Subject description: Lucid Puppy 528 frugal

Hi
Excuse me if I don't speak English very well !!!
I've a problem with my netbook Asus Eee PC 701SD.
I've the French version "toutou linux" 431 on the HDD and it works fine. I had to add the dhpcd529puppy5.pet for the wi fi. Now it's alright.
But I want to have Lucid puppy 525 or 538 on a USB key (frugal). Everything works quite well except the wi fi. It's exactly the same problem I had with the "toutou linux" 431.
So, I need a wi fi driver, but I don't know where to download the .pet, and which one I need....
Can yo help me ?
Thank you

Try running, in a console:

Code:
modprobe r8187se
depmod -a

Then run Menu>Setup>Internet Connect wizard>Internet by wired/wireless LAN>Network Wizard, and see if it picks up your device.

If not, others have reported success with the rtl8180 drive. To try do:

Code:
modprobe -r r8187se
modprobe rtl8180
depmod -a

Then try Network Wizard again.

Good morning,
Thank you for your quick answer.
What I have on the wizard :
interface type driver bus description
eth1 wired atheros_eth x x
wlan1 wireless r8180 x x

I clic on the wlan1.
message : "Please wait, scanning for wireless network", and then nothing.

on the console
#modprobe r8187se
#depmod -a
I go back to the wizard.
I still see on, that window "simple Network setup", the driver r8180........ I clic on the wlan1, and..... it does the same thing.

Any idea ?
Thank you

To try r8187se, first unload rtl8180. Try:

Code:
modprobe -r rtl8180
modprobe r8187se
depmod -a

Thank you muggins
In the console I write :
# modprobe -r rtl 8180
#modprobe r8187se
#depmod -a
#
In the wizard, I still see :
wlan1 Wireless r8180 x x
I clic on wlan1, and I have still "please wait scanning for wireless networks

I have tried again, rebooting, but I still see in the wizard
wlan1 Wireless r8180 x x
I don't know what to do......
any idea ?
Thank you

Hi
I had exactly the same problem with puppy linux 431.
I dowloaded the rtl8187se-k2.6.30.5.pet, install it, and immedialy everything works fine.
On puppy linux 431, I have eth0 y wlan0

Well, I tried with lucid puppy 528 to dowload and install the same rtl8187se-k2.6.305.pet, but it does nothing, and I have still eth1 y wlan1 with the wireless driver r8180.

I don't know what to do.........

Do you have any idea ?

Thank you

PostPosted: Mon 09 Jan 2012, 13:29    Post subject: When I was Beta Testing MacPup 528
Subject description: Pendrive install.

My email to runtt21 when I was Beta Testing Macpup 528 before it came out

Booted up on my EEEPC 701SD. I tried puppy pfix=ram option on boot to not load
the eeepc900 save file. I kept getting a boot error of can't find MacPup save
file doing this. Then dropped to a # prompt shell. So I booted up once normal like to let it load the eeepc 900
save file and it loaded to desktop. Frisbee network manager showed wlan1 instead
of wlan0 for connection for wireless. I shutdown without doing anything else
and let it run through save. Rebooted again with puppy pfix=ram, just gave the same error
I mentioned up above.

So. I booted up my internal SSD drive with AntiX and opened pcmanfm as root and]
opened pendrive and deleted eeepc900 save fie. Rebooted pendrive normally and booted
up OK. I don't know why puppy pfix=ram did not work for me.

This test I am just installng xorg_high driver. My inxi and xrandr readout is before
the xorg_high driver install. glxgears is after install. I made a eeepc701SD
save file ext2 on pendrive. I guess I should also mention the eeepc900 save file
was also ext2 file system. Both saves=512MB

I installed cheese on the eeepc 900 to test webcam from puppy package manager.
Camera worked OK and took snapshots. No record function though for movie from
webcam (button was x'ed out). Not a macpup thing anyways. Just mentioning for webcam.

On the 701SD
Tap works.
Sound works.
Mic works in mhwavedit after setting up alsamixer like I did on the 900.

I installed Frisbee 2 beta on the 900 via puppy package manager. Worked ok
connecting. It would drop connection though when would be doing some
other application on the netbook. Same drops with dougal wireless connection
manager also. Sees to be a Puppy Thing with these EEEPCs.

Simple Network Manager on this 701SD fails to connect. I used Dougals instead
which works OK. Just glad the module loads/in the kernel for Realtek RTL8187SE chip on this
eeepc 701SD. Short test. I'm beat/tired runt21. Hope these tests help you.
Let me know if you need any other info.

Good evening again,
It works !!!!!
It can help others persons who have the same problem, to know how to do a very simple way for solving the problem.
I've downloded this file : kernel_src_L4-2.6.33.2-patched.sfs
I've simply done a clic on the file downloaded, and then a clic on conect, and there I had the normal window on which I had to clic on wlan1. Then, finaly, I had all the wi fi network aroud there listed. I've just select mine, enter the key, and, everything is allright !!!

Thank you again for your help and I'm glad to help to others this way

Friendly yours

RTL8187SE confirmed, there were different chipsets

tempestuous provided a driver and instructions here

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?p=237747#237747

2.6.25.16 kernel, I do not know if this works with later kernels, ask tempestuous

check the output of typing
Code:
dmesg
in console for errors

before/after applying driver changes

@Aitch, no, the drivers are all kernel specific.

@gilloraymondo, it's OK, we were just seeing if the driver would work OK for you. To load it when you reboot, run:

Menu>System>BootManager>Click here to add new module

then arrow down the list and highlight r8187se, then click Add, then OK, reboot, then check the Network Wizard again.
