vividpup beta

#1 Post by 666philb »

This is vividpup built with woof CE and using ubuntu 14.10 vivid vervet packages.

Kernel 3.19.5_PAE (built using stemsees sukk-1.7)
jwm & rox, palemoon, thunderbird, libreoffice, gimp, deadbeef, avidemux, simplescreenrecorder, coquillo, smilla enlarger, tixati, vlc, QT, python, pidgin, sticky Jwm, packit, uextract, p7zip, pupsysinfo, pupclockset, urxvtcontrol, find'n'run, flash
plus the usual suspects.

wallpaper by futwerk

left ctrl & F5 for screenshot

issues .... i've had jwm crash a few times, it's the one from tahrpup, so might need to re-compile it for vivid. (or it could just be my comp)

A modern multi-core PC with more than 2gb of ram is recommended
It's a big one! 432mb.

to update palemoon you'll need the attached .pet

test vividpup beta

Hi.. just to let you know i have a common problem with the 6 series,
As i am using an USA key board, i did not change it when setting up, only changed the time to London. when i use palemoon to go to my e-mail address many letters do not work on the keyboard.. so i went to setup again and selected keyboard set up, scrolled down to near the bottom of the list,
selected USA. and this works fine.???????? so far the mouse and printer work fine, as do the WIFI and eth0.

Quick frugal install. All basics working ootb. Sound was muted on boot but merely changing the level took care of that.

Tried two Chromium sfs's (which work fine in other "modern" pups), launched but not usable.More checking on that later.

Merely for informational purposes, the screenie illustrates the results...Chromium launches but any attempt to load a web page or access settings ends up as in the screenshot.

Luckily,no problems with Pale Moon or Dillo.

LxPup components are working well on top of vividpup.

I will try to compile the wl driver for the 3.18.8 kernel - later- first attempt failed - need to look for any patches relevant.

Noticed 1 problem with Frisbee-1.3.1 - a connection is established but the tray icon and message do not get updated - I'll report this in the Frisbee thread.

Chromium problem seems to be something to do with the numbers of files open.

Cheers and congrats

I never really liked Frisbee. It has a lot of bugs.

When I use it, I feel like the developer purposely broke it to screw with me for ****s and giggles.

Puppy distro and version both are irrelevant here.

i think the chrome issue is kernel related .... switching in one of tahrpups kernels fixed the issue http://ftp.nluug.nl/ftp/pub/os/Linux/di ... r/kernels/

the issue with taskbar apps segfaulting after restarting the WM seems to be nearly fixed in the build i'm doing at the moment, xchat icon still disappears but the program carries on running.

This is quite nice OOTB. - Thanks.

One edit - I noted that when restarting X-Server, some of the mounted desktop icons disappear (the usb's and external drives). This happens in other new distro's as well, such as Barry's Unicorn, Tahr, etc. Also, the default terminal runs painfully slow. I installed Roxterm and it's quite significantly faster.

futwork: very nice thanks.. they'll be in the next vividpup. I was actually building the new one last night and was on the final run through when the computer went bang! PSU i think, but it may be a while until i get a new one and can finish the build.

slavvo67: the taskbar icons are fixed in the latest one (see post above may be some time) and urxvt should be better as i compiled it in vivid, previous tahr version wanted a different perl, so the errors were probably slowing it.

the next vivid is a biggy 400mb ....

libreoffice
gimp
avidemx
qt
python
vlc
simple screen recorder

just waiting on a PSU :)

666Philb:

Sorry to hear about your PSU. Would you happen to have a script or a pet for that icon issue in the meantime? It may come in handy on other puppy projects, as well.

Thanks and thanks for another strong puppy!

hi slavvo67,

the problem remedied itself in the newer build. ubuntu would have updated a load of libs. i had s similar problem with early unicornpups. initially gtkdialog didn't work with it and then at one point this problem was fixed due to newer libs & apps

It's concerning to me because when restarting X, I typically have a mounted USB that will then not appear as a mounted icon on the desktop. I can certainly see it as mounted in Roxfiler but forgetting it's mounted may cause me to remove a usb without unmounting first.

Thank you, as always for your help and your find distros.

network_tray does not work in vividpup (or unicornpup).

A patch and fix is available from:
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 479#837479

#666philb - can the amended source be uploaded to ibiblio please?

rerwin has also detected that the source contains deprecated gtk_ calls so a 2.9.2 version may appear once changes have been identified and tested.

Thanks

Peebee,

Great find and fix! Thank you! Philb mentioned he has a newer version of Vivid that fixes the issue but as you notice, he hasn't been around for a few days. He was having computer issues.

Best,

Slavvo67
