Slacko 5.3.3-RC2 (5.3.2.4[0])
Since aufs and kernel 3.X with usb pet installation has been problematic from the beginning...I have used Shinobar`s petget package. Shinobar has addressed those problems. Barry K changed to use unionfs for that reason, or that was one of the reasons. Now I have petget-20120108.pet which has been updated so that it is uptodate with recent woof commits.
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 364#494364
I did live cd booting and created the savefile to usb stick with my parallel Exprimo build. Booting up again with that savefile in use, the pet installations works as they should. Nothing hanging and PPM updates.
PPM shows dependencies and PPM package download and installation works. PPM also updates the installed package information ok.
It might cause embarrassment that I provide parallel information on this thread. If my observations are disturbing, please....just tell so...and I stop.

Have not enough linux knowledges, I am novice puppy listener.. you've hear-me
Tried the "nouveau_unload experiment" from console command xorgwizard, and it worked!!... at last the lovely menus and slacko is running for me. Windows move jerky, now I think a good nvidia driver pet is needed.
move today to test (5.3.2.1) same problem with nouveau

I can confirm that shinobar's petget-20120108.pet (after "manual" installation) solves the problem in Slacko 5.3.2.1pemasu wrote:Since aufs and kernel 3.X with usb pet installation has been problematic from the beginning...I have used Shinobar`s petget package. Does bring up an issue though. How woof is developed and how pupplet developers can upstream their fixes/patches...

Mavrothal. If you check woof2 timeline, you can see that there are references by whom the Barry`s fixes have been updated. There are numerous ppl who have been mentioned there. Mavrothal has been mentioned there also
http://bkhome.org/fossil/woof2.cgi/timeline
I believe you have to anonymous login before you see the references or then not. I always login before I start to check the commits.
About aufs. I think that since Barry has chosen unionfs for 3.X...we are the outlaws now
I tried unionfs with 3.1.0 kernel and I didnt like the outcome. I choosed aufs instead.

Yep.. xcompmgr, jwm issue, but the improvements in jwm outweigh that bug, I informed Joe a few weeks ago. I will direct him to your post because he reckons it was a driver issue but I get it on radeon, nvidia and intel. Definitely jwm.

Yes. They are all generated from the Linux wireless (scroll down a bit) firmwares with the appropriate b43-fwcutter.pemasu wrote:Does that broadcom_firmware-5.10.143.3.pet cover other usual b43 chips also. There seems to be 54 firmwares included.
Also have 4.174.64.19 though is too old I believe

Slacko-3.3.2.10
Hi Mick,
Manual frugal installation of PAE version on an ext4 partition on my Dell Laptop is working great. Fast, stable, and everything just works including a wifi connection to a HP Officejet. None of the problems that appeared in last 2 apha's. Thank you for providing a PAE version.
I hope that you are still planning on using shinobar's latest stable version pupsaveconfig-2.0.1.pet which works fine.
Will checkout desktop and post results later.
Cheers,
Jim

Indeed shinobar's petget update solves most of the problems but it creates one. You can't install nvidia drivers, it's weird, but here's the error message:
Why does tar try and open a whiteout? Why is it trying to open anything in that directory?

I don't recall much mention of full installs so....... test full install of 5.3.2.1 on yet another old P3. Started with a empty Dbanned hdd.
Gparted to make Ext3 partition and swap.....no problem. Puppy installer..... no problem. Good old reliable Legacy Grub...... no problem. No editing of menu.lst necessary, booting from default.

Sorry about that link to the older version of petget. The one jim3630 posted about is the on which has those latest fixes:

All of my problems installing Nvidia drivers have been associated with nouveau. I will be trying my desktop later which has Nvidia and report back. However, I have not tried shinobar's petget update, also, I still need to test your "nouveau_unload". Laptop is using mesa GLX driver installed with Slickpet.01micko wrote:Indeed shinobar's petget update solves most of the problems but it creates one. Three cheers for micko and nouveau_unload!
Slacko 5.3.2.1 boots to a desktop without menus, but nouveau_unload gets rid of the offending driver, guides the user through the save-file setup and reboots with vesa.
You can then load the proprietary nvidia driver via slickpet | Drivers and (after running through the xorgwizard installation routine) the results are quite spectacular. With the nvidia GeForce FX5200 and the recommended 173.14.31 driver, I got ca. 3000 fps.
I couldn't measure the rate with vesa, but measurements with previous versions were around 140 fps.
Everything else worked - automatic ethernet connection, sound, cups printing easily set up. CPU usage minimal as compared to the 3.2... kernel in Alpha 5, I have been running for hours now without the slightest sign of CPU fatigue.
Nvidia (unlike certain other manufacturers I could name) provides continuing support for older products - something we should really encourage. Solving this problem (resolving this issue) is simply a question of installing a useable driver at first boot-up so we don't scare new users off the deck of our new flagship before they have had a chance to look around.
But, this is what betas are for. I suspect that this might be more complicated than it seems.
In any case, micko, good luck on your studies and on to RC1.
