy server more for checking virus and spyware than for serving web pages. I suppose I could replace my router with it too. Has anyone done anything like that?
I found this story:
http://www.kernel-panic.it/openbsd/proxy/index.html
Looks difficult. I also found this:
http://www.server-side.de/features.htm
I suppose openbsd would be the best OS for this, but I'll try anything. One thing I wonder about is the reputation of clamav for catching viruses - it's not very good that I can tell.

Not real familiar with ClamAV. Are these users unwilling/unable to run, say, Avast! Free antivirus on their own systems?
I recommend that one, because (a) it's the one I use, having gotten there from AVG (which let me down) and Norton (which really let me down big time) upon recommendation from my local tech shop. When they talk, I take notes -- and I quickly remember that I'm about ten steps down from them in nerditude.
(1st year in college I was running Norton, when I got the virus that came in a Java Update... anyone remember that? Well, AVG kicked its butt, and about a year ago got its own butt-kicking -- at which point I finally listened to my friends at the tech shop, and now I'm running Avast! Free -- and it's great stuff!)
Full disclosure: I probably should have "resident hypocrite" under my handle (nickname, nym, whatever) here, since my main OS is *still* WinXP... guess I haven't gotten a big enough virus to make me go over to Puppy yet.
