rebooted and all is well.

This is my first time, do I just download then update it form the Universal installer?
Your best bet is a virgin Puppy
download ISO
go to menu/multimedia/(burn)/burniso2CD
boot
when boot: appears type in a p (you have 5 seconds)
complete typing puppy pfix=ram

You are now a tester
We are the Dorg
Resistance is futile

b43 firmware

#309 Post by mavrothal »

Tried 5.3.2.1 on my iMac.
Original b43 firmware: "TOO NEW"
5.10.65: Did not work because of errors in ucode16_mimo.fw :?
But version 5.10.143.3 worked!
Posting from it :D
The pet is attached

Now I have to check why installing a pet messes up snapmerge, fails to exit to prompt, restart Xserver or shutdown with no relevant errors I could find :? ...

Next thing will be to test LibreOffice from Get LibreOffice menu entry. I suppose it is in Slacko, cause it is great 01micko`s script app. I have just remade my LibreOffice Rox-right-click pet, so that it should support 01micko`s sfs application paths. Okay....menu entries might change a little. I havent tested this in Slacko, since I am using now dpup Exprimo 3.1.10 experimental build. But somebody might find this pet useful.

Here is how it goes.
Boot with a save file, do something, snapmergepuppy (terminal or desktop icon) works fine.
Install a pet from terminal (to see any messages) with "petget somepet.pet" after the GUI confirmation petget never exits though the files are copied into the file system.
Run snapmergepuppy after that, it hangs.
Killall petget, installpkg.sh, snapmergepuppy etc, run snapmergepuppy, still hangs. :? :? :?
Autosaving at time interval also fails after that

Then tried to see if running directly installpkg.sh on the pet gives any info. Just hangs :?

None of these are happening when I run slacko in a VM on my Mac, but when I boot the iMac directly from the CD with a savefile in a (n ext3) USB stick
Anybody has seen this in a similar boot setting (Mac or no-Mac)?

One thing I noticed is that slacko has aufs-utils 2.1 !!!
This is unsupported long time now and not recommended by the developer for 3.x kernels and indeed gives me troubles in the above setting (independent of the pet issue).
I do not know if this may relate to the pet installation issue, but you may want to compile a newer one or use one pet that I made for the 3.1.4 XO kernel.
(BK in not using Aufs anymore so I do not know if/when the aufs-util pet will be updated)

PS: Just in case, here is my iMac's system info.

Yep.. xcompmgr, jwm issue, but the improvements in jwm outweigh that bug, I informed Joe a few weeks ago. I will direct him to your post because he reckons it was a driver issue but I get it on radeon, nvidia and intel. Definitely jwm.

I can confirm the bug where you boot from CD and save to usb, petget hangs. Exactly what you describe happens on wifey's macbook, it's not the kernel as there are no kernel messages, woof bug. We'll see if it happens with the upcoming racy using unionfs eh?

It does not occur in a normal usb install. I tried on my eee-701SD, my IBM r51 Thinkpad and my xo-1.5, all ok installing a few pets after the save was made.

I know Jasper has tried the boot CD/save to usb method.. Jasper? Can you confirm? (mav and myself have only tried macs, could be a mac quirk)

BTW, update of aufs-util is written on the TODO list

Used aufs-util3. Still hangs.
I think there are some recent changes on snapmerge/PPM. Which woof did you use for 5.3.2.1?

Hmmm, 5.3.2.1 does not have this commit. Though I do not think is the problem

Dpup Exprimo, jwm-579, 3.1.10 kernel produces those ghost shadows with xcompmgr also. Kcompmgr somehow suffers less of that ghost shadows.
I have 2Pfx Gui pet with both composite managers.

Everything seems to be running ok in 5.3.2.1
I lost the speaker icon on the first attempt after boot.On the second attempt it seems to have stayed put so far.

Hi 01micko,

THE 5.3.2.1 NEWS IS GOOD from the very quick "pfix=ram" test that is all I have time for immediately, in that the two problems I had with the last version are fixed:

(1) Internet connection was A1.

(2) The portable version of Opera by stu90 again loads (and now also unloads without a spurious error message though unimportantly Opera's red tray icon was still in a small white box).

My regards and thanks

Addendum

I have now tried to execute your request re "Jasper has tried the boot CD/save to usb method" and I hope I have understood you properly.

Using the still pristine CD referred to above I booted to my sdc1 flash drive and updated from 5.3.1 to 5.3.2.1, then I renamed the sdc1 file from "puppy_slacko_5.3.1.sfs" to "zzzpuppy_slacko_5.3.1.sfs".

Then, before installing shinobar's petget-20120108.pet I installed Iron browser then rebooted and reloaded installing another pet every time.

Then I installed "petget-20120108.pet" and similarly installed and saved more pets three times.

I used the save icon once for both trials and then used my Tower RESET button and otherwise used the normal reboot twice each.

Throughout, I got no unexpected error messages and all the pets worked well.
