Hi NickBiker,

Your wizard got my webcam to work! Fantastic!

I have a Creative Labs webcam.

At first, I got the same problem as Lobster.

I noticed that I didn't have the /usb/media folders, so I applied the BFI Method (Brute Force and Ignorance), created those folders, then tried your wizard again.

This time, it went all the way to the end and finally saw my smiling face on my monitor.

Thanks!

===========
following Indys advice - got me much further
in fact right through the wizard
BUT the xawtv prog did not work
here are some outputs

Will uninstall and try again later perhaps
Hope others give it a go - once refined this Wiz Wiz needs to be in Puppy
Great piece of work so far
Glad to hear of people having success :)

Hi!
Great news!!

Yes, a silly error in the wizard checks to see if you can write to the directory, but forgets to check it exisits first! Fixing that and will issue a new wizard!!

Glad it is working. I am looking a doing more webcam apps - like gnome meeting - have you seen any you like/use?

Hi

I have updated the Wizard to do a bit more analysis of the debug output from the driver. You might like to re-download and run?

Sadly, I think that the SENSOR inside your webcam is not supported by this driver. Although the camera identifies as the correct type, they are made with a range of different sensors. The drivers, written by volunteers, decode some, but not all, of these devices. The problem has been that manufacturers claim that the information is "secret" and will not release teh tech. specs, making it a tough job to write the Linux code to support them. I suspect that Microsoft has no such problem...

Anyway, keep going!!

p.s. no the 3d driver will not be affecting the results.
Nick

Hi

Right I have now produced Wizard 1.02!

Give this a go. It now allows for more than one driver and will automatically download each and try them. Fingers crossed!!

m m m let me see if I can find another webcam - oh I tried that still looking
Hi Lobster!!

Sorry about that - don't give up!! We'll get there - the fish are on your side!!

Try version 1.04 of my Wizard. I think the last try highlighted some problems in the wizard - I feel more confident that this version will work and the alternative driver really should give you some results. Fingers crossed (or claws!)

Good to hear about the fish :)
Here is the latest output
I also found my other 'webcam'
It is not really a webcam but a tiny digital camera
that can be used as a webcam - a Umax 320S
Do you want me to run that through the wizard too?

Hey we need more testers.
All you do is download the latest wizard from Nickbikers website (see first post in this thread)
then you plug in your webcam and click on the downloaded file
and just follow the instruction (a few mouse clicks)
A text file is created in "my documents" which you can send or post here.

Are you sure those fish are on my side?
They might end up - Eaten! :)

Here is the latest output
I also found my other 'webcam'
It is not really a webcam but a tiny digital camera
that can be used as a webcam - a Umax 320S
Do you want me to run that through the wizard too?
Yes - give it a go my Homarus gammarus friend!
Lobster wrote:Hey we need more testers.
I have had a few people email to say they have got their cams to work using the Wizard - good news!

Lobster - I think it is now working it was just the wizard that got the analysis wrong! Try the lastest again (1.05) - nearly there!! Difficult when I don't have the cam this end - but I feel the tide is with us!!

Suggestion: Download the Pup file again
tried 3 downloads - got the same above message
The fish did it!
The other cam did not work - will try it again with 1.05 when I can download :)

Oh for goodness!! All I do is ftp the package to the web site and now this!! I have copied it again and checked and all working. You have to wonder somedays - doesn't the ftp ensure integrity of the file?

It should be ok now!

As for the other cam, a quick check reveals that you have choosen another cam that is "difficult" undex Linux. The Wizard won't find it - but at least you can let me have the output and I can start my jouney on that one too...

the other webcam/camera is a Umax AstraPix 320S

the other webcam/camera is a Umax AstraPix 320S
and it does not seem to be registering as plugged in even.
We got this camera working with digicam (it could not be acessed from MUT)
Hi

Try plugging it into USB and doing

cat /proc/bus/usb/devices

Sadly if the basic USB controller does not register the device as exisiting, then we can't move forward!

 Have you tried it in different USB ports?
Nick
