Project64 on Lucid Puppy 5.2.8? (Solved)

#1 Post by dablueman22 »

Hi, I have Wine installed on my Lucid Puppy 5.2.8 which is on my flash drive.
These are the specs:
http://reviews.cnet.com/laptops/lenovo- ... l;lwrspecs

I have Windows 7 Starter N installed instead of Windows XP (I didn't upgrade it, the previous owner did) and i downloaded drivers for the graphics card and everything worked except my good games, Halo and Project 64. They both get Blue Screen of Deaths.

Halo I know wouldn't work on Puppy, because each time I try to copy it to /root, the RAM gets too full.
So I try running Project64 on it Wine, and it makes me select graphics, and then tells me I need DirectX compatibility. Same exact message that I got before I got drivers on Windows 7.

This laptop probably doesn't have drivers for Puppy Linux, since it's from back in 2005 or something, so is there any way to get it working?

Thanks in advance.

Hi,
Use Wine Tricks to download Directx, install your program to Wine with your cd and you should be good to go. If you have other questions about installing and using Wine in Puppy go to this link and search: http://wellminded.com/puppy/pupsearch.html

Thanks, I didn't even expect a reply because I didn't really word that out well.
But somehow, you got what I meant :)

Anyway, Project64 is not usually installed from a CD- I downloaded it from their official website onto my flash drive, which I now have Puppy installed on also. So I am trying to run the .exe from my flash drive (Which normally works in Windows), and it is then that it tells me to get DirectX compatibility. Project64 an emulator of the Nintendo 64 video game console.

The website you gave me is very helpful for all of the problems I get with Puppy, and I'll let you guys know if I find something or not.

Well so far, I don't see how to use Wine Tricks, because I don't understand the program. The only words I recognize in it are "7zip" and "Cancel" (Though I don't know what the 7 in "7zip" means). I think I'm supposed to download DirectX from somewhere and install it using Wine Tricks, but I have no idea where. Can you help start me off on this with some sort of step-by-step so that I know what I'm doing?

OK I ended up not using Tricks, but instead used a .pet that I bumped into (Sorry I can't find it anymore but it was in there, it required Python and said it was for Radeon and something else. I have a Radeon) and PJ64 doesn't seem to have a problem loading up the ROM anymore with either graphics plugin, but then it came up with one of those "has a problem and needs to close" Windows dialogs, and closes my game before I could play it at all.

It also started saying that my AUDIO plugin isn't compatible anymore, but I don't need sound to play the game (though it would be nice).

The thing is, last time I had Puppy (v5.2.5) I ran PJ64 just fine, I couldn't do full-screen but that didn't matter. It was the exact same flash drive and the exact same copy of PJ64. However, it was a HP Laptop, and my current one is an older IBM Thinkpad (Before the Lenovo Thinkpads). So, I think that the problem isn't Wine because somehow it seems to have Directx3D, but it's either the drivers or the laptop not being able to play it. If anyone could get me the drivers for the specs that I posted in the beginning of this, that would be awesome.

I also think that the "needs to close" dialogue was Wine's Blue Screen of Death, since Wine isn't able to do that, but when I did it on Windows 7 that's what happened...

Hi, It's been quite a while since I installed Wine and a couple of Window's games so I won't try to give you a specific step by step solution. Best way for you to find out what you need to do for your specific situation is to use well minded search and take a look at these links: http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... f5f332fe3a

I hope tis helps and GL.

Ok thanks for your help, the problem apparently is just my hardware itself now (I don't know about the sound, but that's useless without the graphics), because well this IBM Thinkpad is from about 2005, so it's capabilities are limited. It's the reason I can't use the Aero theme in Windows 7, either, so I guess I'll wait for a new computer. Thanks anyway, though.
